Intestinal endometriosis:Diagnostic ambiguities and surgical outcomes

BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a common disease for women of reproductive age. However,when it involves intestines, it is difficult to diagnose preoperatively because its symptoms overlap with other diseases and the results of evaluations can be unspecific. Thus it is important to know the clinical characteristics of intestinal endometriosis and how to exactly *** To analyze patients in whom intestinal endometriosis was diagnosed after surgical treatments, and to evaluate the clinical characteristics of preoperatively misdiagnosed *** We retrospectively reviewed the pathologic reports of 30 patients diagnosed as having intestinal endometriosis based on surgical specimens between January2000 and December 2017. We reviewed their clinical characteristics and surgical *** Twenty-three(76.6%) patients showed symptoms associated with endometriosis,with dysmenorrhea being the most common(n = 9, 30.0%). Thirteen patients(43.3%) had a history of pelvic surgeries. Ten patients(33.3%) had a history of treatment for endometriosis. Only 4 patients(13.3%) had a diagnosis of endometriosis based on endoscopic biopsy findings. According to preoperative evaluations, 13 patients(43.3%) had an initial diagnosis of pelvic endometriosis and 17 patients(56.6%) were misdiagnosed as having other diseases. The most common misdiagnosis was submucosal tumor in the large intestine(n = 8, 26.7%),followed by malignancies of the colon/rectum(n = 3, 10.0%) and ovary(n = 3,10.0%). According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, 5 complications were grade I or II and 2 complications were grade IIIa. SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-spheres for a Li-ion battery anode with extraordinary performance

SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-spheres have been prepared using the template-based sol-gel coating technique and their electrochemical performance as an anode for lithium-ion battery （LIB） was investigated. The size of synthesized hollow spheres was about 50 nm with the shell thickness of 7-8 nm. The fabricated SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-sphere electrode exhibited an extraordinary reversible capacity （962 mAh-g-1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA-g-1）, good cyclability, and high rate capability, which was attributed to the Co-enhanced reversibility of the Li20 reduction reaction during cycling.

Advances in metal-organic frameworks （lVIOFs） resulted in significant contributions to diverse applications such as carbon capture, gas storage, heat transformation and separation along with emerging applications toward catalysis, medical imaging, drug deliver~ and sensing. The unique in situ and ex situ structural features of MOFs can be tailored by conceptual selection of the organic （e.g., ligand） and inorganic （e.g., metal） components. Here, we provide a comprehensive review on the synthesis and characterization of MOFs, particularly with respect to controlling their size and morphology. A better understanding of the specific size and morphological parameters of MOFs will help initiate a new era for their real-world applications. Most importantly, this assessment will help develop novel synthesis methods for MOFs and their hybrid/porous materials counterparts with considerably improved properties in targeted applications.

Short-term and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic vs open ileocolic resection in patients with Crohn's disease: Propensityscore matching analysis

Current Usage of Terminologies Related to Acupotomy: A Literature Research and Standardization Suggestion

Objective: To investigate the current usage of terminologies related to acupotomy through systematic search and analyze the pros and cons of each for proposing a standard terminology. Methods: Seven medical journal databases were searched including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, KoreaMed, and Korean studies Information Service System using 10 candidate terminologies as searching terms. All studies published from their inception to July 26, 2017 were collected. Articles were included if the title stated one of the 10 candidate terminologies consistent with the definition of acupotomy. Priorly established frequency and consistency of each candidate terminology from medical databases were calculated and evaluated. Moreover, the pros and cons of each were analyzed to propose a standard terminology. Results: A total of 112 studies in English databases, 1,129 studies in Chinese database, and 44 studies in Korean databases were included. The most frequently used terminologies were needle knife(35.71%), acupotomy(48.54%) and acupotomy(90.90%) in English, Chinese and Korean database, respectively. Overall, acupotomy and needle knife were the most frequently used. Others like acupotomology, needle scalpel, miniscalpel acupuncture and miniscalpel needle were used within 10% of the total searched literature. Acupotome, stiletto needle, sword like needle, and Xiaozhendao were rarely used. Acupotomy had the advantages of high frequency and consistency but lacked representativeness. Needle knife also showed a high frequency, but the consistency was poor. Though miniscalpel acupuncture and miniscule needle were used less frequently, they had advantages of inclusiveness and clarity. Conclusions: A debate for standardization of the terminology is necessary. This preliminary research can provide a basic outline for the standardization consensus process, and

Totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy using the modified overlap method and conventional open total gastrectomy:A comparative study

Isolated vaginal metastasis from stage Ⅰ colon cancer: A case report

BACKGROUND Distant metastasis occasionally occurs in patients who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer(CRC), but it occurs in a few patients with stage I CRC. The vagina as a metastasis site has also been reported, albeit rarely. Most reported cases of vaginal metastasis(VM) report their origin from advanced CRC. We encountered a patient who was diagnosed with isolated VM originating from stage I colon cancer(T2N0) and herein present the case of this *** SUMMARY A 63-year-old woman visited the outpatient clinic because of a positive result from a stool occult blood test. She underwent laparoscopic anterior resection and was pathologically diagnosed with stage I(T2N0) sigmoid colon cancer. Neither lymphovascular invasion nor perineural invasion was observed. Ten months following the surgery, isolated vaginal metastases were detected on gynecologic examination. The examination was performed due to vaginal spotting. A transvaginal wide excision was performed, and no other adjuvant treatment was provided after discussion with a multidisciplinary team and the ***, a new VM was discovered after 33 mo. An additional transvaginal excision was performed. To date, there has been no evidence of further disease progression. From the time of diagnosis of VM, the patient’s overall survival has been 54 *** VM can occur as a result of early-stage colorectal cancer. Surgeons should consider the possibility of VM following complaints of gynecologic symptoms following surgery.

We report our experience with a synchronous case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST) and intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB) in anelderly woman with neurofibromatosis type 1(NF-1). A 72-year-old woman presented with a 2-mo history of right upper abdominal pain unrelated to diet and indigestion. Fourteen years earlier, she had been diagnosed with NF-1, which manifested as café au lait spots and multiple nodules on the skin. Computed tomography(CT) revealed a multilocular low-density mass with septation, and mural nodules in the right hepatic lobe, as well as a 1.7-cm-sized well-demarcated enhancing mass in the third portion of the duodenum. The patient subsequently underwent right hepatectomy and duodenal wedge resection. We present here the first report of a case involving a synchronous IPNB and GIST in a patient with NF-1.
