There are two different ways of reducing production cost. One is the efficiency improvement of existing plant with minor modifications, when necessary, based on thorough diagnosis of existing operation. Another way is modernization of the plant by replacing of operating equipment to a equipment with much higher efficiency. The former way is sometimes more economical under certain limited conditions even though the attainable effectiveness may be less than the latter way. In this article, results of application of advanced technology developed by Onoda Cement Co., are described. Coal firing, especially low grade coal firing Is a matter of great interest to cement producer. Onoda Cement had conducted operation to clarify the effect in changing heat value of coal for four levels from 6,700 kcal/kg coal to 4,500 kcal/kg coal by using a 1,700 t/d RSP kiln in Onoda Works. It was confirmed that operation was very smooth and satisfactorily high quality clinker was produced in each level abovementioned under similar production and heat consumption. The use of low volatile matter coal as well as the use of waste fuel have contributed to cost reduction. Cement producers in many countries are now focussing their interest towards the roller mill for finish grinding as a powerful tool for power savings. Further to the development of high efficiency air separator O-SEPA, Onoda Cement has developed a roller mill named OK roller mill for finish grinding. It consumes about 20?0% less power for normal portland cement grinding than modern ball mill system in addition to about 30% lower maintenance cost. As the results of her energy saving efforts, Onoda has achieved about 20% reduction of energy per ton of cement during the past five years.

Reprograming somatic cells using exogenetic gene expression represents a groundbreaking step in regenerative medicine. Induced pluripotent stem cells(i PSCs) are expected to yield novel therapies with the potential to solve many issues involving incurable diseases. In particular, applying i PSCs clinically holds the promise of addressing the problems of immune rejection and ethics that have hampered the clinical applications of embryonic stem cells. However, as i PSC research has progressed, new problems have emerged that need to be solved before the routine clinical application of i PSCs can become established. In this review, we discuss the current technologies and future problems of human i PSC generation methods for clinical use.

Study and Proposal to Build the Maintenance Systematization for Preservation of Buildings Aiming at Long-Lived Buildings

Systematization for the maintenance of buildings enables their supporting system to be more practical than before. This study aims to make the maintenance and the long-term repairs for the buildings to be easier. In Japan, 30-40-year-old buildings seem to have been planned and built with little thought about their future maintenances, which have made them very difficult to be repaired on a large scale. This is why effective management systems about dealing with the data should be strongly suggested. Since the Building Standard Law was amended on April 1, 2008, in Japan, the regular investigation and report for particular buildings are legally obligated every three years, thus a variety of useful data can be obtained through Kitakyushu City cases as well as former data personally obtained. With those data used usefully, systematization for the maintenance of the buildings will produce satisfactory results by building up a connection between those data and the long-term repair planning.

The void evolution inα-Al2O3 irradiated by En≥1 MeV neutrons of 3×10^(20)cm^(-2) and post-annealed from 100°C to 1050°C has been studied by a positron annihilation lifetime *** void nucleation starts at 500°*** the annealing temperature region from 550℃ to 750℃,the radius of created voids keeps constant at a value of about 0.29 nm and the number of voids increases with increasing ***,the radius of voids increases rapidly with the increasing annealing temperature and reaches 1.21nm at 1050℃.

A Breakdown of Obligate Mutualism on a Small Island: An Interspecific Hybridization between Closely Related Fig Species (Ficus pumila and Ficus thunbergii) in Western Japan

Ficus (Moraceae) is a well-known group with specific pollination mutualisms, and hybridization is considered to be rare. Here, we report the presence of interspecific hybrids between Ficus pumila L. and F. thunbergii Maxim. on Okinoshima, a small island offshore of Shikoku, western Japan. AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism of genomic DNA) data suggested that more than one-fourth of individuals of morphological F. pumila were assigned as intermediate genotypes, suggesting hybrids. The hybridization between the two species was introgressive and unidirectional from F. thunbergii to F. pumila. The findings of this study, combined with other previous reports, suggest that the breakdown of mutualistic systems can occur in isolated populations such as those on islands.

Statins as a Candidate of Drugs for Intracranial Aneurysm Treatment

The treatment for intracranial aneurysm (IA) is socially important because of poor outcome posed by subarachnoid hemorrhage after rupture. Further, the incidence of IAs in general public is high and, indeed, in developed countries many IAs are incidentally found through brain check. However, to date, options for treatment of IAs to prevent rupture are quite limited only to surgical procedures such as microsurgical clipping and endovascular coiling. Taking into account unavoidable risks of complication from surgical interventions and numerous aneurysm careers without treatment, less invasive medical therapies should be established. In human IA lesions, the presence of inflammatory responses, such as expressions of pro-inflammatory mediators and infiltration of inflammatory cells, have been reported, which suggests the involvement of inflammatory responses in the pathogenesis of IA. Recent experimental studies using rodent models have revealed the crucial role of inflammatory responses mediated by NF-κB activation in IA formation and progression and supported the notion that IA is an inflammatory disease affected intracranial arteries. To find out a candidate drug for IA treatments, the effect of several drugs with anti-inflammatory and anti-NF-κB actions on IA progression has been examined using rodent models and revealed the excellent inhibitory effect of statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) on IA progression. Based on these findings, the case-control study was recently carried out enrolling patients with unruptured or ruptured IAs to examine the effect of statin usage on rupture. This study revealed the significant differences in the ratio of statin usage between two groups and notably the remarkable reduction of risk of rupture of pre-existing IAs under statin usage at the adjusted odds ratio of 0.30. Performance and Internal Flow of Contra-Rotating Small-Sized Cooling Fan

High pressure and large flow rate small-sized cooling fans are used for servers in data centers and there is a strong demand to increase its performance because of increase of quantity of heat from servers. Contra-rotating rotors have been adopted for some of high pressure and large flow rate cooling fans to meet the demand. The performance curve of the contra-rotating small-sized cooling fan with 40 mm square casing was investigated by an experimental apparatus and its internal flow condition was clarified by the numerical analysis. The fan static pressure of the front rotor was extremely low and it increased significantly at the rear rotor. The uniform flow was achieved at the inlet of the rear rotor because of the special shape of the casing between the front and rear rotors. On the other hand, the tip leakage flow was large enough to influence on the main flow of the test cooling fan by the design specification of high pressure with compact rotor diameter.

A Linear Array Antenna of Microstrip Patch Antennas Fed by the Open-End of Coplanar Waveguides

In this study, we constructed a 4-element linear array antenna using four 20 GHz band microstrip patch antennas with a structure such that the signal is fed to the patch antennas from open-end coplanar waveguides without contact. We investigated factors related to the design of linear array patch antennas. To adjust the maximum radiation direction and reduce return loss, we optimized the spacing between the elements and their shape. With an element spacing of 11.50 mm, patch width of 3.90 mm, and patch length of 4.15 mm, we obtained a resonance frequency of 20.05 GHz and a return loss of -29.59 dB at the resonance frequency. However, in the case of a 4-element linear array antenna structure, undesired resonances occurred in frequency bands other than the design resonance frequency band of 20 GHz. To suppress these undesired resonances and obtaining stable operation at the design frequency, we propose a new structure in which the feed line is loaded with a short stub, and show through computer simulations that the occurrence of undesired resonances can be sufficiently suppressed. Furthermore, we demonstrate the problem of radiation gain reduction caused by introducing a short stub, propose a design method for a new structure in which the feed line has slits between the stubs, and show improvement of the antenna gain by 0.5 dBi.

Effectiveness of ICU Diaries: Improving “Distorted Memories” Encountered during ICU Admission

Background: It is said that after ICU discharge, 40% of patients suffer from acute stress symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, caused by “distorted memories” (memory loss and delusions) due to various treatments in the ICU. This study focused on the quantitative and qualitative effects of ICU diaries on distorted memories that patients encountered during their time in the ICU. Aim: To assess improving distorted memories by providing information during ICU admission to patients to relieve the acute stress symptoms after ICU discharge. Design and Methods: This nonrandomized controlled trial included patients aged ≥20 years who had received treatment for ≥3 days in the ICU. Using ICU memory tool, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS) approximately 1 week after ICU discharge, then HADS and ASDS prior to hospital discharge, the change in mean values were compared between two groups (control and intervention) using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The intervention group was surveyed prior to hospital discharge using semi-structured interviews, and descriptions were analyzed by the content analysis method of Krippendorff. Results: Twenty-three participants were included in the control group, and 17 in the intervention group. When comparing subjects with distorted memories between the groups, we found reduced values for HADS anxiety (7.1 ± 3.8 to 5.7 ± 2.7, p = 0.011), HADS depression (8.6 ± 5.0 to 7.2 ± 4.3, p = 0.003), and ASDS (46.9 ± 13.8 to 43.8 ± 11.4, p = 0.012) in the intervention group. Based on the narrations, patients wanted to investigate facts in the ICU diary while having someone help them to remember these events. Conclusion: Improving distorted memories during ICU admissions may relieve acute stress symptoms. In addition, these patients needed someone to investigate facts from the ICU admission.
