Background:Participation in sports is associated with many benefits to all aspects of health;however,it also comes with the risk of injury,particularly ***-disclosure and care seeking following a concussion are especially important because of the lack of outwardly visible signs and/or *** recent research has explored factors affecting concussion disclosure,use of isolated methodologies limits the ability to contextualize how disclosure or nondisclosure ***,the purpose of this study was to describe the factors and expectations of National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA)athletes that may influence concussion ***:This mixed-methods convergent parallel research study included 25 NCAA Division I athletes representing 13 sports,all of whom completed a concussion-education session with pre-/post-test surveys and a semistructured *** athletes were at least 18 years old and on an NCAA *** surveys focused on previous concussion-related disclosure behaviors,knowledge,attitudes,beliefs,norms,and intentions about disclosing *** focused on the athletes’experiences related to concussion *** data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney U *** were analyzed using a Consensual Qualitative Research ***:Participants had good concussion knowledge(median=46.0),positive attitudes(median=38.0),strong beliefs(median=13.0),and strong intentions to disclose concussion symptoms(median=7.0).None of the constructs differed by participants’*** quantitative findings were mostly positive,interview data highlighted factors that may explain why some participants are successful in disclosing concussions and why others may find disclosure *** efforts,sport culture,and medical professional presence were the primary facilitators discussed by ***,pressure,and a lack of team support were perceived as di

Objective:Since concussion is the most common injury in ice hockey,the objective of the current study was to elucidate risk factors,specific mechanisms,and clinical presentations of concussion in men’s and women’s ice ***:Ice hockey players from 5 institutions participating in the Concussion Assessment,Research,and Education Consortium were eligible for the current *** who sustained a concussion outside of this sport were *** were 332(250 males,82 females)athletes who participated in ice hockey,and 47(36 males,11 females)who sustained a ***:Previous concussion(odds ratio(OR)=2.00;95%confidence interval(95%CI):1.02‒3.91)was associated with increased incident concussion odds,while wearing a mouthguard was protective against incident concussion(OR=0.43;95%CI:0.22‒0.85).Overall,concussion mechanisms did not significantly differ between *** were specific differences in how concussions presented clinically across male and female ice hockey players,***(9.09%)were less likely than males(41.67%)to have a delayed symptom onset(p=0.045).Additionally,females took significantly longer to reach asymptomatic(p=0.015)and return-to-play clearance(p=0.005).Within the first 2 weeks post-concussion,86.11%of males reached asymptomatic,while only 45.50%of females reached the same phase of *** males(91.67%)were cleared for return to play within 3 weeks of their concussion,compared to less than half(45.50%)of ***:The current study proposes possible risk factors,mechanisms,and clinical profiles to be validated in future concussions studies with larger female sample *** specific risk factors,concussion mechanisms,and clinical profiles of concussion in collegiate ice hockey may generate ideas for future concussion prevention or intervention studies.

Development of internal COI primers to improve and extend barcoding of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacini)

Accurate species-level identifications underpin many aspects of basic and applied biology;however,identifications can be hampered by a lack of discriminating morphological characters,taxonomic expertise or *** approaches,such as DNA"barcoding"of the cytochrome c oxidase(COI)gene,are argued to overcome these ***,nuclear encoding of mitochondrial genes(numts)and poor amplification success of suboptimally preserved specimens can lead to erroneous *** insect group for which these molecular and morphological problems are significant are the dacine fruit flies(Diptera:Tephritidae:Dacini).We addressed these issues associated with COI barcoding in the dacines by first assessing several"universal"COI primers against public mitochondrial genome and numt sequences for dacine *** then modified a set of four primers that more closely matched true dacine COI sequence and amplified two overlapping portions of the COI barcode *** new primers were tested alongside universal primers on a selection of dacine species,including both fresh preserved and decades-old dry ***,Bactrocera tiyoni mitochondrial and nuclear genomes were compared to identify putative *** numt clades were identified,three of which were amplified using existing universal *** contrast,our new primers preferentially amplified the"true"mitochondrial COI barcode in all dacine species *** new primers also successfully amplified partial barcodes from dry specimens for which full length barcodes were *** we recommend these new primers be incorporated into the suites of primers used by diagnosticians and quarantine labs for the accurate identification of dacine species.

Management and prevention of acute and chronic lateral ankle instability in athletic patient populations

Acute and chronic lateral ankle instability are common in high-demand patient populations. If not managed appropriately, patients may experience recurrent instability, chronic pain, osteochondral lesions of the talus, premature osteoarthritis, and other significantlong-term disability. Certain populations, including young athletes, military personnel and those involved in frequent running, jumping, and cutting motions, are at increased risk. Proposed risk factors include prior ankle sprain, elevated body weight or body mass index, female gender, neuromuscular deficits, postural imbalance, foot/ankle malalignment, and exposure to at-risk athletic activity. Prompt, accurate diagnosis is crucial, and evidence-based, functional rehabilitation regimens have a proven track record in returning active patients to work and sport. When patients fail to improve with physical therapy and external bracing, multiple surgical techniques have been described with reliable results, including both anatomic and nonanatomic reconstructive methods. Anatomic repair of the lateral ligamentous complex remains the gold standard for recurrent ankle instability, and it effectively restores native ankle anatomy and joint kinematics while preserving physiologic ankle and subtalar motion. Further preventative measures may minimize the risk of ankle instability in athletic cohorts, including prophylactic bracing and combined neuromuscular and proprioceptive training programs. These interventions have demonstrated benefit in patients at heightened risk for lateral ankle sprain and allow active cohorts to return to full activity without adversely affecting athletic performance.

Annual survival and site fidelity of free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus): comparative demography before (1983- 1992) and after (1993-2005) spatial confinement

Survival and movement are important demographic variables influencing the dynamics of large herbivores with implications for management and evolution of life-history *** practices such as spatial con-finement and harvest regulation attempt to control survival and movement for the sustainability of harvested deer populations,but a paucity of long-term data exists on these management *** examined annual survival and site fidelity of free-ranging white-tailed deer(Odocoileus virginianus)over 10 years(1983-1992)to compare demographic parameters after spatial confinement(1993-2005).We used capture records(n=174;104 females,70 males),marked deer recaptures(n=42),and dead recoveries(n=68)to estimate sex-specif-ic,age-specific and time-specific *** found that annual female survival was 50%from 1983-1987 during a period of intense harvest,but increased to 93.7%after intense harvesting was *** to spa-tial confinement,annual survival of marked male deer averaged 36.7%-42.5%.After spatial confinement,annu-al survival increased on average for males(58%-99%)and females(77%-98%).Females showed high levels of site fidelity(>99%)prior to spatial confinement,whereas males showed much less site fidelity(≤4.5%for the 2 top-ranking models).During spatial confinement,the semi-impermeable fence effectively increased site fidelity of males(≥56%).These results stem from long-term study(23 years)of a large herbivore experiencing changes to life-history,resulting from changes in management that were applied to the population and aimed at altering population demographics,for sustainability of a harvestable population of deer.
