Intrinsic osteoinductivity—the ability to induce bone formation in ectopic sites without addition of osteogenic factors has been reported in various porous materials. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclast-like cells are thought to play an important role in material-induced osteoinduction. To investigate the influence of osteoclastic activity on intrinsic osteoinduction, we loaded alendronate (10–2 , 10–4 , and 10–6 M) onto porous β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) blocks to inhibit osteoclastic activity, and evaluated osteoinductivity by implantation of the blocks into the dorsal muscles of adult beagle dogs. Alendronate-loaded porous β-TCP blocks increased both speed and amount of osteoinduction, as measured 4 weeks after implantation, with the 10–4 M alendronate-loaded β-TCP being especially active. This finding indicates that β-TCP loaded with 10–4 M alendronate might prove crucial in providing the desirable balance between the degradation rate of bone scaffolds and their osteoinductive replacement. Thus, material-induced osteoinduction may be controlled by local application of alendronate, establishing alendronate loading as a promising therapeutic approach.

A superconducting gravimeter (SG, model TT70#016, GWR Instruments) was deployed for the first time in Antarctica in 1992 at Syowa Station. Observations began in April 1993. Although the SG was equipped with a 10 K cryocooler, its liquid helium (LHe) required refilling twice a year to maintain its superconducting state. The LHe was produced by a separate helium liquefier. After continuous gravity measurement with the SG for 11 years, it was replaced by a second SG (CT#043) with a 4 K cryocooler in December 2003 in order to reduce loads of person in charge for LHe production. Because the manufacturer could not supply a replacement 4 K cryocooler, this SG ceased measurement in November 2009. In January 2010, a new superconducting gravimeter (OSG#058) was installed and had recorded high-quality gravity time series with data acquired every second for more than five years without interruption. Because the personal computer (PC) controlling the observation and data acquisition is connected with PCs in Japan through an Intelsat satellite communication link, we can check the status of observations in real time. It is also possible to fix remotely certain problems with the gravimeter. The observed gravity data are transferred daily to a data server in Japan. Also included in the upload are diagnostic data of the gravimeter such as the temperature of the coldhead and environmental data such as atmospheric pressure. Plots of the daily data are publicly available. The raw data with a 1 s sampling interval are also released to registered researchers. The released gravity time series along with the environmental data are greatly useful for investigating solid earth dynamics especially in the long period bands. We provide necessary information to use these long-range data sets.

We previously reported that many ingenol compounds derived from Euphoria kansui exhibit topoisomerase inhibitory activity. 20-O-ingenolEZ in these compounds exerted inhibitory effects on both topoisomerase II (topo II) activity and cell proliferative activity. Topoisomerase II inhibitors can be divided into the poison and catalytic inhibitor types and 20-O-ingenolEZ is a catalytic inhibitor and inhibits topo IIα through inhibition of ATPase activity, but induces topo II-mediated DNA damage and apoptosis in BLM-/- DT40 cells through the induction of the DNA damage checkpoint, similar to the poison type inhibitor adriamycin. The ATPase inhibitor of topo II ICRF-193 also showed poison-like characteristics in the same cell line. However, the inhibitory effects of ICRF-193 on the proliferation of BLM-/- DT40 cells differed from those of 20-O-ingenolEZ, as did the specificity of its inhibition of the proliferation of other cell lines. 20-O-ingenolEZ showed hypersensitive inhibition of the proliferation of MCF-7 cells and BLM-/- DT40 cells with mutated DNA repair-related genes.

Auditory change detection studies have shown that a repetition effect occurs when the response-stimulus interval is less than 500 ms. However, this response repetition effect is variable. Forty healthy young subjects were asked to respond to target stimuli pertaining to event-related potentials as quickly and accurately as possible (10% target, inter-stimulus interval: 1500 ms). Reaction time (RT) for the targets was measured with electroencephalography. RT was found to be the fastest for the second instance of repeated targets and targets that appeared after 17 or more successive non-targets (p –0.9 μV baseline negative shift of the frontal scalpelectroencephalography100 ms before the upcoming stimulus, suggesting that SPN was observed after every target stimulus. The non-target stimuli immediately after target were accompanied by MMN. Therefore, we concluded that subjects prioritized instructions pertaining to quicker response than those pertaining to accuracy. That explains RTs of second instance of repeated target are one of the fastest and how mistakes occur for non-target immediately after target stimulus. Negative baseline shifts detected by electroencephalography in this variable task with target and non-target event-related potentials provide key elements in the understanding of auditory responses.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the difference of the soil water management in mango orchards between the varieties of “Irwin” in Japanand “Nam Dok Mai” inThailand. Field observations were conducted in mango orchards in Okinawa, Japan and Phrao, Thailand to clarify the water management practices. Measurement of the hourly soil water content in Phrao indicated that the irrigation was scarce and the volumetric water content in the soil was maintained almost constant. in the flowering season. This can be the farmers’ practice for flower induction. After the flowering season, irrigation was frequent in order to produce the large fruit. In the harvest season, the soil water content was relatively high because of frequent irrigation and rainfall. In Okinawa, the volumetric water content was maintained at the same level in a relatively deep layer. The result at the5 cmdepth indicated that the farmer carefully controlled the soil water content. In the flowering season, the soil water content was relatively low. While the orchard was managed empirically, the volumetric water content near the soil surface was maintained over 25% during the harvest season. This result indicates that the farmer performed the good soil water management to enhance mango fruit quality even without technical measurement. A numerical model describing the soil water and heat transfers was introduced to predict the farmer’s empirical soil water management in Okinawa. Using the meteorological data in March 2010, the irrigation regime was predicted using the simulated soil water content. In the flowering season, the farmer irrigated when the soil surface water content reached 14%. Based on this criterion for the empirical soil water management, the simulation result indicated that the farmer irrigated four times in this period. The numerical model presented here can be useful for evaluating the differences in water management practices of local farmers.

临床上有超过一半以上的三叉神经痛病人需要手术治疗,射频(radio frequency, RF)和球囊压迫(balloon compression, BC)等微创手术方法在临床上广泛应用。但关于两种手术方法的镇痛效果、并发症等方面的比较尚无正式的临床试验。该研究采用随机、双盲、头对头试验方案,评估BC和RF手术方法治疗原发性三叉神经痛的效果。病人随机分为BC组和RF组,术前和术后全程对病人进行疼痛、心理和生活质量评估,主要结果是术后6个月内的疼痛评分(0~10分)及并发症情况。研究在完成一半预估样本后,进行了预先计划的中期分析。结果显示:两组病人疼痛评分无显著性差异;同时,并发症、疼痛对日常生活的影响、神经病理性疼痛症状、情绪评分、镇痛药物使用量和生活质量评分等观察指标两组间比较均无统计学差异。唯有术后30天时点,RF组病人的面部感觉异常症状多于BC组,其他时间点无明显差异。基于以上结果,BC与RF两种手术方法的治疗效果无明显差异,根据实验设计,终止进一步研究观察。
