Individual behavioral variation is ubiquitous across taxa and important to understand if we wish to fully use beha- vioral data to understand the ecology and evolution of organisms. Only recently have studies of individual variation in dispersal behavior become a focus of research. A better understanding of individual variation in dispersal behavior is likely to improve our understanding of population dynamics. In particular, the dynamics of critically small populations （endangered species） and large populations （pest species） may be driven by unique dispersal variants. Here we documented individual variation in the ballooning dispersal behavior of Western black widow spiderlings Latrodectus hesperus, an urban pest species found in superabundant in- festations throughout cities of the desert Southwest USA. We found a great deal of family-level variation in ballooning dispersal, and this variation was highly consistent （repeatable） across time. Maternal egg investment was a poor predictor of this ballooning dispersal. Instead, we show that spiderlings reared in isolation are significantly slower to disperse than spiderlings raised in a more natural setting surrounded by full siblings. Thus, our study examines a widespread but poorly understood dispersal behavior （ballooning）, and suggests urban pest population dynamics are likely driven by the interaction of variation in individuals, families and social environments

Insect herbivore outbreaks frequently occur and this may be due to factors that restrict top-down control by parasitoids, for example, host-parasitoid asynchrony, hyperparasitization, resource limitation and climate. Few studies have examined hostparasitoid density relationships during an in sect herbivore outbreak in a n atural ecosystem with diverse parasitoids. We studied parasitization patterns of Cardiaspina psyllids during an outbreak in a Eucalyptus woodland. First, we established the trophic roles of the parasitoids through a species-specific multiplex PCR approach on mummies from which parasitoids emerged. Then, we assessed host-parasitoid density relationships across three spatial scales (leaf, tree and site) over one yeas We detected four endoparasitoid species of the family Encyrtidae (Hymenoptera);two primary parasitoid and one heteronomous hyperparasitoid Psyllaephagus species (the latter with female development as a primary parasitoid and male development as a hyperparasitoid), and the hyperparasitoid Coccidoctonuspsyllae. Parasitoid development was host-synchronized, although synchrony between sites appeared constrained during winter (due to temperature differences). Parasitization was predominantly driven by one primary parasitoid species and was mostly inversely host-density dependent across the spatial scales. Hyperparasitization by C. psyllae was psyllid-density dependent at the site scale, however, this only impacted the rarer primary parasitoid. High larval parasitoid mortality due to density-dependent nymphal psyllid mortality (a consequence of resource limitation) compounded by a summer heat wave was incorporated in the assessment and resulted in density independence of host-parasitoid relationships. As such, high larval parasitoid mortality during insect herbivore outbreaks may contribute to the absence of host density-dependent parasitization during outbreak events.

The UK Met Office Unified Model（UM） is employed by many weather forecasting agencies around the globe. This model is designed to run across spatial and time scales and known to produce skillful predictions for large-scale weather systems. However, the model has only recently begun running operationally at horizontal grid spacings of ～1.5 km [e.g.,at the UK Met Office and the Korea Meteorological Administration（KMA）]. As its microphysics scheme was originally designed and tuned for large-scale precipitation systems, we investigate the performance of UM microphysics to determine potential inherent biases or weaknesses. Two rainfall cases from the KMA forecasting system are considered in this study： a Changma（quasi-stationary） front, and Typhoon Sanba（2012）. The UM output is compared to polarimetric radar observations in terms of simulated polarimetric radar variables. Results show that the UM generally underpredicts median reflectivity in stratiform rain, producing high reflectivity cores and precipitation gaps between them. This is partially due to the diagnostic rain intercept parameter formulation used in the one-moment microphysics scheme. Model drop size is generally both underand overpredicted compared to observations. UM frozen hydrometeors favor generic ice（crystals and snow） rather than graupel, which is reasonable for Changma and typhoon cases. The model performed best with the typhoon case in terms of simulated precipitation coverage.

Detection of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)p24 protein at a single pg/ml concentration in point-of-care(POC)settings is important because it can facilitate acute HIV infection diagnosis with a detection sensitivity approaching that of laboratory-based ***,the limit of detection(LOD)of lateral flow immunoassays(LFAs),the most prominent POC diagnostic platform,falls short of that of laboratory protein detection methods such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Here,we report the development and optimization of a thermal contrast amplification(TCA)LFA that will allow ultrasensitive detection of 8 pg/ml p24 protein spiked into human serum at POC,approaching the LOD of a laboratory *** achieve this aim,we pursued several innovations as follows:(a)defining a new quantitative figure of merit for LFA design based on the specific to nonspecific binding ratio(BR);(b)using different sizes and shapes of gold nanoparticles(GNPs)in the systematic optimization of TCA LFA designs;and(c)exploring new laser wavelengths and power regimes for TCA LFA ***,we optimized the blocking buffer for the membrane and running buffer by quantitatively measuring the BR using a TCA *** TCA reader interprets the thermal signal(i.e.,temperature)of GNPs within the membrane when irradiated by a laser at the plasmon resonance wavelength of the *** process results in higher detection and quantitation of GNPs than in traditional visual detection(i.e.,color intensity).Further,we investigated the effect of laser power(30,100,200 mW),GNP size and shape(30 and 100 nm gold spheres,150 nm gold-silica shells),and laser wavelength(532,800 nm).Applying these innovations to a new TCA LFA design,we demonstrated that 100nm spheres with a 100 mW 532 nm laser provided the best performance(i.e.,LOD=8pg/ml).This LOD is significantly better than that of the current colorimetric LFA and is in the range of the laboratory-based p24 *** summary,this TCA LFA for p24 prote

Intestinal Stoma Prolapse and Surgical Treatments of This Condition in Children: A Systematic Review and a Retrospective Study

Background: An intestinal stoma is a surgical opening of the intestine, mostly sutured to the anterior abdominal wall. Stoma prolapse is one of the common complications of stoma. A significant number of stoma prolapse patients require surgical correction. Aim: The first part of this thesis is a literature review of intestinal stoma prolapse and its surgical treatments. The second part is an evaluation of the effect of surgical treatments of this condition on children at OUS-R. Methods: Literature—A literature search was performed. Fifty-seven English-language studies were selected. Methods: Patients evaluation: Design, Setting, and Participants—A retrospective review of pediatric patients (<13 years) surgically treated for intestinal stoma prolapse at OUS-R. Results: Literature—Incidence of intestinal stoma prolapse for children varies from 8.1% to 25.6%. Many proposed surgical repair procedures for stoma prolapse are available and vary from being ineffective to 100% effective. Results: Patients evaluation at OUS-R—From 2001 to 2013, 14 of the 304 children with stoma (4.6%), experienced stoma prolapse. Nine stoma prolapse were surgically corrected: Median age at stoma formation for the 9 patients was 1.7 years. Surgical procedures and success rate: Median 2, range 1 - 9 operations/person;varies from being ineffective to 50% effective. Conclusion: Limited data suggests stoma prolapse repair is a surgical challenge. Thus, preferably when possible, closure of the stoma would be most suitable. Incidence of stoma prolapse in our series of pediatric patients at Oslo University Hospital is lower than most published incidence in the pediatric medical literature.

Objective:To investigate the antimicrobial activity of Clitoria ternatea(***) against the fish pathogens viz.,Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***),Escherichia coli(***),Klebsiella pneumonia(***),Bacillus subtilis(***),Aeromonas formican(***)s, Aeromonas hydrophila(***) and Streptococcus agalactiae(*** )isolated from diseased Tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus).Methods:The extracts of *** was tested against ***,***,***,***,***,*** and *** by the agar well diffusion ***:Different extracts of *** showed inhibitory effects against ***,***,***,***,***,*** and S. *** acetate extracts of *** showed maximum of zone of inhibition against A. formicans(18 mm),***(19 mm),***(19 mm) and ***(21 mm) next to that ethanol extract of *** showed ***(18 mm) and ***(14 mm) followed by Acetone extract showed maximum zone of inhibition ***(19 mm) and ***(17 mm).Conclusions:The antimicrobial activities of all the four plant extracts are comparable and their potential as alternative in the treatment of infectious by these microorganisms was present in the *** testing is conducted on isolates using drugs selected on the basis of their importance to human medicine and use in fish production.
