Localization of urea transporter B in the developing bovine rumen

Urea nitrogen secreted from blood to rumen is a crucial factor shaping the symbiotic relationship between host ruminants and their microbial *** of urea across rumen epithelia is facilitated by urea transporter B(UT-B),but the long-term regulation of these proteins remains *** ruminal function develops over a period of months,the developing rumen is an excellent model with which to investigate this *** rumen epithelium samples of calves from birth to 96 d of age,this study performed immunolocalization studies to localize and semi-quantify UT-B protein *** expected,preliminary experiments confirmed that ruminal monocarboxylate transporter 1(MCT1)short chain fatty acid transporter protein abundance increased with age(P<0.01,n=4).Further investigation revealed that ruminal UT-B was present in the first few weeks of life and initially detected in the basolateral membrane of stratum basale *** the next 2 months,UT-B staining spread to other epithelial layers and semi-quantification indicated that UT-B abundance significantly increased with age(P<0.01,n=4 or 6).These changes were in line with the development of rumen function after the advent of solid feed intake and weaning,exhibiting a similar pattern to both MCT1 transporters and papillae *** study therefore confirmed age-dependent changes of in situ ruminal UT-B protein,adding to our understanding of the long-term regulation of ruminal urea transporters.

The Impact of Orographically-Induced Gravity Waves on the Diurnal Cycle of Rainfall over Southeast Kalimantan Island

Precipitation measurements from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite indicate that the southeastern area of Kalimantan (Borneo) Island receives much less rainfall than elsewhere on the island during the period from July to *** from sur-face meteorological observations show that the diurnal cycle of rainfall differs greatly between the eastern and western coasts of the *** on the western coast of the island is frequent in the afternoon and evening,whereas almost all rainfall on the eastern coast occurs in the ***,the Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived precipitable water (PW) on the eastern coast shows a substantial decrease in moisture in the af-ternoon and *** experiments with a mesoscale model reveal that gravity waves driven by di-urnal heating of the elevated land surface of the moun-tains on Sulawesi Island,which lies approximately 300 kilometers to the east of Kalimantan Island,significantly affect the diurnal cycle of rainfall over southeast Kali-mantan Island.

A numerical analytic process is suggested combining direct boundary element methodwith discrete vortex method and internal flow in cross-flow fan calculated. The process considersnot only function of impeller, but also effect of volute casing. Internal flow field of cross-flow fan ispractically measured, and results compared with that from calculation. It shows that the process isexpected to be used in predicting performances of fluid machinery.

Fatigue Alleviation Mechanism of Citric Acid Determined by Gene Expression Analysis in the Mouse Liver

Citric acid has been recognized for its ability to alleviate fatigue;however, the mechanism contributing to this effect has not yet been elucidated. Our previous study suggested that the alleviation of fatigue by citric acid intake might be induced by the acceleration of gluconeogenesis. In this study, we tested this hypothesis and evaluated whether the intake of citric acid accelerates gluconeogenesis in the mouse liver through microarray analysis. Because the microarray of focus includes 200 metabolic genes, it could be used to provide information on genes related to glucose metabolism as well as other pathways such as inflammation. Eight-week-old male C57/BL6J mice were divided into the distilled water and citric acid groups (n = 6), and were administered distilled water or a citric acid solution (20 mg/30g body weight) intragastrically with a probe, respectively. Forty minutes after administration, the mice were sacrificed by decapitation. The blood glucose level of the citric acid group was significantly higher (P = 0.001) than that of the distilled water group. The expression levels of genes related to glucose metabolism (Gck, Pfkl, Pklr, Pck1, G6pc) were not changed by the intake of citric acid. On the other hand, some transcriptional differences were observed in several other genes, including those related to inflammation, blood pressure, the electron transport system, uncoupling proteins, and anti-oxidation. The expression levels of genes related to inflammation were reduced in the citric acid group;e.g., the Il6 expression level was 0.78 times lower in the citric acid group than that in the distilled water group. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that citric acid intake could accelerate gluconeogenesis and suppresses inflammation. Therefore, the fatigue-alleviation effects of citric acid might be induced by an additive effect between the maintenance of blood glucose levels and the suppression of inflammation.

Capacity of the Pectoralis Major Muscle May Be a Prognostic Factor for Aspiration Pneumonia

Objective: Aspiration pneumonia is thought to be caused by a decline in respiratory and swallowing function. We aimed to clarify whether the pectoralis major muscle and the rectus abdominis muscles are prognostic factors for aspiration pneumonia and to investigate the relationships between these muscles and nutritional status, swallowing function and sarcopenia, Methods: Medical records of 139 Japanese patients hospitalized for aspiration pneumonia between December 2010 and December 2014 were reviewed retrospectively. The volume and thickness of the pectoralis major muscle, the crosssectional area and thickness of the rectus abdominis muscles, and cross-sectional area of the psoas major muscle were measured using computed tomography. Swallowing function, nutritional status, activities of daily living, and prognosis also were evaluated. Results: The volume [Median: (left) 4713.2 mm3 vs. 4232.6 mm3 (right) 4981.7 mm3 vs. 4362.6 mm3 p < 0.05] and thickness [Median: (left) 6.9 mm vs. 4.6 mm (right) 7.3 mm vs. 5.7 mm p < 0.01] of the pectoralis major muscle and thickness of the right rectus abdominis muscles [Median: 7.3 mm vs. 5.8 mm p < 0.05] were significantly larger, while Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) [Median: 6.0 vs. 4.0 p < 0.01] and Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS) [Median: 3 vs. 1 p < 0.01] scores were significantly higher in patients who survived. The volume [Median: (left) 5789.1 mm3 vs. 3706.5 mm3 (right) 5650.3 mm3 vs. 4003.7 mm3 p < 0.01] and thickness [Median: (left) 7.1 mm vs. 5.9 mm p < 0.05] of the pectoralis major muscle and cross-sectional area of the psoas major muscle (left and right) [Median: (left) 500.1 mm2 vs. 432.0 mm2 (right) 563.5 mm2 vs. 446.3 mm2 p < 0.01] were significantly larger, while albumin levels [Median: 3.8 g/dl vs. 3.4g/dl p < 0.01] and MNA-SF [Median: 6.0 vs. 5.0 p < 0.01] and FOIS [Median: 4 vs. 1 p < 0.01] scores were significantly higher in patients with coexisting diseases. Expression of Genes Related to Glycolysis in the Liver and Skeletal Muscle of Rats after Citric Acid Administration

Citric acid is known to alleviate physical fatigue and improve athletic performance;however, the underlying mechanism is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of citric acid administration on the expression of key glycolysis-related genes in the liver and skeletal muscle of rats. Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups—control and citric acid groups. The rats were fasted overnight, after which distilled water or citric acid solution was administered intragastrically;after 150 min, the rats were sacrificed, and the liver and skeletal muscle were collected. In the skeletal muscle, namely soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, the phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase gene expression were significantly decreased by citric acid administration. In contrast, the glucokinase and pyruvate kinase gene expression in the liver was significantly increased. These results suggest that exogenous dietary citric acid suppresses glycolysis in the skeletal muscle at the transcription level.

Effects of Dietary Citric Acid on Metabolic Indicators and Gene Expression in the Skeletal Muscles of Fasted Mice

Citric acid is recognized and utilized as a dietary supplement for its ability to eliminate fatigue. However, the molecular and cellular mechanism underlying this effect has not been elucidated. This study investigated the effect of intragastric citric acid administration on the energy metabolism and gene expression in the skeletal muscles of mice that had been fasted without exercise, using biochemical analyses of metabolic indicators and DNA microarrays. Expression of the genes involved in the glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle and β-oxidation of fatty acids were not affected by citric acid administration. However, citric acid increased the level of blood glucose and expression of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase gene. These results indicate that citric acid ingestion may eliminate fatigue by promoting gluconeogenesis.

Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland(chief cell-predominant type): A review of endoscopic and clinicopathological features

Gastric adenocarcinoma of the fundic gland(chief cellpredominant type, GA-FG-CCP) is a rare variant of welldifferentiated adenocarcinoma, and has been proposed to be a novel disease entity. GA-FG-CCP originates from the gastric mucosa of the fundic gland region without chronic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia. The majority of GA-FG-CCPs exhibit either a submucosal tumor-like superficial elevated shape or a flat shape on macroscopic examination. Narrow-band imaging with endoscopic magnification may reveal a regular or an irregular microvascular pattern, depending on the degree of tumor exposure to the mucosal surface. Pathological analysis of GA-FG-CCPs is characterized by a high frequency of submucosal invasion, rare occurrences of lymphatic and venous invasion, and low-grade malignancy. Detection of diffuse positivity for pepsinogen-I by immunohistochemistry is specific for GA-FG-CCP. Careful endoscopic examination and detailed pathological evaluation are essential for early and accurate diagnosis of GA-FG-CCP. Nearly all GA-FG-CCPs are treated by endoscopic resection due to their small tumor size and low risk of recurrence or metastasis.

The purpose of this multicenter study was to evaluate the clinical performance of an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber cable for re-attachment of the osteotomized greater trochanter in hip surgery. Included in the study were 85 hips that had undergone surgery with greater trochanter osteotomy, including 50 hip arthroplasty procedures and 35 hip osteotomies. The osteotomized greater trochanter was reattached using one or more UHMWPE fiber cables. The bone union and displacement of the greater trochanter were assessed in radiographs for up to 12 months after surgery. Non-union of the osteotomy site occurred in 4.7% of the cases. In approximately 90% of the cases, displacement was less than 2 mm at up to 12 months after surgery. The UHMWPE fiber cable was a good biomaterial for reattaching the osteotomized greater trochanter and may also be an option for osteosynthesis procedures.
