Gaoligong Mountain(hereafter,GLGM)is located at the intersection of Myanmar and China’s Yunnan Province and Xizang Zizhiqu,and spans three globally significant biodiversity hotspots:the Himalayas,Indo-Burma,and the Mountains of Southwest China.Although surveys of mammals in this ecologically important region have a long history,there is no comprehensive systematic checklist and distribution account of the mammals of GLGM.Here,we compiled a mammal species checklist of GLGM based on thorough field investigations and literature reviews.We also examined specimen collections and applied camera trapping surveys to explore the region’s mammal diversity and distribution patterns.We recorded 212 mammal species in nine orders,33 families,and 119 genera,which accounts for 30.5%of China’s mammal species,and a high proportion of nationally protected(50)and globally threatened(29)species.Mammal species richness showed a symmetrical unimodal curve along the elevation gradient,peaking at intermediate elevations(2000 to 2500 m above sea level(asl)),and increasing generally from south to north,slightly higher in the east slope than in the west.Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed three distinct elevational assemblages(3500 m asl)and significant south-to-north variation,but no substantial differences between the east and west slopes.The GLGM present a unique conservation value due to the high proportions of rare and endangered mammal species,complex faunal composition,high endemism,and being the distribution boundary for many species.This study is an important phased account of mammal diversity in GLGM and makes a prospect for future research.

Isolated alpine habitats reveal disparate ecological drivers of taxonomic and functional beta-diversity of small mammal assemblages

The interpretation of patterns of biodiversity requires the disentanglement of geographical and environmental variables.Disjunct alpine communities are geographically isolated from one another but experience similar environmental impacts.Isolated homogenous habitats may promote speciation but constrain functional trait variation.In this study,we examined the hypothesis that dispersal limitation promotes taxonomic divergence,whereas habitat similarity in alpine mountains leads to functional convergence.We performed standardized field investigation to sample non-volant small mammals from 18 prominent alpine sites in the Three Parallel Rivers area.We estimated indices quantifying taxonomic and functional alpha-and beta-diversity,as well as beta-diversity components.We then assessed the respective importance of geographical and environmental predictors in explaining taxonomic and functional compositions.No evidence was found to show that species were more functionally similar than expected in local assemblages.However,the taxonomic turnover components were higher than functional ones(0.471±0.230 vs.0.243±0.215),with nestedness components showing the opposite pattern(0.063±0.054 vs.0.269±0.225).This indicated that differences in taxonomic compositions between sites occurred from replacement of functionally similar species.Geographical barriers were the key factor influencing both taxonomic total dissimilarity and turnover components,whereas functional betadiversity was primarily explained by climatic factors such as minimum temperature of the coldest month.Our findings provide empirical evidence that taxonomic and functional diversity patterns can be independently driven by different ecological processes.Our results point to the importance of clarifying different components of beta-diversity to understand the underlying mechanisms of community assembly.These results also shed light on the assembly rules and ecological processes of terrestrial mammal communities in extreme environments.

The global proliferation of protected areas(PAs) is an enduring means of combating biodiversity declines and was a commendable tool towards achieving Aichi Biodiversity Target 11. Even so, the effectiveness of PAs in conserving biodiversity remains debated due to continued species declines and ecosystem degradations within them. It is increasingly recognized that merely designating new and expanding existing PAs does not guarantee the protection of critical ecosystems and species. Instead, their management must be effective for meaningful long-term conservational success and viability, integral to the success of the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework goals and targets. Evaluating the effectiveness of biodiversity management tools such as PAs requires a good understanding of how institutional(such as PA governances and designations) and noninstitutional(such as abiotic [environmental and anthropogenic] factors) variables affect species diversity and distribution patterns and ecological-evolutionary opportunities, especially in biodiversity-rich countries such as Kenya. In this study, we coupled data on Kenya's terrestrial mammal occurrences, phylogenetic associations, functional traits, and abiotic factors to derive multiple taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity indices. We then inferred PAs' management effectiveness based on the diversity and distribution patterns, their association with governance and designation types, and with several abiotic factors using multivariate statistics and regression analysis. We found that nearly all terrestrial mammals in Kenya were represented in at least one PA(≈ 98%), although the range proportion overlapping in PAs was low. Spatial conservation prioritization analysis showed that a best-solution reserve system required significant expansion of current PAs to achieve a one-third coverage of focal species ranges. 高山树线是全球山地系统中广泛存在的生态分界线,既是许多适应寒冷高海拔环境动物的主要栖息地,也是许多中海拔动物的分布上缘。目前对高山树线栖息地小型兽类群落的形成和维持过程了解较少。我们利用滇西北三江并流区18个高山树线栖息地的规范化野外调查数据,同时通过文献资料收集了覆盖整个研究区域的小型兽类物种库、谱系树和性状数据,对小型兽类的群落构建过程展开了探讨。基于系统发育树距离和生态位空间分别计算了谱系和功能多样性指数,并使用零模型和线性混合效应模型分析了物种、谱系和功能多样性指数在高山树线区域的海拔梯度分布模式。结果显示传统的谱系多样性和功能多样性指数不足以较好地对高山树线的小型兽类群落构建过程起到指示作用。通过将小型兽类的性状分解为形态适应、资源获取和栖息地利用3种不同的生态位成分,发现了高山树线栖息地的小型兽类群落在形态适应上没有显著受到栖息地过滤或相似性限制的作用。但是随着暗针叶林转变为草甸和流石滩生境,群落在资源获取生态位上受到限制相似性的作用逐渐加强,而栖息地利用生态位受到栖息地过滤的作用逐渐加强。上述结果说明,在不同的生态位成分上,栖息地过滤和限制相似性这两个相反的机制同时塑造了高山树线小型兽类群落的构建过程。由于这两个过程在不同高山树线栖息地中起到的作用程度不同,使得小型兽类的多样性指数在各个地点间呈现多种不同的分布模式。本研究为极端环境下的动物群落构建过程提供了新的见解,同时也为多重环境胁迫因素下的兽类生态位适应机制带来了启示。

理解群落构建过程可以解释生物多样性格局的形成和维持,对于生物多样性保护起到关键作用。生态位理论是群落构建研究的核心框架之一。该理论认为群落构建是生物作用和非生物作用将区域物种库中的物种选入局域群落的确定过程。近年来,随着该领域受到的关注越来越多,研究者不但从物种、谱系或功能等生物多样性维度来研究群落构建,所使用的多样性指数、零模型算法和物种库界定方式等也多种多样。本文回顾了从生物多样性不同维度研究群落构建的优势与局限,总结了群落构建过程中构建零模型和界定物种库时需要注意的一些问题,介绍了部分群落构建研究的最新方法学进展和研究成果。最后,结合近年来的研究案例提出了对未来群落构建研究的一些建议。

Vulnerability of Kenya’s Water Towers to Future Climate Change: An Assessment to Inform Decision Making in Watershed Management

Recent trends show that in the coming decades, Kenya’s natural resources will continue to face significant pressure due to both anthropogenic and natural stressors, and this will have greater negative impacts on socio-economic development including food security and livelihoods. Understanding the impacts of these stressors is an important step to developing coping and adaptation strategies at every level. The Water Towers of Kenya play a critical role in supplying ecosystems services such as water supply, timber and non-timber forest products and regulating services such as climate and water quantity and quality. To assess the vulnerability of the Water Towers to climate change, the study adopted the IPCC AR4 framework that defines vulnerability as a function of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The historical trends in rainfall indicate that the three Water Towers show a declining rainfall trend during the March-April-May (MAM) main rainy season, while the October-November-December (OND) short rainy season shows an increase. The temperature patterns are consistent with the domain having a common rising trend with a rate in the range of 0.3°C to 0.5°C per decade. Projection analysis considered three emissions scenarios: low-emission (mitigation) scenario (RCP2.6), a medium-level emission scenario (RCP4.5), and a high-emission (business as usual) scenario (RCP8.5). The results of the high-emission scenario show that the annual temperature over the Water Towers could rise by 3.0°C to 3.5
