Pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to- lymphocyte ratios do not predict survival in patients with cervical cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical hysterectomy

Background A few inflammatory markers were studied to evaluate their possible prognostic roles in various cancers. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio are hypothesized to reflect the systemic inflammation. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether or not the pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio or platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio can predict the survival of patients with cervical cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical hysterectomy. Methods We performed a retrospective study on cervical cancer patients （FIGO stage Ib2-11b） who had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical hysterectomy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 1999 and December 2010. Data on demographics, clinical prognostic markers and histopathology were collected and analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses for prognostic factors were performed. Results A total of 111 patients were identified. The median neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios were 2.4 and 142.2, respectively. Overall survival and progression-free survival were neither significantly different between patients with high and low neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio （P=0.149 and P=0.108） nor in high and low platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio （P=0.336 and P=0.510）. On multivariate analysis, lymph node status （P=O.O00 and P=-O.O07） and lymphovascular space involvement （P=0.001 and P=0.001） were independent prognostic factors of progression-free survival and overall survival. Conclusions Lymph node status and lymphovascular space involvement were found to be independent prognostic factors for patients with cervical cancer who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical hysterectomy. The pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios seemed not to predict the survival of patients with cervical cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical hysterectomy.

Estimation of Energy Consumption in COREX Process Using a Modified Rist Operating Diagram

Fuel consumption in the COREX-3000 process run in Baosteel is currently higher than the design index. Therefore, mass and heat balance equations for the COREX process were established using the basic principles in- cluded in the Rist operating diagram for blast furnace （BF） as a reference. Thermodynamic calculations were then used to modify the Rist operating diagram so that it was suitable for the COREX process. The modified Rist operating dia- gram was then applied for the evaluation of metallization rate （MR） and fuel structure to reduce the energy consump- tion in the COREX process. The modified Rist operating diagram for the shaft furnace （SF） provided a nearly ideal value for the restriction point W when the metallization rate was increased, while the point P on the operating line for the melter gasifier （MG） moved upward due to reduction in the heat required in hearth. The feasibility of reduc- ing the energy consumption during the COREX process by changing the fuel structure was also demonstrated.

Petroleum heteroatom compounds in various commercial delayed coking liquids： characterized by FT-ICR MS and GC techniques

Delayed coking is an important petroleum resid conversion process.The processability of coking liquids is known to be dependent on the heteroatom compounds present in the coking liquids.Eight commercial delayed coking liquids were characterized by electrospray ionization(ESI)Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry(ESI FT-ICR MS)and gas chromatographic techniques.High relatively abundant heteroatom compounds in the coking liquids were 1-4 aromatic-ring pyridinic nitrogen compounds,carbazoles,benzocarbazoles,phenols,mercaptans,benzothiophenes,dibenzothiophenes,and naphthobenzothiophenes.Coking liquids derived from various feeds had similar compound class types,molecular weight distribution ranges,and double bond equivalents(DBE).However,the concentration of individual compounds and the distribution of DBE versus carbon number of heteroatom compounds varied.A comparison of heteroatom compounds in coker feeds and products revealed the various reaction mechanism of heteroatom compounds occurred during the coking process.The results suggested that molecular-level process models can be developed for optimization of unit operation to obtain desirable products that meet the environmental specifications and quality requirements.

Structures of Textile-apparel Supply Chain: Concepts and Cases

In recent years, supply chain management (SCM) has been in popularity as a new management philosophy for all industries, including textile and apparel industries. The textile-apparel supply chain is relatively complex because it encompasses many participants such as yarn manufa-cturers, fabric manufacturers, garment manufacturers and retailers. Although many scholars are engaged in rese-arching SCM in textile and apparel industries, a systematic classification of textile-apparel chain does not exist. The paper proposes three types of textile-apparel chain, nominated vertical integration chain, traditional sourcing chain and 3P-hub (third party as the hub) chain. Different coordinators exist in different types of chain. Three Hong Kong headquartered companies, Esquel Group, TAL Apparel Ltd., and Li & Fung (Trading) Ltd. are used as cases responding to each type of the structures respectively.

草麻黄和沙芦草是我国重点保护野生植物,然而由于自身发芽率低和生境被破坏等原因,导致种群数量减少,为保护并提高两种珍稀植物的数量,本研究通过室内试验进行了两种珍稀植物的种子繁育技术研究。研究结果表明,不同生长激素对于草麻黄和沙芦草种子发芽影响不同。30mg/L的IAA处理可以明显促进草麻黄种子发芽;10mg/L浓度以上的6-BA和100mg/L的GA3均会明显抑制草麻黄种子发芽及活力。同样GA3浓度高于100mg/L均会抑制沙芦草种子发芽,20mg/L的细胞分裂素可以促进沙芦草种子发芽,40mg/L的IAA可以显著提高沙芦草发芽率。DMSO浸泡10min对种子发芽无影响;浸泡20min时,1%浓度DMSO促进效果最佳;当浸泡30min时,0.5%浓度的效果最佳。因此使用30mg/L和40mg/L的IAA分别有助于草麻黄和沙芦草种子发芽,提高种子活力,同时0.5%的DMSO浸泡30min更适合用于沙芦草种子发芽处理。

A Modified Model for Calculating Theoretical Flame Temperature in Blast Furnace and Its Application

The theoretical flame temperature （TFT） before tuyere, always highly concerned by blast furnace （BF） operators, is one of the most important parameters for evaluating the thermal state of hearth. However, some influ- encing parameters, for example, the SiO2 reduction by carbon, were always neglected or inaccurate when calculating the TFT. According to the definition of TFT, the temperature of coke into raceway and the reduction rate of SiO2 in ash of coke and pulverized coal were obtained by analyzing the samples before tuyere in blast furnace. Taking full ac- count of different factors, a modified model for calculating the TFT in blast furnace was established. The effects of the oxygen enrichment rate, the reduction rate of SiO2 in raceway, the ash content in coke and pulverized coal and the pulverized coal injection （PCI） rate on TFT were determined quantitatively. The modified model was applied to selecting the used coal for PCI in blast furnace. Considering the different SiO2 contents of mixed coal, the calculated TFT remained a stable level. This showed that the selected coal could be suitable for PCI in blast furnace.

Fractonic superfluids are exotic states of matter with spontaneously broken higher-rank U(1)symmetry.The broken symmetry is associated with conserved quantities,including not only particle number(i.e.,charge)but also higher moments,such as dipoles,quadrupoles,and angular moments.Owing to the presence of such conserved quantities,the mobility of particles is restricted either completely or partially.Here,we systematically study the hydrodynamical properties of fractonic superfluids,especially focusing on the fractonic superfluids with conserved angular moments.The constituent bosons are called"lineons"with d components in d-dimensional space.From the Euler-Lagrange equation,we derive the continuity equation and Navier-Stokes-like equations,in which the angular moment conservation introduces extra terms.Further,we discuss the current configurations related to the defects.Like the conventional superfluid,we study the critical values of velocity fields and density currents,which gives rise to a Landau-like criterion.Finally,several future directions are discussed.

Primary sarcoma of the ovary： clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors and evaluation of therapy

Background The primary ovarian sarcoma is a very rare malignancy. The objective of this study was to further investigate the clinicopathologic features and outcome in patients with primary sarcoma of the ovary.Methods Between 1988 and 2007, 24 patients with primary ovarian sarcoma who underwent treatment at Peking Union Medical Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Response to treatment, progression and overall survival were analyzed.Results Patients with ovarian sarcoma had a mean age of （54.3±10.3） years, and 16 of them were postmenopausal.The most common symptom was abdominal pain, present in 14 patients. Of the 24 patients, 16 patients were pathologically diagnosed as carcinosarcoma （known as malignant mixed mesodermal tumor （MMMT））, 2 as ovarian leiomyosarcoma （LS） and 6 patients as ovarian endometrial stromal sarcoma （ESS）. The patients in optimal debulking group had a median survival period of 28 months and 1-year survival rate of 71%. The patients in suboptimal debulking group had a significantly lower median survival of 6 months （P=-0.02） and 1-year survival rate of 29%. Among the patients,23 patients received chemotherapy and most of regimens were based on platinum, 3 patients received chemoradiation.The mean number of courses of combined chemotherapy was 6.6±5.0, and the response was unsatisfactory. The median survival for the entire group was 18.7 months. The one-year survival rate was 58%, and two-year survival rate only 29%.Conclusions Ovarian primary sarcoma has a poor overall prognosis. Optimal debulking surgery appears to be of prognostic significance. There is a clear need for further study to explore the role and the regimen of platinum-based chemotherapy in primary ovarian sarcoma.
