Desmoid tumor (DT) is a relatively uncommon, cytologically bland fibrous neoplasm that is associated with possibility of local recurrence but without the potential to spread to other parts of the body. This disease affects mostly younger adults and is the most common cause of abdominal wall masses in women 20 - 35 years of age. However, it may involve nearly every body part, including the extremities, head and neck, trunk, and abdominal cavity;as such, patients with DT may present to a range of general and subspecialty radiologists. The consensus for treatment has changed over the past decade, with most centers moving away from primary radical surgery towards a front-line “wait-and-see” policy. Here, we present a case of a tumor mass that induced hip joint contracture. DT does not usually cause functional disorder. Oncologists should be aware that a desmoid tumor can cause hip joint contracture if the mass occurs in the gluteal region. Moreover, DT resulting in such a functional disorder should be treated by resection.

＜正＞Spectral measurement was applied to monitor degradation of steppe grassland in Inner Mongolia,China. Supply of drinking water for domestic animal is an important for nomadic peoples in Xilingol *** is only one main drinking place（site-00） for animals at the center of Branch No.4 of Baiyinkulun Livestock *** the distance from the village（site-00） can be used as an effective indicator for grazing intensity since the water tank in the village is the main drinking place for *** addition to the measurement of surface reflectance,vegetation surveys were carried out as a function of the distance from site-00 at every 1-km interval to each four directions until the 5-km point. It has cleared that the effects of grazing on vegetation mitigated according to the distance from *** plant indicators of grazing intensity such as Stipa grandis increased in dominance with distance from site-00,whereas positive indicators of grazing intensity,such as Cleistogenens squarrosa *** in growth parameters along the environmental gradients were reflected on NDVI（Normalized Difference Vegetation Index）,in which NDVI was positively correlated with the aboveground biomass（r = 0.77）,plant height（r = 0.69） and coverage（r = 0.89）, *** results suggested that a spectral vegetation index is effective for the detection of the degradation in free grazing grassland.

History of rabies in Japan In the ancient law called"Yoro-ritsuryo"(养老律令、Yoro Code)enacted in 717,the description on"destruction ofmad dogs"is found,suggesting the presence ofrabies at that time. Similar description is found in the"Shorui Awaremi no Rei"established in 1692,also suggesting that small outbreaks ofrabies-like illness in dogs were sustained for nearly a hundred years.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a slowly growing soft tissue neoplasm, mostly affecting young individuals. It usually arises in a deep soft tissue of the lower limbs and trunk, but few cases of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma that presents sciatic nerve pain have been reported. We report a 34-year-old woman with a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma originating in the left gluteal region that initially presented as sciatic nerve pain;she had experienced this type of pain for 5 years before visiting our hospital. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor in the left gluteal region. After needle biopsy revealed it to be a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, we performed the wide resection. Intra-operative findings revealed no tumor invasion into the sciatic nerve. No recurrence or metastasis has been detected 6 months post-surgery. Oncologists who encounter patients with sciatic nerve pain should consider the possibility of less common causes such as the low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma found in our patient.

Surface hydrophilicity is considered to have a strong influence on the biological reactions of bone-substituting materials. However, the influence of a hydrophilic surface on osteoconductivity is not completely clear, especially for superhydrophilic surfaces. In this study, we conferred superhydrophilic properties on anodized TiO2 coatings using a hydrothermal treatment, and developed a method to maintain this surface until implantation. The osteoconductivity of these coatings was evaluated with in vivo tests. A hydrothermal treatment made the surface of as-anodized samples more hydrophilic, up to a water contact angle of 13 (deg.). Storage in both air and distilled water increased the water contact angle after several days because of the adsorption of hydrocarbon. However, storage in phosphate buffered solution led to a reduction in the water contact angle, because of the adsorption of the inorganic ions in the solution, and the sample retained its high hydrophilicity for a long time. As the water contact angle decreased, the hard tissue formation ratio increased continuously up to 58%, which was about four times higher than the hard tissue formation ratio on as-polished Ti.

Prediction of Intraoperative Fracture by Hammering Sound Frequency Analysis and Stress Estimation during Total Hip Arthroplasty

When a stem is inserted into the femur during total hip arthroplasty, sufficient fixation depends on the surgeon’s experience. An objective method of evaluating whether the stem has been correctly fixed may aid clinicians in their decision. We examined the relationship between the sound frequency caused by hammering the stem and the internal stress in artificial femurs, and evaluated the utility of sound frequency analysis to prevent intraoperative fracture. Surgeons inserted one of two types of cementless stems (SL-PLUS and modified CLS) using routine operational procedures into 13 artificial femurs. These are the standard Zweymüllers used in Europe. The difference is the lateral shape;SL-PLUS has holes for removal and the modified CLS has fins to prevent rotation. We estimated stress in the femur via finite element analysis, measured the hammering force, and recorded the sound of hammering for frequency analysis. Finite element analysis revealed that the hammering sound frequency decreased as the maximum stress increased. A decrease in frequency suggested that fixation was sufficient and that continued hammering would increase the risk of fracture. Thus, evaluation of the change in sound frequency during stem insertion may indicate when the hammering force should be reduced, thereby preventing intraoperative periprosthetic fractures. Further frequency change may also predict fractures prior to visual confirmation. We concluded that sound frequency analysis has potential as an objective evaluation method to help prevent intraoperative periprosthetic fractures during stem insertion.

Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer in Patients with Psychiatric Disorders: A Retrospective Study

Background: The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the clinical outcomes of patients with concomitant lung cancer and psychiatric disorders who underwent pulmonary resection at our institution and develop a strategy for treating such patients in the future. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients with psychiatric disorders who underwent pulmonary resection for lung cancer at our institution between January 1984 and December 2011. Results: The study population comprised 13 men and 10 women with an average age of 67.4 years. The histological types of lung cancer included adenocarcinoma in 14 patients, squamous cell carcinoma in 4, and other types in 5. Fifteen patients were classified as having pathological TNM stage I cancer, four as having stage II, three as having stage III, and one as having stage IV. The coexisting psychiatric disorders were neurosis in eight patients, depression in seven, schizophrenia in five, dementia in two, and oligophrenia in one. Three patients were admitted without a full understanding of the operation. There were no major complications with the exception of delirium, which was seen in eight patients. None of these patients’ coexisting psychiatric disorders worsened. No perioperative death occurred. Conclusions: At our institution, we cooperate closely with psychiatrists to care for surgical patients with psychiatric disorders. There is a possibility that such cooperation will reduce the frequency of previously reported complications.

Addressing injury and its associated effects is a multi-dimensional and ongoing challenge. This includes recognizing that injury is a significant public health problem capable of affecting the health and wellbeing of all populations over short and longer terms, albeit in varied ways and intensities. That recognition has drawn attention to the need to take actions to avert its rate of occurrence particularly in developed nations. While in low-income countries, despite the growing burden of injury, there are few school-based studies from which to develop prevention initiatives. Thus this study describes the cause, nature and types and prevalence of injuries in a cross sectional population of students in Southern Nigeria, in order to provide data for use in developing priorities for injury prevention efforts. An interviewer-administered school-based survey of students attending schools in Southern Nigeria was conducted in 2013. The study sample involved 585 students (60.9% male, 39.2% female and overall mean age of 15 years). We inquired about participants self-reported injuries in the past one year (all injury inclusive). When reported, injuries were further assessed according to cause, intent, nature, type, place, and number of days absent from school due to injury. Overall, there were 549 self-reported injuries in the past one year (93.8%) among the respondents (95.5% for males and 90.8% for females, p = 0.6696). Sex wise, prevalence of injury differ by age, school setting and parents’ occupation (p higher in males compared to females [206 (60.4%) vs 87 (41.8%) p = 0.002, and 10 (2.9%) vs 0 (0.0) p = 0.016] respectively. Traffic injuries and falls decrease progressively with age. Homes and schools were settings injuries occurred mostly. Over 68% of the reported injuries were unintentional.
