Recentl. l.nd-use change has been the main concern for worl.wide environment change and is being used by city and regional.pl.nners to design sustainabl. cities. Nakuru in the central.Rift Val.ey of Kenya has undergone rapid urban growth in l.st decade. This paper focused on urban growth using mul.i-sensor satel.ite imageries and expl.red the potential.benefits of combining data from optical.sensors (l.ndsat, Worl.view-2) with Radar sensor data from Advanced l.nd Observing Satel.ite (Al.S) Phased Array type l.band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PAl.AR) data for urban l.nd-use mapping. l.ndsat has sufficient spectral.bands al.owing for better del.neation of urban green and impervious surface, Worl.view-2 has a higher spatial.resol.tion and facil.tates urban growth mapping whil. PAl.AR has higher temporal.resol.tion compared to other operational.sensors and has the capabil.ty of penetrating cl.uds irrespective of weather conditions and time of day, a condition prevalent in Nakuru, because it l.es in a tropical.area. Several.cl.ssical.and modern cl.ssifiers namel. maximum l.kel.hood (Ml. and support vector machine (SVM) were appl.ed for image cl.ssification and their performance assessed. The l.nd-use data of the years 1986, 2000 and 2010 were compil.d and anal.zed using post cl.ssification comparison (PCC). The val.e of combining mul.i-temporal.l.ndsat imagery and PAl.AR was expl.red and achieved in this research. Our research il.ustrated that SVM al.orithm yiel.ed better resul.s compared to Ml. The integration of l.ndsat and Al.S PAl.AR gave good resul.s compared to when Al.S PAl. SAR was cl.ssified al.ne. 19.70 km2 of l.nd changed to urban l.nd-use from non-urban l.nd-use between the years 2000 to 2010 indicating rapid urban growth has taken pl.ce. l.nd-use information is useful.for the comprehensive l.nd-use pl.nning and an integrated management of resources to ensure sustainabil.ty of l.nd and to achieve social.Eq- uity, economic efficiency and environmental.sustainabi

Objective: Factors affecting performance of archery are categorized into psychol.gical. skil., and fitness perspectives. Increase in attention, rel.xation and parasympathetic system activity is bel.eved to enhance the shooting performance of archers during competition. This pil.t study aims to investigate the effects of singl.-dose of Tai Chi practice on archer’s performance and the feasibil.ty of an investigation protocol.under a competition scenario. Methods: This was a randomized control.ed trial.(RCT) with a crossover study design. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were conducted to eval.ate the effects of Tai Chi practice on the archer’s autonomic nervous system activity, attention and rel.xation through el.ctroencephal.graphy investigation, and shooting performance when compared with stretching as control. Resul.s: The protocol.of the study was found to be feasibl. during a competition setting. No significant difference was detected in the outcome measures under the two intervention conditions. Participants after practicing Tai Chi were found to improve significantl. in their shooting performance (p = 0.021). Concl.sion: This pil.t study showed that a real.time measurement of autonomic nervous system and brain wave activities in the competition fiel. was feasibl. and it did not hinder the archers’ performance. There was a significant improvement observed in the shooting performance of archers after Tai Chi practice when compared with basel.ne. The findings of this pil.t study provide the basis for the conduction of a l.rger RCT study to examine the potential.beneficial.effects of Tai Chi practice on archers.

Purpose: African-American men (AAM) have a greater risk of hypertension (HTN) than Caucasian men (CM). To reduce this risk, determining the differences in mechanisms invol.ed in HTN and understanding the rel.tionship between these mechanisms and factors affecting bl.od pressure (BP) in AAM and CM is necessary. One such mechanism is spontaneous barorefl.x sensitivity (sBRS) and two factors are cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and arterial.stiffness (AS). The aims of this study were to determine, firstl., whether there are differences in sBRS between young, normotensive AAM and CM, and secondl., to determine if CRF and AS are significant predictors of sBRS in young, normotensive AAM and CM. Methods: Twenty-three normotensive AAM and 36 CM were recruited from Southern Connecticut State University. Measures incl.ded anthropometric, sBRS (al.ha-index), and CRF (maximal.oxygen consumption [VO2max]), as wel. as AS (carotid-femoral.pul.e wave vel.city [Cf-PWV]). Independent t-tests were used to determine differences between groups and mul.ipl. regression anal.sis was used to determine how much of the variation in sBRS was expl.ined by CRF and AS. Resul.s: The sBRS was significantl. l.wer in AAM (10.3 ± 3.8 ms/mmHg) vs. CM (13.3 ± 5.7 ms/ mmHg), P = 0.03. CRF and AS were not significant predictors of sBRS in AAM (P = 0.25) and CM (P = 0.30). There was no rel.tionship between, sBRS, CRF and AS;CRF was significantl. reduced in AAM vs. CM (45.1 ± 6.3 vs. 52.1 ± 7.5 ml.kg?1·min?1, P ≤ 0.001). Concl.sions: Young normotensive AAM demonstrated significantl. l.wer sBRS vs. CM, irrespective of having fair CRF and normal.BP. CRF and AS are not significant predictors of sBRS in young, normotensive AAM and CM. The attenuation in sBRS in AAM did not resul. in AAM having higher BP versus CM. This finding underscores the need for more detail.d examination of the rol. of sBRS in the etiol.gy of HTN in AAM.
