Degradation of Reactive Yellow 86 with photo-Fenton process driven by solar light

The decolorization of Reactive Yellow 86 （RY 86）, one of reactive azo dyes, was investigated in the presence of Fenton reagent under solar light irradiation. The decolorization rate was strongly influenced by pH, initial concentrations of H202 and Fe（II）, and so on. An initial concentration of 40 mg/L was decolored more than 90% after 20 min under optimum conditions. The activation energy of the solar photo-Fenton reaction was 1.50 kJ/mol for RY 86 in the temperature range of 10-60℃. In the kinetic study, the rate constant of RY 86 with OH- radicals could be estimated to be 1.7 × 10^10 L/（***）. The decolorization efficiency of RY 86 under solar light irradiation was comparable to the artificial light irradiation. The decrease of TOC as a result of mineralization of RY 86 was observed during photo-Fenton process. The rate of RY 86 mineralization was about 83% under UV irradiation after 24 hr. The formation of chloride, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions as end-products was observed during the photocatalytic process. The decomposition of RY 86 gave two kinds of intermediate products. The degradation mechanism of RY 86 was proposed on the base of the identified intermediates.

To date, the intraseasonal variation of raindrop size distribution(DSD) in response to the Madden–Julian Oscillation(MJO) has been examined only over the Indonesian Maritime Continent, particularly in Sumatra. This paper presents the intraseasonal variation of DSD over the Indian Ocean during the Cooperative Indian Ocean experiment on Intraseasonal Variability in the Year 2011(CINDY 2011) field campaign. The DSDs determined using a Joss–Waldvogel disdrometer,which was installed on the roof of the anti-rolling system of the R/V Mirai during stationary observation(25 September to 30 November 2011) at(8°S, 80.5°E), were analyzed. The vertical structure of precipitation was revealed by Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar(version 7) data. While the general features of vertical structures of precipitation observed during the CINDY and Sumatra observation are similar, the intraseasonal variation of the DSD in response to the MJO at each location is slightly different. The DSDs during the active phase of the MJO are slightly broader than those during the inactive phase, which is indicated by a larger mass-weighted mean diameter value. Furthermore, the radar reflectivity during the active MJO phase is greater than that during the inactive phase at the same rainfall rate. The microphysical processes that generate large-sized drops over the ocean appear to be more dominant during the active MJO phase, in contrast to the observations made on land(Sumatra). This finding is consistent with the characteristics of radar reflectivity below the freezing level, storm height, bright band height, cloud effective radius, and aerosol optical depth.

The photocatalytic hydrogen production from aqueous methanol solution using titanium dioxide （TiO2） was investigated in the addition of metal particles including copper, lead, tin, and zinc. The results show that only the addition of copper particles enhances the hydrogen production. The copper usage and reaction temperature were further optimized for TiO2/Cu photocatalyts. Under the optimal conditions, the hydrogen production using TiO2/Cu as photocatalysts is approxi- mately 68 times higher than that obtained with only TiO2.

Indirect photocatalytic reduction of arsenate to arsenite in aqueous solution with TiO_2 in the presence of hole scavengers

Lignin plays important roles in the accumulation of organic carbon in *** has highly resistance against biological attack,whereas polysaccharides are easily digested by *** portions of lignin in peat would be modified by *** modified lignin is expected to dissolve easily in *** this study,dissolved organic matters（DOM） were isolated from water drained out of Bibai and To Daeng peat swamp and structural features of DOMs were investigated. Broad signal of aromatic protons at around 7 ppm was recorded in H-NMR spectrum of DOM isolated from water collected at Bibai swamp（Bibai DOM）,which was methylated with diazomethane followed by acetylation prior to the H-NMR *** result proved that the Bibai DOM contains aromatic *** yield of the alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation products were slightly detectable in Bibai DOM,suggesting that lignin in plant residues was modified significantly in structural features, but detectable in DOM. Methoxyl groups of DOM increased by 0.12 mol/C mol after diazomethane *** content of methoxyl group increased by diazomethane treatment due to methylation of carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Acid/aldehyde ratio of alkaline nitrobenzene products of the Bibai DOM was considerably higher than that of the peat sample obtained at To Daeng *** yield of alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation products and methoxyl group in DOM were significantly less than those of peat *** results suggest that the lignin containing in the DOM is highly oxidized than the lignin in the peat *** molecular weight of Bibai DOM was MW *** would be originated from lower molecular weight part of peat sample,in which hydrophilic functional groups was highly introduced by biological modification, to be dissolved in water.

The indirect photocatalytic reduction of arsenate to arsenite in aqueous solution with titanium dioxide(TiO_2)was investigated with various hole scavengers such as methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, formaldehyde, acetone,formic acid and acetic acid. Although the direct photocatalytic reduction of arsenate to arsenite with TiO_2 was impossible, an indirect reduction of As(V) was possible in the presence of sacrificial electron donors to form strongly reductive radicals. The addition of ethanol was very effective for indirect photocatalytic reduction of As(V) in aqueous solution with TiO_2 photocatalyst. The indirect photocatalytic reduction rate of As(V) may be related with both the reaction rate constants of reaction of hydroxyl radicals with hole scavenger and the reactivities for the radicals M· which are produced by the reaction of ·OH with hole scavenger.

Determination of aniline derivatives in water samples after preconcentration with oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes as solid-phase extraction disk

A sensitive and selective preconcentration method using solid-phase extraction （SPE） disk made from oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotubes （OMWCNTs）, has been developed for the determination of aniline derivatives, such as 2-nitroaniline （2-NA）, 4- nitroaniline （4-NA）, and 2,4-dichloroaniline （2,4-DCA） in water samples. Anilines were extracted onto OMWCNT disk and then determined by high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） with UV detector. Several parameters on the recovery of the analytes were investigated. The experimental results showed that it was possible to obtain quantitative analysis when the solution pH was 8 using 200 mL of validation solution containing 2 ug of anilines and 10 mL of acetonitrile/ethanol （8/2, v/v） as an eluent. Relative standard deviations for five determinations were 7.5% （2-NA）, 6.5% （4-NA） and 3.8% （2,4-DCA） under optimum conditions. The linear range of calibration curves were 0.5 *** 1 to 15 ***-1 for each analyte with good correlation coefficients. The detection limits （3S/N） of 2-NA, 4-NA and 31 *** -1 and 26 ***-1 was successfully applied to 2,4-DCA were *** -1, respectively. Our method the determination of aniline compounds in fiver water sample with high precision and accuracy.

Estimation of TBR on the Gap Between Neighboring Blanket Modules in the DEMO Reactor

When one wants to simply estimate tritium breeding ratio （TBR）, the TBR may be reduced from a ＂local＂ TBR for the breeding zones of a blanket module by multiplying the breeder coverage （= the surface area of effective breeding region / the surface area of the first wall around plasma）. When blanket modules are arranged~ the gap between neighboring modules and the frames of the modules are regarded as nombreeding zones. On the other hand, neutrons scattered in the non-breeding zones can enter breeding zones, contributing to tritium production. This means that the estimation method mentioned above tends to underestimate TBR. In order to assess the scattering effect quantitatively, we carried out a three-dimensional Monte Carlo N-particle transport MCNP-5 calculation. It was found from the calculation that there is little decrease in TBR for gaps less than 4 cm when the blanket thickness is 70 cm. The result indicates that such a wide allowance of the gap will facilitate access of remote handling equipment for the replacement of blanket modules and improve access of diagnostics.

The precise control of the crystal morphology of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)enables optimization of its adsorptive properties,as well as enables better integration within functional ***,the influence of such modifications on the dynamic properties of flexible MOFs is poorly understood Here,we report the synthesis of a series of Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(bpy)(bdc^(2-)=1,4-benzenedicarboxylate;bpy=4,4,-bipyridine)crystals having an unusual picture frame-like morphology that results from a restriction in the quantity of bpy pillars added to the reaction mixture during the intercalation of the Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(MeOH)_(2)*** width of the frames is found to correlate with the quantity of bpy,and importantly,causes the dynamic properties of the resulting Cu_(2)(bdc)_(2)(bpy)material to vary between rigid,elastic,and shape memory *** all,the results demonstrate the potential for the properties of MOFs to be optimized via subtle manipulations in the crystal morphology rather than changes in the overall material composition.

Approximate Solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi Equations for Generating Functions

For a nonlinear finite time optimal control problem,a systematic numerical algorithm to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for a generating function is proposed in this *** algorithm allows one to obtain the Taylor series expansion of the generating function up to any prescribed order by solving a sequence of first order ordinary differential equations ***,the coefficients of the Taylor series expansion of the generating function can be computed exactly under a certain technical *** a generating function is found,it can be used to generate a family of optimal control for different boundary *** the generating function is computed off-line,the on-demand computational effort for different boundary conditions decreases a lot compared with the conventional *** is useful to online optimal trajectory generation *** examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
