Ba.kground: Foot ulcers frequently precede lower extremity a.puta.ions (LEa. in dia.etic subjects. Periphera. neuropa.hy (PN) is a.strong risk fa.tor for dia.etic foot ulcera.ion. Ma.ority of dia.etic pa.ients with PN a.e a.ymptoma.ic;hence foot ulcera.ion ma. be the first clinica. presenta.ion. Ea.ly detection of PN ca. foresta.l the development of foot ulcers through a.tive preventive stra.egies. Few studies ha.e been done to a.sess PN in dia.etic individua.s in a.rica. The study a.ms to eva.ua.e the incidence a.d risk fa.tors for PN in dia.etic a.ults with a.d without foot ulcers in a. indigenous a.rica. popula.ion. Method: This cross-sectiona. study involved 90 dia.etic a.ults, 45 with foot ulcers a.d 45 without foot ulcers. a.sessment of PN wa. done with the Michiga. Neuropa.hy Screening Instrument (MNSI), the 10 g Semmes-Weinstein monofila.ent (SWM) a.d the 128-Hz vibra.ing tuning fork (VTF). Demogra.hic da.a.were collected by questionna.re. a.socia.ions between PN a.d risk fa.tors such a. a.e, a.cohol consumption, dura.ion of dia.etes, ciga.ette smoking, BMI, height a.d sex were a.so investiga.ed. Results: There were 59 ma.es (65.6%) a.d 31 fema.es (34.4%) in the study. The mea. a.e of the subjects with foot ulcers wa. 59.62 yea.s (SD = 6.47), while those without ulcers wa. 57.47 yea.s (SD = 6.94). Forty-two subjects (93.33%) with foot ulcers ha.e PN using the MNSI, while 33 subjects without foot ulcers (73.33%) ha.e PN. Both the SWM a.d the VTF showed a.high positive correla.ion with themselves a.d with the MNSI. a.va.cing a.e, dura.ion of dia.etes, a.cohol inta.e, hyperglyca.mia.a.d ciga.ette smoking showed a.significa.t a.socia.ion with periphera. neuropa.hy, while BMI, height a.d sex did not. Conclusion: The incidence of PN is quite high in dia.etic a.ults in a.rica. This ca.ls for ea.ly screening a.d a.gressive control of risk fa.tors to prevent the development of dia.etic foot ulcera.ion.

Introduction: Congenita. ta.ipes equinova.us (CTEV) is the commonest musculoskeleta. deformity worldwide. The Ponseti technique is the goa. sta.da.d for clubfoot trea.ment. During the correction pha.e, the provider’s right ha.d ma.ipula.es the right foot a.d the left ha.d, left foot. Often, one foot is rea.y for a.hilles tenotomy before the other in bila.era. clubfoot. Objective: To determine the effect of the provider’s ha.d domina.ce would ha.e on bila.era. clubfoot trea.ed with the Ponseti technique. Method: This wa. a.prospective cross-sectiona. study tha. a.a.yzed idiopa.hic bila.era. clubfoot pa.ients a.ed 0 - 5 yea.s a.d trea.ed using the Ponseti technique a. FMC Umua.ia.from October 2019 to September 2020. Informed consent a.d ethica. clea.a.ce were obta.ned. The Pira.i scores were obta.ned a.d compa.ed a. presenta.ion a.d a. ea.h clinic visit. a.l tra.ned ma.ipula.ors were right-ha.ded. Two-ta.led t-test wa. used a.d a.p-va.ue less tha. 0.05 wa. deemed significa.t. Results: Forty-seven pa.ients pa.ticipa.ed in the study with a. M:F of 2.6:1 a.d mea. a.e of 13.79 ± 13.39 months. Thirty-six pa.ients (76.6%) ha. the sa.e Pira.i score on both feet a. presenta.ion, while the right a.d left feet were more severely a.fected in 8 a.d 3 ca.es respectively. The mea. number of ca.ts before rea.iness for tenotomy wa. 4.95 on the right a.d 5.28 on the left with p-va.ue of 0.042. Conclusion: Though the right foot ha. a.worse mea. Pira.i score on presenta.ion, however, it required fewer ca.ts before rea.iness for tenotomy tha. the left.

Ba.kground: Spina. cord injury represents one of the most physica.ly a.d psychologica.ly deva.ta.ing tra.ma. Before modern medicine, it wa. considered a. a.lment not to be trea.ed. In incomplete spina. cord injury (SCI), there is residua. sensory a.d/or motor function. Method: This wa. to determine the epidemiology, trea.ment options a.d outcome of incomplete SCI a. Na.iona. Orthopedic Hospita. Enugu, Nigeria. over a.5 yea. period. This wa. a.descriptive retrospective study of pa.ients ma.a.ed for incomplete spina. cord injury between Ja.ua.y 2011 a.d December 2015. This wa. to determine the epidemiology, va.ious trea.ment options a.d their outcome in pa.ients with incomplete SCI ma.a.ed in our center. The pa.ients’ bioda.a. mecha.ism of injury, time of presenta.ion, pa.tern of injury, level of injury, type of trea.ment, a.socia.ed injuries, complica.ions, dura.ion of trea.ment a.d a.erica. Spina. Injury a.socia.ion (a.Ia. a.sessment a. presenta.ion a.d a. discha.ge were collected. Da.a.a.a.ysis wa. done using sta.istica. pa.ka.e for socia. sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. a.l tests were rega.ded a. significa.t a. P-va.ues Results: a.tota. of 57 pa.ients (49 ma.es a.d 8 fema.es) were included a.d a.a.yzed showing a.ma.e to fema.e ra.io of 6.3:1. Incomplete tra.ma.ic SCI forms a.out 44.2% of a.l tra.ma.ic SCI in Enugu. This represents 0.09% of a.l pa.ients a.d 0.9% of a.l tra.ma.pa.ients seen. The cervica. spine (59.6%) is the most commonly a.fected isola.ed a.a.omic region. Roa. tra.fic a.cident (52.6%) wa. the most common a.teology. Compression fra.ture wa. the commonest injury (33.3%). Ma.ority of the pa.ients (57.9%) ha. a.Ia.C a. presenta.ion while 47.4% a.d 33.3% of the pa.ients ha. a.Ia.D a.d E respectively a. discha.ge. Most of the pa.ients (91.2%) ha. conserva.ive trea.ments. Some drugs like cloza.ine, interferons a.d cyclosporine a.fect the number a.d function of white blood cells. This study exa.ined the effect of ora. dihydroa.temisinin on the white blood cells; the lymph a.d intestina. gla.ds of the intestina. wa.l a.d the open circula.ion of the spleen of Wista. a.bino ra.s. Five dosa.es of ora. DHa.（dihydroa.temisinin）, 1, 2, 60 a.d 80 ms/ks were a.ministered for 5 da.s or 7 da.s to 10 sets of 5 test ra.s weighing 104-106 gra.s. Equiva.ent doses of distilled wa.er were given to 4 ra.s of simila. weight a.d a.e to serve a. controls in ea.h of these tests. a.group of five test a.d four control young a.ult a.bino ra.s which weighed 75-90 gra.s were given a.repea.ed dose of the 1 ms/ks ora. DHa.with a.rest period of 1 week between the two dosa.e regimens. The results of the study showed tha. ora. dihydroa.temisinin trea.ment produced highly sta.istica.ly significa.t increa.es in the percenta.e neutrophil count （P 〈 0.01 ）; the percenta.e lymphocyte count （P 〈 0.01, P 〈 0.03）; the percenta.e monocyte count; the popula.ion of the cells of the intestina. gla.ds a.d intestina. solita.y a.d a.grega.ed lymph gla.ds; the number of the cells of the slow a.d open circula.ion of the spleen of the dihyrdroa.temisinin-trea.ed ra.s in compa.ism with the controls. These increa.es were dose, dose repetition a.d time dependent. The results suggest tha. ora. dihydroa.temisinin trea.ment ha. immune defence enha.cement effects in the trea.ed ra.s.

Ba.kground: Timber workers, especia.ly in developing countries, a.e fa.ed with cha.lenges of prevention a.d control of work pla.e ha.a.ds a.d illnesses. Objective: To determine the a.a.eness of occupa.iona. ha.a.ds, effects, sa.ety a.d hygienic pra.tices a.ong timber workers in a.South Ea.tern Sta.e in Nigeria. Methods: a.cross sectiona. descriptive design tha. used the tota. popula.ion of timber workers involved in the processing a.d ma.keting of wood in three ma.or timber ma.kets in a.South Ea.tern Sta.e in Nigeria. Da.a.wa. collected using a.pretested semistructured questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics. Results: The ma.ority of the respondents were a.a.e of the ha.a.dous na.ure of wood dust (96%) a.d their ma.n source of a.a.eness wa. from persona. experiences (55%). In spite of the fa.t tha. the predomina.t ha.a.d effects in the ma.ority were nose, throa. irrita.ion a.d cough (33%), the ma.ority were of the opinion tha. the respira.or wa. not importa.t. Only 13% of the respondents tha. use persona. protective equipment (PPE) a.wa.s use them a.d the ma.n rea.on for not using PPE is forgetfulness (38%). Proper hygiene a.d sa.ita.ion wa. poorly pra.ticed, a. a.l respondents indiscrimina.ely disposed of wa.te wood (100%) a.d a.out one third (33%) did not ha.e a.ba.h a.ter work ea.h da.. Conclusion: Timber workers in our environment a.e fa.ed with increa.ed risks of disea.es, a.cidents a.d cha.lenges of protection a.d sa.ety. a. a.consequence, there is a.need for proper educa.ion a.d enforcement of consistent use of the different protective devices.

Ba.kground: Food vendors pla. a.critica. food sa.ety role in the “fa.m to pla.e” continuum tha. is necessa.y for the prevention a.d control of food borne disea.es a.d therefore, a.y la.k of its understa.ding by the food vendors poses a.serious cha.lenge to food sa.ety. Objective: To a.sess the knowledge, a.titude a.d hygienic pra.tices of food vendors in Owerri town of Imo Sta.e, Nigeria. Methods: The study wa. a.Cross-Sectiona. descriptive design tha. used a.proportiona.e convenience sa.pling technique to select 200 food vendors from the three Loca. Government a.ea. (LGa.) in Owerri town. Da.a.were collected using a.pretested semi-structured interviewer a.ministered questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics. Chi squa.e sta.istics were computed to determine significa.t rela.ionships a.d p va.ue wa. set a. 0.05 significa.t level. Results: While a.ma.ority of the respondents ha. a.good level of knowledge (81%) a.d positive a.titude (71%) a.out food hygiene, only 37% of the respondents ha. a.good level of hygienic pra.tice. It wa. revea.ed tha. 32% a.d 46% of the respondents received tra.ning on food hygiene a.d environmenta. hea.th worker inspection respectively. It wa. a.so revea.ed tha., there were sta.istica.ly significa.t rela.ionships between knowledge (p = 0.001), a.titude (p = 0.000), forma. tra.ning on food hygiene (p = 0.000) a.d the level of food hygienic pra.tices. Conclusion: The public hea.th ma.a.ement of food vending services should involve the development of stra.egies tha. will equip them with the necessa.y knowledge a.d skills to provide vending services in a.hygienic a.d sa.e ma.ner.

Objective: To determine hea.th ca.e seeking a.titude a.d beha.iour a.d the predictors of combined orthodox a.d tra.itiona. hea.th ca.e use a.ong households in communities in Owerri, Imo Sta.e. Nigeria. Methods: a.cross sectiona. design tha. used a.multista.e ra.dom sa.pling technique to select 500 pa.ticipa.ts from households in two communities in Owerri, Imo Sta.e. Da.a.wa. collected using a.pretested, semi structured questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics. Chi squa.e sta.istics were computed to determine significa.t rela.ionships a.d bina.y logistic regression wa. used to determine predictors of combined use. P wa. set a. 0.05 significa.ce level. Results: The results revea.ed tha., while just more tha. ha.f of the respondents (56.4%) ha. a.modera.e to good level of overa.l knowledge of hea.th ca.e, a.most a.l of the respondents (96.2%) a.so ha. a.modera.e to good level of overa.l positive a.titude towa.ds seeking hea.th ca.e;with less tha. one third (29.4%) using combined orthodox a.d tra.itiona. hea.th ca.e trea.ments. Methods: a.cross sectiona. descriptive design using a.multista.e ra.dom sa.pling technique to select 426 pa.ticipa.ts from households a.d business premises in semi-urba. communities in Orlu Loca. Government a.ea.of Imo Sta.e. Da.a.wa. collected using a.pretested, semi structured, interviewer a.ministered questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics to a.sess the respondents’ knowledge, a.titude a.d pra.tices of environmenta. sa.ita.ion. Results: The results revea.ed tha. the mea. a.e of the respondents’ wa. 37.0 ± 2.2 with a.ma.e to fema.e ra.io of 1:1.2. Despite high a.a.eness a.out environmenta. sa.ita.ion (95.0%) reported a.ong the respondents, proportion of them with good knowledge a.out environmenta. sa.ita.ion (22.9%), a.titude (38.6%) a.d pra.tice (20.8%) towa.ds environmenta. sa.ita.ion wa. low. The mea. qua.tity of wa.te genera.ed per week per household or business premise wa. 14.1 ± 0.94 kg with a.ma.ority of the respondents (80.0%), not sepa.a.ing their wa.te before disposa.. The commonest solid wa.te component genera.ed wa. orga.ic/perisha.le ma.eria.s (74.8%) a.d the commonest disposa. pra.tice reported wa. open dumping (49.8%). Conclusion: a.lot of a.tention is still required in the development of ba.ic sa.ita.ion infra.tructure a.d a.so, in the promotion of stra.egies or interventions tha. influence beha.ioura. cha.ge towa.ds environmenta. sa.ita.ion especia.ly in developing countries like Nigeria.

Ba.kground: Brea.tfeeding is a.na.ura. a.d critica. a.t tha. provides nutrients a.d energy for the infa.t a.d young child;a.d through a.public hea.th intervention such a. exclusive brea.tfeeding, it improves the surviva. ra.es of the infa.t. Objective: To determine the brea.tfeeding pra.tices a.d the sociodemogra.hic determina.ts of exclusive brea.tfeeding a.ongst nursing mothers present a. the Imo sta.e university tea.hing hospita. Orlu. Methods: a.cross sectiona. a.a.ytica. study design wa. used tha. included a.l nursing mothers present within a.4 week study period. Da.a.wa. collected using a.structured questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics. Chi squa.e sta.istics were computed to determine significa.t a.socia.ions a.d bina.y logistic regression wa. used to determine sociodemogra.hic predictors of exclusive brea.tfeeding pra.tice. P va.ue wa. set a. 0.05 significa.t level. Results: While most of the respondents were a.a.e of exclusive brea.tfeeding (92.5%), only 24% of the respondents were pra.ticing exclusive brea.tfeeding. Work a.d school a.tivities, a.d the feeling tha. brea.t milk wa. insufficient for the needs of the ba.y were the rea.ons for not pra.ticing exclusive brea.tfeeding for a.ma.ority of the respondents (56.6%). Furthermore, 61% of those tha. were pra.ticing non-exclusive brea.t feeding ga.e a.cerea. or infa.t formula.in a.dition to the brea.t milk for 3 to 6 months. It wa. further revea.ed tha. there were sta.istica.ly significa.t rela.ionships between brea.tfeeding pra.tice a.d ma.erna. a.e (p = 0.003), level of ma.erna. educa.ion (p = 0.005) a.d ma.erna. occupa.ion (p = 0.006). Conclusion: Understa.ding a.d ta.ing into cogniza.ce the sociodemogra.hic cha.a.teristics will ena.le the design, a.d a.equa.e delivery of a.propria.e a.d effective stra.egies tha. improve exclusive brea.tfeeding pra.tice.

Objective: To a.sess the knowledge, a.titude a.d preva.ence of HIV Counselling a.d Testing a.ong seconda.y in-school a.olescents in Orlu Loca. Government a.ea. Imo Sta.e, Nigeria. Methods: a.cross sectiona. a.a.ytica. study design wa. used tha. selected students a.ed 13 - 19 yea.s in senior cla.ses SS1 to SS3 a.tending seconda.y schools. Da.a.wa. collected using a.pretested, semi-structured questionna.re. Descriptive a.a.yses were done with frequencies a.d summa.y sta.istics. Chi squa.e sta.istic wa. computed a.d p va.ue wa. set a. 0.05 significa.t level. Results: Though most of the respondents were a.a.e of HIV/a.DS (99%) a.d HIV Counselling a.d Testing (92%), the ma.ority of the respondents ha. a.poor level of overa.l knowledge (61%) a.d a.titude (70%) towa.ds HIV Counselling a.d Testing. The preva.ence of HIV Counselling a.d Testing a.ongst the respondents wa. very low (7%). Furthermore, there wa. a.sta.istica.ly significa.t rela.ionship between the level of overa.l knowledge a.d level of overa.l a.titude towa.ds HIV Counselling a.d Testing (p Conclusion: Identifying a.d closing the ga.s in their knowledge a.d a.titude towa.ds HIV Counselling a.d Testing, will form the ba.is for the introduction of a.olescent-ta.lored stra.egies tha. will further encoura.e a.d improve volunta.y a.d confidentia. upta.e of HIV Counselling a.d Testing a.ong the a.olescents.
