Introduction Using the information obtained from analysis of 16S rRnA gene sequences,Tsukamurella was first proposed as a genus in 1988,1 despite the fact that the first strain of this group of bacteria was described in 1941,2 and the first human isolate was reported in 1971.3 Similar to related genera of the order Corynebacteriales,such as nocardia,Rhodococcus,and Gordonia,members of Tsukamurella are Gram-positive,aerobic,catalase-positive,and partially acid-fast as a result of the presence of mycolic acid in the cell *** to their similar phenotypic properties,differentiation of these genera and speciation within these genera is difficult in most clinical microbiology laboratories.

The development of high-performance and low-cost oxygen reduction and evolution catalysts that can be easily integrated into existing devices is crucial for the wide deployment of energy storage systems that utilize O2-H2O chemistries, such as regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we report an nHB-activated n-doped hierarchical carbon （nHC） catalyst synthesized via a scalable route, and demonstrate its device integration. The nHC catalyst exhibited good performance for both the oxygen reduction reaction （ORR） and the oxygen evolution reaction （OER）, as demonstrated by means of electrochemical studies and evaluation when integrated into the oxygen electrode of a regenerative fuel cell. The activities observed for both the ORR and the OER were comparable to those achieved by state-of-the-art Pt and Ir catalysts in alkaline environments. We have further identified the critical role of carbon defects as active sites for electrochemical activity through density functional theory calculations and high-resolution TEM visualization. This work highlights the potential of nHC to replace commercial precious metals in regenerative fuel cells and possibly metal-air batteries for cost-effective storage of intermittent renewable energy.

Effect of Rorrico, extracted from group of Chinese medicines, on influenza A and H1n1 infections

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic and preventive effects of Rorrico on influenza, especially influenza A viral infection, including swine flu(H1n1)in ***: Eighty-nine subjects were recruited in Hong kong and Macao, and divided into treatment group(TG) and prevention group(PG) based on their influenza A and swine flu symptoms. All subjects were prescribed Rorrico or placebo, and monitored by a Chinese medicine practitioner. Blood samples were collected before and after 7-day Rorrico or placebo treatment for laboratory ***: After treatment, there were some full recoveries and obvious relief of onset symptoms in the TG. Blood test results showed that Rorrico produced(a) no adverse effects on subjects' renal andliver functions, muscle enzyme and hematological status,(b) no up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-a and interleukin-18 in both TG and PG,(c) mild yet statistically significant elevation of plasma mannose-binding lectin(MBL) in ***: Rorrico has no up-regulating effect on the participants' immune response, or, equally likely, the immuno-modulatory effects of Rorrico do not non-specifically or unnecessarily promote inflammation when not required. It is possible that oral administration of Rorrico can promote hepatic synthesis of MBL in healthy PG subjects, thereby conferring increased protection against infection.

The diagnosis of bacterial or fungal infections requires the identification of the pathogen etiology in the shortest time possible. Although some biomarkers are used as indicators of bacterial infections, their specificity and sensitivity are highly variable, and there is no direct relationship between the level increase of these biomarkers for mycosis. It is common to obtain negative microbiological cultures in patients infected by non-culturable, intracellular bacteria or mycosis, even though there is a high clinical suspicion of infection. This study identifies the pathogen present in critically infected patients through 16S and 18S/eEF1 genes detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with Sanger sequencing. Thirty clinical samples were evaluated by PCR, of which 40% were positive for fungi, 23.33% for bacteria, 26.7% for fungi and bacteria, and 10% for no pathogen. The PCRs outcomes period for bacteria or fungi was one day compared to seven and up to 14 days (on average) of microbiological culture for bacteria and fungi. Then, we assessed the relationship with the most used biomarkers (procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, globular sedimentation velocity, and the neutrophil-lymphocyte index). This combination of molecular techniques has been shown as helpful in identifying intracellular bacteria and fungi that are difficult to culture by conventional methods. Screening with genomic markers 16S and 18S/eEF1 by PCR allowed us to optimize the time to obtain the result of the infection caused by bacteria or fungi. Also, identifying the specific etiological microorganism by Sanger sequencing was very helpful in avoiding the progression of the disease and setting targeted treatment with better clinical outcomes.

BACkGROUnDEwing’s sarcoma is a highly malignant primary bone tumor that commonly affectschildren. For young patients, multidisciplinary treatment and limb salvage arerecommended, and surgical plans considering the growth potential and boneactivity after tumor resection are *** SUMMARYAn 11-year-old Asian boy had a 1-mo history of a right-sided limping *** revealed a proximal tumor with bone destruction and physealinvolvement over the right femoral neck. He was diagnosed with stage IV(T1n0M1aG3) Ewing’s sarcoma with bilateral lung metastases. neoadjuvantchemotherapy decreased the tumor size and confined it to the metaphysealregion. The patient underwent four stages of surgery: wide tumor excision plusreconstruction with vascular fibular bone graft plus internal fixation;repeat openreduction and internal fixation;femoral lengthening with orthosis after physealmaturity;and orthosis removal and bone elongation (approximately 6 cm).Following surgery, he could walk without discomfort and had almost equal-sizedbilateral femoral heads, indicating physis preservation. The surgery wassuccessful, and normal femoral head growth was achieved after completeremission. The patient was able to resume normal activities with equal length ofthe bilateral lower *** treatment and reconstruction following resection are important in skeletally immature patients with Ewing’s sarcoma to improve quality of life.

Fluorescence sensors based on a trifluoroacetophone compound doped in ethyl cellulose (EC) thin films have been developed for the detection of methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol (isopropanol, PriOH) vapors. Thin-film sensors are prepared with 4-dibutylamino-4’-(trifluoroacetyl)stilbene (Chromoionophore IX or CIX) as the fluorescent dye and its solution in EC was spin-coated onto glass slides. The luminescence intensity of the dye (555 nm) is quenched when exposed to alcohol vapor. Tested in the range of ca. 0 - 1.5?× 104 ppm (wt) for MeOH and EtOH, and ca. 0 - 2.3 × 104 ppm for PriOH, the sensors gave detection limits of 9, 13, 21 ppm and quantification limits of 32, 43, and 70 ppm, respectively. To enhance the sensitivity of the sensors, TiO2 particles have been added to the films to induce Mie scattering, which increases the incident light interaction with the sensing films. The sensors in this work have been designed to work in a multianalyte platform for the simultaneous detection of multiple gas analytes.
