Assessment of the electrical penetration of cell membranes using four-frequency impedance cytometry

The electrical penetration of the cell membrane is vital for determining the cell interior via impedance cytometry.Herein,we propose a method for determining the conductivity of the cell membrane through the tilting levels of impedance puises.When electrical penetration occurs,a high-frequency current freely passes through the cell membrane;thus,the intracellular distribution can directly act on the high-frequency impedance pulses.Numerical simulation shows that an uneven intracellular component distribution can affect the tilting levels of impedance pulses,and the tilting levels start increasing when the cell membrane is electrically penetrated.Experimental evidence shows that higher detection frequencies(>7 MHz)lead to a wider distribution of the tilting levels of impedance pulses when measuring cell populations with four-frequency impedance cytometry.This finding allows us to determine that a detection frequency of 7 MHz is able to pass through the membrane of Euglena gracilis(E.gracilis)cells.Additionally,we provide a possible application of four-frequency impedance cytometry in the biomass monitoring of single E.grailis cells.High-frequency impedance(≥7 MHz)can be applied to monitor these biomass changes,and low-frequency impedance(<7 MHz)can be applied to track the corresponding biovolume changes.Overall,this work demonstrates an easy determination method for the electrical penetration of the cell membrane,and the proposed platform is applicable for the multiparameter assessment of the cell state during cultivation.

CO2 Emission from Electricity Generation in Malaysia： A Decomposition Analysis

In tenth Malaysian Plan, Malaysian government had voluntarily targeted to reduce its emission intensity to 40% compared to the 2005 level by the year 2020 and recently re-pledge to reduce more and declared for 45% emission reduction by 2030. Looking at the country"s high dependency to the fossil fuel generation it is a high concern on the increasing CO2 emission in Malaysia. This paper intends to analyze the current status of CO2 emissions from electricity generation in Malaysia during the period 1992-2014 by applying the LMDI (logarithmic mean Divisia index) technique to find the nature of the factors influencing the changes in CO2 emissions. The decomposition analysis observed three biggest factors contributed to the reduction of CO2 emission throughout the period which is thermal generation effect, electricity generation efficiency effect and electricity structure effect.

Tapping the Potential of Large Scale Solar PV System in Sabah: The Feasibility Analysis

As a developing country with the rapid growth of economic and population like Malaysia, energy and electricity play a critical role towards sustaining and supporting the development of the nation. However, like many countries across the world, Malaysia is facing challenges in reducing the carbon footprint while attending the expanding growth. In the Eleventh Malaysia Plan, Malaysia has pledged to renew and increase its commitment to the environment and long-term sustainability by adopting green growth initiatives. According to the plan, one of the approaches towards pursuing green growth is by undertaking the sustainable consumption and production concept that promotes economic growth without compromising the environment. One of the strategies is to focus on promoting renewable energy sources as well as boosting up the development of the systems. The last decade has seen a growing trend towards renewable energy in Malaysia, particular in solar photovoltaic applications in recent years. This paper will investigate the potentials of installing 5 MW solar PV plants in the state of Sabah according to feed in tariff incentives and its financial and environmental assessment in order to promote large scale solar PV in Malaysia. This paper calculates the economic viability through IRR and simple payback indicators and the environmental impact through CO2 emission reduction indicator for the proposed 5 MW plant.

Fabrication and characterization of TiO2-based dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells TiO2with were fabricated.The phase composition and microstructures of the solar cells were examined by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy,and the energy levels of the present solar cells were also discussed.The results show that a solar cell mixed with xylenol orange and rose Bengal shows a higher conversion efficiency compared to solar cells with a single dye.An introduction of amorphous TiO2layers results in an improvement of the conversion efficiency.

Cyberknife treatment for advanced or terminal stage hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To investigate the safety and efficacy of the Cyberknife treatment for patients with advanced or terminal stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Patients with HCC with extrahepatic metastasis or vascular or bile duct invasion were enrolled between May 2011 and June 2015. The Cyberknife was used to treat each lesion. Treatment response scores were based on Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors v1.1. The trends of tumor markers,including alpha fetoprotein(AFP) and proteins induced by vitamin K absence Ⅱ(PIVKA Ⅱ) were assessed. Prognostic factors for tumor response and tumor markers were evaluated with Fisher's exact test and a logistic regression model. Survival was evaluated with the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazards model.RESULTS: Sixty-five patients with 95 lesions were enrolled. Based on the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer classification,all patients were either in the advanced or terminal stage of the disease. The target lesions were as follows: 52 were bone metastasis; 9,lung metastasis; 7,brain metastasis; 9,portal vein invasion;4,hepatic vein invasion; 4,bile duct invasion; and 10 other lesion types. The response rate and disease control rate were 34% and 53%,respectively. None of the clinical factors correlated significantly with tumor response. Fiducial marker implantation was associated with better control of both AFP(HR = 0.152; 95%CI: 0.026-0.887; P = 0.036) and PIVKA Ⅱ(HR = 0.035; 95%CI: 0.003-0.342; P = 0.004). The median survival time was 9 mo(95%CI: 5-15 mo). Terminal stage disease(HR = 9.809; 95%CI: 2.589-37.17,P < 0.001) and an AFP of more than 400 ng/m L(HR = 2.548; 95%CI: 1.070-6.068,P = 0.035) were associated with worse survival. A radiation dose higher than 30 Gy(HR = 0.274; 95%CI: 0.093-0.7541,P = 0.012) was associated with better survival. In the 52 cases of bone metastasis,36 patients(69%) achieved pain relief. One patient had cerebral bleeding and another patient had an esophageal ulcer after treatment.CONCLUSION

Feasibility of Estimating Patient-Specific Dose Verification Results Directly from Linear Accelerator Log Files in Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy

The feasibility of estimating patient-specific dose verification results directly from linear accelerator (linac) log files has been investigated for prostate cancer patients who undergo volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). Twenty-six patients who underwent VMAT in our facility were consecutively selected. VMAT plans were created using Monaco treatment planning system and were transferred to an Elekta linac. During the beam delivery, dynamic machine parameters such as positions of the multi-leaf collimator and the gantry were recorded in the log files;subsequently, root mean square (rms) values of control errors, speeds and accelerations of the above machine parameters were calculated for each delivery. Dose verification was performed for all the plans using a cylindrical phantom with diodes placed in a spiral array. The gamma index pass rates were evaluated under 3%/3 mm and 2%/2 mm criteria with a dose threshold of 10%. Subsequently, the correlation coefficients between the gamma index pass rates and each of the above rms values were calculated. Under the 2%/2 mm criteria, significant negative correlations were found between the gamma index pass rates and the rms gantry angle errors (r = 0.64, p < 0.001) as well as the pass rates and the rms gantry accelerations (r = 0.68, p < 0.001). On the other hand, the rms values of the other dynamic machine parameters did not significantly correlate with the gamma index pass rates. We suggest that the VMAT quality assurance (QA) results can be directly estimated from the log file thereby providing potential to simplify patient-specific prostate VMAT QA procedure.

Leg Atherosclerosis in Japanese COPD Patients: Prevalence of Undiagnosed Peripheral Artery Disease and Association between Leg Atherosclerosis and Clinical Indices

Introduction: Several studies have suggested that decreased FEV1 is associated with cardiovascular risk in COPD patients. Objective: To identify the prevalence of undiagnosed peripheral artery disease (PAD) and the relationship between leg atherosclerosis and clinical indices, which predict COPD mortality in Japanese COPD patients. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study in 51 COPD patients and 51 age-matched, healthy control smokers. We measured ankle-brachial index (ABI) as a marker of atherosclerosis of the legs, pulmonary function, body mass index, modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) dyspnea scale, and smoking pack-years. We also calculated the ADO index (Age, Dyspnea, and Obstruction), an established predictor of mortality in COPD patients. Co-morbidities including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia were identified from blood laboratory tests and medical records. Results: Five subjects (9.8%) had an ABI 0.9. ABI was significantly lower in the COPD patients than in the healthy control smokers (p 0.05). The prevalence of PAD was marginally higher in COPD patients than in control smokers (p = 0.09), with the prevalence of ABI 1.0 being significantly higher in COPD patients than in control smokers (p = 0.04). In the COPD patients, ABI showed significant correlations with age (p = 0.006), FEV1 (p = 0.004), smoking pack-years (p = 0.047), MMRC dyspnea scale (p = 0.0005), SaO2 (p = 0.001), andADOindex (p 0.001). Multiple linear regression modeling showed the factors associated independently with ABI were age, FEV1, smoking pack-years, MMRC dyspnea scale, and SaO2. Conclusion: The risk of leg atherosclerosis in Japanese COPD patients is higher than in smokers without COPD. Leg atherosclerosis in COPD patients is associated with clinical indices that predict COPD mortality.
