Curcumin, which is traditionally known to have effects on various types of diseases in humans, is found in Curcuma longa L. Previous reports have indicated that the curcumin content varies between the different lines of this species. To clarify the differences in the amounts of curcumin between the lines, we investigated the outcomes of cultivation ex-periments with the hybridization or introgression between C. longa and other Curcuma species using the matK gene of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and the external transcribed spacer (ETS) of nuclear DNA (nrDNA). The results show that there is heterogeneity of the ETS and incongruence between the matK and the ETS phylogenetic trees, suggesting that hybridization and introgression had taken place in the diversification of the various lines of C. longa. Moreover, al-though all of the lines had the same cpDNA haplotype of C. longa, the lines of homogeneous C. longa had a high con-tent of curcumin, whereas the lines created by hybridization and introgression with other Curcuma species had a me-dium or low level. These results suggest that the difference of curcumin content among the various lines of C. longa was caused by hybridization and introgression with other Curcuma species.

This paper describes an overview of our recent discovery – clear demonstration that Li F crystals can be efficiently used as a high-performance neutron imaging detector based on optically stimulated luminescence of color centers generated by neutron irradiation. It is shown that the neutron images we have obtained are almost free from granular noise, have a spatial resolution of～5.4 μm and a linear response with a dynamic range of at least 103. The high contrast and good sensitivity of Li F crystals allow us to distinguish two holes with less than 2% transmittance difference. We propose to use such detectors in areas where high spatial resolution with high image gradation resolution is needed, including diagnostics of different plasma sources such as laser and z-pinch produced plasmas.

Age- and Sex-Specific Impact of Health Literacy on Healthy Lifestyle Characteristics among Japanese Residents in a Rural Community

The study aimed to examine age- and sex-specific associations between health literacy (HL) and healthy lifestyle characteristics. The cross-sectional study was conducted to examine a total 1348 Japanese participants (613 male and 735 female) who took the health check-up program in April 2013, at Tsumagoi Village, Japan. Information was collected by self-administered questionnaire on three communicative and two critical HL items, and healthy lifestyle characteristics listed in Bres-low’s seven health practices. In multivariate logistic analysis, high HL (≥18) was significantly asso-ciated with healthy lifestyle characteristics in both non-elderly (<65 years old) and elderly (≥65 years old) [Odds ratio (OR) = 1.40, 95% Confidence interval (CI) = 1.13 - 1.75 for non-elderly, OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.02 - 1.76 for elderly], as well as female participants (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.06 - 1.94), while the significance was borderline in male participants (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 0.96 - 1.88). Among 5 HL items, the ability to extract health-related information was significantly associated with healthy lifestyle characteristics (OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.11 - 2.07 for non-elderly, OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.04 - 2.30 for elderly, OR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.28 - 2.97 for female participants. HDL-C concentration in the high HL group was significantly higher than that in the low HL group. Among healthy lifestyle characteristics, proportions of smoking behavior (non-smoker), exercise frequency (twice or more per week), and sleep duration (7 - 8 hours) were significantly higher in the high HL group than in the low HL group. The present study revealed a positive association between HL and healthy lifestyle characteristics, which suggests that people are likely to engage in health-promoting behaviours based on access and ability to understand medical information for both age groups and female participants. North American lake cress, Rorippa aquatica (Eaton) EJ Palmer & Steyermark (Brassicaceae), is listed as an endangered or threatened species. Lake cress shows heterophyllic changes in leaf form in response to the surrounding environment. Therefore, this species has received considerable attention from ecological and morphological perspectives. However, its phylogenetic position and taxonomic status have long been a subject of debate. To analyze the phylogenetic relationship of lake cress, we investigated chloroplast DNA sequences from 17 plant species. The results of phylogenetic reconstruction performed using trnL intron, trnG (GCC)-trnM (CAU), and psbC-trnS (UGA) indicated that lake cress is a member of Rorippa. Moreover, we found that the chromosome number of lake cress is 2n = 30. This result indicated that lake cress might have originated from aneuploidy of triploid species or via intergeneric crossing. Taken together, our results suggest an affinity between lake cress and Rorippa at the molecular level, indicating that lake cress should be treated as Rorippa aquatica (Eaton) EJ Palmer & Steyermark.

Surveillance of Fluoroquinolone-Resistant Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Ciprofloxacin (CPFX) and pazufloxacin (PZFX) have strong antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We investigated the sensitivity of P. aeruginosa to CPFX and PZFX in 373 strains isolated from inpatients (321 strains) and outpatients (52 strains) during September 2010 to September 2011 at Toho University Ohashi Medical Center. The percentage of CPFX-non-susceptible (≥3.91 μg/mL) among inpatients was 22.4%, but that among outpatients was 1.9%. As the major resistance mechanism to fluoroquinolones in P. aeruginosa involves modification of type II topoisomerases (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV), we examined mutations in the quinolone-resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of gyrA and parC of P. aeruginosa isolates. Among the 373 isolates, 73 isolates had reduced CPFX-susceptibility and 88 had reduced PZFX-susceptibility. Sequencing of gyrA and parC revealed base substitutions that resulted in amino acid replacements in QRDR of GyrA in 70 P. aeruginosa isolates, while Thr83Ile (in GyrA) and Ser87Leu (in ParC) substitutions were found in 12 strains. These replacements were clearly associated with reduced susceptibility to CPFX and PZFX. However, we also found strains with high MICs to quinolones without mutations in either gyrA or parC. We then investigated the effect of efflux pumps in CPFX-resistance in these isolates. In the presence of an efflux pump inhibitor, MIC values in 12 of 66 strains decreased to 1/23. We also sequenced genes related to overexpression of efflux pumps, viz., mexZ, mexR, and nfxB. Eight of the strains without mutations in QRDRs had a mutation in mexZ, 7 strains had a mutation in mexR, but no mutation was identified in nfxB.

Co-seismic strain changes of the Wenchuan MwT. 9 earthquake recorded with three four-component borehole strainmeters showed NW-SE and roughly EW extensions, respectively, at two locations in the interior and northern part of Tibetan plateau, and NS shortening at a location south of the epicenter, in agreement with the tectonic stress field of this region retical values obtained with half-space effects, such as local crustal structure The observed values of as much as 10-7 are, however, larger than theo- and spherical-earth dislocation theories, implying the existence of other and initial stress.

To investigate the surgical therapies for gastric cancer (GC) patients of age 85 or older in a multicenter *** opportunities for elderly GC patients have expanded in conjunction with extended life expectancy. However, the number of cases encountered in a single institution is usually very small and surgical therapies for elderly GC patients have not yet been standardized completely. In the present study, a total of 134 GC patients of age 85 or older who underwent surgery in 9 related facilities were retrospectively investigated. The relationships between surgical therapies and clinicopathological or prognostic features were ***-nine of the patients (66%) presented with a comorbidity, and 26 (19% overall) presented with more than two comorbidities. Radical lymphadenectomy was performed in 59 patients (44%), and no patient received pre- or post-operative chemotherapy. Forty of the patients (30%) experienced perioperative complications, but no surgical or perioperative mortality occurred. Laparoscopic surgery was performed in only 12 of the patients (9.0%). Univariate and multivariate analyses of the 113 patients who underwent R0 or R1 resection identified the factors of pT3/4 and limited lymphadenectomy as predictive of worse prognosis (HR = 4.68, P = 0.02 and HR =2.19, P = 0.05, respectively). Non-cancer-specific death was more common in cStage I patients than in cStage II or III patients. Limited lymphadenectomy correlated with worse cancer-specific survival (P = 0.01), particularly in cStage II patients (P < 0.01). There were no relationships between limited lymphadenectomy and any comorbidities, except for cerebrovascular disease (P = 0.07).CONCLUSIONNon-cancer-specific death was not negligible, particularly in cStage I, and gastrectomy with radical lymphadenectomy appears to be an effective treatment for cStage II elderly GC patients.

Demands for low-energy microcontrollers have been increasing in recent years. Since most microcontrollers achieve user programmability by integrating nonvolatile (NV) memories such as flash memories for storing their programs, the large power consumption required in accessing an NV memory has become a major problem. This problem becomes critical when the power supply voltage of NV microcontrollers is decreased. We can solve this problem by introducing an instruction cache, thus reducing the access frequency of the NV memory. Unlike general-purpose microprocessors, microcontrollers used for real-time applications in embedded systems must accurately calculate program execution time prior to its execution. Therefore, we introduce a “transparent” instruction cache, which does not change the existing NV microcontroller’s cycle-level execution time, for reducing power and energy consumption, but not for improving the processing speed. We have conducted detailed microar chitecture design based on the architecture of a major industrial microcontroller, and we evaluated power and energy consumption for several benchmark programs. Our evaluation shows that the proposed instruction cache can successfully reduce energy consumption in a fairly wide range of practical NV microcontroller configurations.

High circulating tumor cell concentrations in a specific subtype of gastric cancer with diffuse bone metastasis at diagnosis

AIM: To clarify the biological feature contributing to gastric cancer with diffuse bone metastases at ***: The participants visited the Department of Clinical Oncology, Akita University Hospital, from January 2014 to August 2015. The selection criterion for gastric cancer with diffuse bone metastases at diagnosis includes over 29 hot spots of bone scintigraphy. Circulating tumor cell were collected from 20 m L of peripheral venous blood drawn using a Cell Search kit and a Cell Tracks Auto Prep system by SRL, a clinical laboratory. The endpoints of this study were correlations between circulating tumor cells(CTC) count and therapeutic outcomes. RESULTS: Among 39 patients with gastric cancer, 5 patients met the criterion. The incidence of this subtype was 12.8%. CTC counts ranged from 235 to 6440 cells/7.5 m L of peripheral blood(median of 1724). These values were much higher than common gastric cancers(2 cells). In chemo-sensitive cases, CTC counts decreased within 14 d(median) from 275, 235 and 1724 to 2, 7 and 66, respectively. On the other hand, CTC counts increased after treatment failure or insensitive case from 2, 7 and 6440 to 787, 513 and 7885, respectively. The correlation between CTC count and survival time showed a trend, but did not reach significance(Y = 234.6- 0.03 X, P = 0.085).CONCLUSION: High CTC count is a biological hallmark of this subtype, and can be used as a direct and definitive indicator of therapeutic outcome.

Sintering Condition and Optical Properties of Zn3V2O8Phosphor

One of promising phosphors in vanadium oxide family, Zn3V2O8, was successfully synthesized by a solid state reaction of ZnO and V2O5. Characterization by XRD, photoluminescence (PL) and SEM was done for samples with different temperature and time in the sintering process. Residual percentage of secondary Zn2V2O7 phase, subsidiary ZnO and Zn4V2O9 phases was dependent on the sintering condition. The crystalline purity (CP) was defined by the integral intensity ratio of Zn3V2O8 phase and that of residual phases in XRD spectra, which showed a reasonable correspondence to the PL quantum yield (QY) of each sample. The highest QY exceeding 50% was obtained by the sintering condition of 750?C for 48 h. It turned out that the CP value is a good measure of high QY, which can be utilized for developing phosphor materials and controlling their processes.
