Evaluating the Performance of a EuroDivisia Index Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques

This paper compares two methods to predict inflation rates in Europe. One method uses a standard back propagation neural network and the other uses an evolutionary approach, where the network weights and the network architecture are evolved. Results indicate that back propagation produces superior results. However, the evolving network still produces reasonable results with the advantage that the experimental set-up is minimal. Also of interest is the fact that the Divisia measure of money is superior as a predictive tool over simple sum.

A Hybrid Statistical-Dynamical Downscaling of Air Temperature over Scandinavia Using the WRF model

An accurate simulation of air temperature at local scales is crucial for the vast majority of weather and climate *** this work,a hybrid statistical–dynamical downscaling method and a high-resolution dynamical-only downscaling method are applied to daily mean,minimum and maximum air temperatures to investigate the quality of localscale estimates produced by *** two downscaling approaches are evaluated using station observation data obtained from the Finnish meteorological Institute over a near-coastal region of western *** dynamical downscaling is performed with the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model,and the statistical downscaling method implemented is the Cumulative Distribution Function-transform(CDF-t).The CDF-t is trained using 20 years of WRF-downscaled Climate Forecast System Reanalysis data over the region at a 3-km spatial resolution for the central month of each *** performance of the two methods is assessed qualitatively,by inspection of quantile-quantile plots,and quantitatively,through the Cramer-von mises,mean absolute error,and root-mean-square error *** hybrid approach is found to provide significantly more skillful forecasts of the observed daily mean and maximum air temperatures than those of the dynamical-only downscaling(for all seasons).The hybrid method proves to be less computationally expensive,and also to give more skillful temperature forecasts(at least for the Finnish near-coastal region).

Reservoir stress path and induced seismic anisotropy： results from linking coupled fluid-flow/geomechanical simulation with seismic modelling

We present a workflow linking coupled fluid-flow and geomechanical simulation with seismic modelling to predict seismic anisotropy induced by non-hydrostatic stress changes. We generate seismic models from coupled simulations to examine the relationship between reservoir geometry, stress path and seismic anisotropy. The results indicate that geometry influences the evolution of stress,which leads to stress-induced seismic anisotropy. Although stress anisotropy is high for the small reservoir, the effect of stress arching and the ability of the side-burden to support the excess load limit the overall change in effective stress and hence seismic anisotropy. For the extensive reservoir, stress anisotropy and induced seismic anisotropy are high. The extensive and elongate reservoirs experience significant compaction, where the inefficiency of the developed stress arching in the side-burden cannot support the excess *** elongate reservoir displays significant stress asymmetry,with seismic anisotropy developing predominantly along the long-edge of the reservoir. We show that the link betweenstress path parameters and seismic anisotropy is complex,where the anisotropic symmetry is controlled not only by model geometry but also the nonlinear rock physics model used. Nevertheless, a workflow has been developed to model seismic anisotropy induced by non-hydrostatic stress changes, allowing field observations of anisotropy to be linked with geomechanical models.

Women and exercise in aging

Aging is associated with physiological declines, notably a decrease in bone mineral density （BmD） and lean body mass, with a concurrent increase in body fat and central adiposity. Interest in women and aging is of particular interest partly as a result of gender specific responses to aging, particularly as a result of menopause. It is possible that the onset of menopause may augment the physiological decline associated with aging and inactivity. more so, a higher incidence of metabolic syndrome （an accumulation of cardiovascular disease risk factors including obesity, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high fasting glucose） has been shown in middle-aged women during the postmenopausal period. This is due in part to the drastic changes in body composition, as previously discussed, but also a change in physical activity （PA） levels. Sarcopenia is an age related decrease in the cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle fibers that consequently leads to a decline in physical function, gait speed, balance, coordination, decreased BmD, and quality of life. PA plays an essential role in combating physiological decline associated with aging. maintenance of adequate levels of PA can result in increased longevity and a reduced risk for metabolic disease along with other chronic diseases. The aim of this paper is to review relevant literature, examine current PA guidelines, and provide recom- mendations specific to women based on current research.

Understanding rock strength is essential when undertaking major excavation projects,as accurate assessments ensure both safe and cost-effective engineered *** the cost-safety trade-off becomes more imperative during the construction of critical infrastructure such as nuclear power stations,where key components are built within relatively deep *** these engineered slopes is reliant on rock strength models,which are generally parameterised using estimates of rock properties(*** compressive strength,rock disturbance)measured prior to the commencement of ***,the physical process of excavation weakens the remaining rock ***,the model also requires an adjustment for the anticipated rock *** practice,this parameter is difficult to quantify and as a result it is often poorly *** can have a significant impact on the final design and cost of *** present results from passive and active seismic surveys,which image the extent and degree of disturbance within recently excavated slopes at the construction site of Hinkley Point C nuclear power *** from active seismic surveys indicate that the disturbance is primarily confined to 0.5 m from the excavated *** conjunction,passive monitoring is used to detected seismic events corresponding to fracturing on the cm-scale and event locations are in agreement with 0.5 m of disturbance into the rock *** suggests rock disturbance at this site is relatively low and occurred during and immediately after the excavation.A ratio of seismic velocities recorded before and after excavations are used to determine the disturbance parameter required for the Hoek eBrown rock failure criterion,and we assess that rock disturbance is low with the magnitude of the disturbance diminishing more quickly than expected into the excavated *** methods provide a low-cost and quick method to assess excavation related rock mass disturbance,

1 IntroductionBiological Ballistics, or "Biolistics", is a method by which micro-particle formulations of vaccine can be delivered to human skin or mucosa. A particle acceleration device, the Contoured Shock Tube (CST), has recently been described and characterised experimentally and numerically [2,3,6]. Essentially, the CST comprises a shock tube coupled to a correctly expanded nozzle. The particles are initially retained on a thin diaphragm while the upstream driver section is pressurised with air or helium. Rupture of the diaphragm initiates a classic shock tube flow through the device and consequent nozzle starting process. 作为滁州水文实验系统一部分的1号天然实验流域,面积7897m2,以安山岩为基底,上覆平均厚度2.46m的第四系沉积物。实测了包括地面径流和地面下径流的各种降雨径流响应,后者包括来自非饱和带的壤中流和饱和带的地下水径流。表明这些径流成分有着复杂的组合类型,主要是以地面径流为主的SR型和以地面下径流为主的SSR型,以及中间的和演化的类型。SR型实例中的地面径流量可占总径流的65%,而SSR实例中的地面下径流量可有90%。主要降水的7月,地面下贡献占54.5%,其中地下水径流即占33%。大部分地面径流与降水的18O组成有不小的差异,比较了同时进行测验的3个实验流域,在1400min的降水径流过程中,降水的平均δ18O为-1.210%,而同期地面径流的平均δ18O,2号水文山流域(512m2)为-1.132%,1号南大洼天然流域为-1.065%,3号只有薄层风化碎屑的牵牛花流域(4573m2)为-0.801%。这质疑了现行同位素流量过程线划分方法8个假定中的两个:地面径流的同位素组成不同于降水,天然流域尤其如此;各种水源在汇集过程中的同位素分馏影响并非都可忽略不计。实验流域因降水而产生径流,但所产生的径流却有着非本次降水的组分,这一降水径流悖论发生于各个实验流域。SR型和SSR型总的非本次降水组分分别达16%和64%。
