Development of barium@alginate adsorbents for sulfate removal in lithium refining

The demand for lithium has been steadily growing in recent years due to the boom of electric *** purity lithium is commonly used in the manufacture of battery grade lithium *** residuals originating from acid leaching of lithium ores must be limited to below 20 mg·L^(−1) during *** are methods to remove sulfate such as membrane processing and chemical precipitation using barium ***,membrane separation is unable to achieve the required purity while chemical precipitation often causes secondary contamination with barium and requires extra filtration processes that lead to increased processing *** this study,we developed a polymeric matrix entrapped with barium ions as a novel adsorbent to selectively adsorb sulfate in aqueous *** adsorbent was prepared by dropwise injection method where alginate droplets were crosslinked with barium to form hydrogel *** a typical scenario,the microcapsules had a diameter of 3 mm and contained 5 wt-%*** microcapsules could successfully reduce sulfate concentration in a solution from 100 to 16 mg·L^(−1),exceeding the removal ***,the microcapsules were mechanically unstable in the presence of an excess amount of ***,calcium ions were added as a secondary crosslinking agent to improve the integrity of the *** two-step Ca/ba@alginate microcapsules showed an exceptional adsorption performance,reducing the sulfate concentration to as low as 0.02 mg·L^(−1).Since the sulfate selective microcapsules can be easily removed from the aqueous system and do not result in secondary barium contamination,these Ca/ba@alginate adsorbents will find applications in ultra-refining of lithium in industry.

On-line partial discharge(PD)monitoring is being increasingly adopted to improve the asset management and maintenance of medium-voltage(MV)*** study presents a novel method for autonomous analysis and classification of motor PD patterns in situations where a phase-reference voltage waveform is not *** main contributions include a polar PD(PPD)pattern and a fractal theory-based autonomous PD recognition *** pattern that is applied to convert the traditional phase-resolved PD pattern into a circular form addresses the lack of phase information in on-line PD monitoring *** fractal theory is then presented in detail to address the task of discrimination of 6 kinds of single source and 15 kinds of multi-source PD patterns related to motors,as outlined in IEC *** classification of known and unknown defects is calculated by a method known as centre *** of the proposed method is demonstrated using data from laboratory experiments on three typical PD *** study also discusses the application of the proposed techniques with 24 sets of on-site PD measurement data from 4 motors in 2 nuclear power *** results show that the proposed method performs effectively in recognising not only the single-source PD but also multi-source PDs.

Assessing Spatial Patterns of Plant Communities at Varying Stages of Succession

There is a well known connection between the structural complexity of vegetative stands and ecosystem properties. Developing methods to quantify this structural complexity is an important goal for ecologists. We present an efficient and easily implemented field technique for calculating the shape of forest canopies, and the shape of forest stands as succession occurs, using fractal geometry. Fractal geometry can be used to describe complex, non-Euclidean objects that are common in natural systems. We tested the use of this tool in 22 vegetative and forested plots in Western New York State, USA. We found an asymptotic relationship for fractal dimension (D) as a function of basal area (ba;r2= 0.68). In a randomization test to investigate the robustness of D to different tree canopy shapes, we found that D was sensitive to canopy shape switching, suggesting that the method is able to differentiate among similar forests comprised of species having different shaped crowns. We conclude that the shape is conserved in vegetative areas as they progress from one stage of succession to the next (range of mean D: 2.56 to 2.68 across stages). Furthermore, we conclude that the shape filling properties—i.e., distribution of trunks and limbs in a forested area, measured as mean distance—are also conserved across vegetational chronosequences (F = 1.3189, df = 8, 3, p = 0.3341).

In this paper we discussed the development of a morphing wingtip device or winglet for *** aim of this research is enhancing the aerodynamic of aircrafts,by optimizing the winglet shape,angle and torsion,to reduce wingtip vortices at each flight stage,reduce drag,fuel consumption and increase its *** development of a working physical wingtip device with morphing functionality,is possible by using piezoelectric MFCs(Macro Fiber Composites)as actuators in wing *** to their excellent properties like flexibility,light weight,tolerant to damage and long term stability MFC fit most of the requirements and specifications of morphing ***,they are based on the toxic compound of PbZrxTi1-xO3(PZT).Lead-free materials can replace lead based ***,other aim of this inquiry is the development of piezoelectric lead-free compounds based on the solid solution ba1-xCaxTi0.9Zr0.1O3(BCZT)with x=0.1,0.125,*** reason for choosing these compositions is because BZCT compounds could reach a piezoelectricity coefficient d33~400 pC/*** value is comparable with commercial PZT,therefore it is a great candidate to replace it.

Stroke is the leading cause of death and ***,there is no effective pharmacological treatment for this disease,which can be partially attributed to the inability to efficiently deliver therapeutics to the *** we report the development of natural compound-derived nanoparticles(NPs),which function both as a potent therapeutic agent for stroke treatment and as an efficient carrier for drug delivery to the ischemic ***,we screened a collection of natural nanomaterials and identified betulinic acid(ba)as one of the most potent antioxidants for stroke ***,we engineered ba NPs for preferential drug release in acidic ischemic tissue through chemically converting ba to betulinic amine(baM)and for targeted drug delivery through surface conjugation of AMD3100,a CXCR4 *** resulting AMD3100-conjugated baM NPs,or A-baM NPs,were then assessed as a therapeutic agent for stroke treatment and as a carrier for delivery of NA1,a neuroprotective *** show that intravenous administration of A-baM NPs effectively improved recovery from stroke and its efficacy was further enhanced when NA1 was *** to their multifunctionality and significant efficacy,we anticipate that A-baM NPs have the potential to be translated both as a therapeutic agent and as a drug carrier to improve the treatment of stroke.
