For recovery of metals from low-concentration sources, biosorption is one of promising technologies and poly-γ-glutamic acid（γ-PGA） has been known as a potential biosorbent for recovery of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Effects of solution pH on recovery of rare-earth metal Nd are systematically examined to clarify mechanisms of Nd recovery by y-PGA and its sodium salt（y-PGANa）. The recovery efficiency of Nd by y-PGA increases from 2.4 to 19.6% as pH increases from 2 to 4. Subsequently the Nd recovery efficiencies for y-PGA and y-PGANa remain almost constant in the range of pH from 4 to 7. For pH 〉 7 the increase in Nd recovery is significant and 100% recovery of Nd is achieved at pH 9. The pH dependency on Nd recovery by y-PGANa is similar to that by y-PGA. Contributions of adsorption and precipitation/coagulation to Nd recovery process are quantified. Whereas the adsorption dominates Nd recovery at lower pH（〈～4）, the precipitation/coagulation controls Nd recovery process for pH 〉 7. At higher pH, purple gel precipitates are observed. The maximum adsorption capacities for γ-PGA and yPGANa are 215 mg-Nd/（g-γ-PGA） at pH 4 and 305 mg-Nd/（g-y-PGANa） at pH 3, respectively. From the spectra of FT-IR and XPS, the biosorption of Nd onto y-PGA and y-PGANa via electrostatic interaction with carboxylate anions at pH 3 is verified. The Nd complexation with amide and carboxylate anion groups on γ-PGA and γ-PGANa may also contribute to the Nd recovery. The biosorption isotherms for Nd recovery by γ-PGA and γ-PGANa can be satisfactorily fitted by the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic studies suggest that the biosorptions of Nd by γ-PGA and γ-PGANa are endothermic. The utilization of γ-PGA and γ-PGANa as potential and eco-friendly biosorbents for the highly effective recovery of Nd from aqueous solution is confirmed.

Aberrant IL-17A expression together with reduced IL-2 production by effector CD4^(+)T cells contributes to the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).Here,we report that Sirtuin 2(SIRT2),a member of the family of NAD^(+)-dependent histone deacetylases,suppresses IL-2 production by CD4^(+)T cells while promoting their differentiation into Th17 ***,we show that SIRT2 is responsible for the deacetylation of p70S6K,activation of the mTORC1/HIF-1α/RORγt pathway and induction of Th17-cell ***,SIRT2 was shown to be responsible for the deacetylation of c-Jun and histones at the Il-2 gene,resulting in decreased IL-2 *** found that the transcription factor inducible cAMP early repressor(ICER),which is overexpressed in T cells from people with SLE and lupus-prone mice,bound directly to the Sirt2 promoter and promoted its ***-7,a SIRT2 inhibitor,limited the ability of adoptively transferred antigen-specific CD4^(+)T cells to cause autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice and limited disease in lupus-prone MRL/lpr ***,CD4^(+)T cells from SLE patients exhibited increased expression of SIRT2,and pharmacological inhibition of SIRT2 in primary CD4^(+)T cells from patients with SLE attenuated the ability of these cells to differentiate into Th17 cells and promoted the generation of IL-2–producing T ***,these results suggest that SIRT2-mediated deacetylation is essential in the aberrant expression of IL-17A and IL-2 and that SIRT2 may be a promising molecular target for new SLE therapies.

Nuclear chain reactions are, by now, commonly used in the nuclear reactors, and thus it seems that there is no basic problem in fission processes from the scientific point of view. However, the criticality accident that occurred in JCO in 1999 suggests that one should carefully examine this accident from the nuclear physics point of view. Indeed the chain nuclear reactions should have taken place in the small area of space with 45 cm diameter disk times 30 cm height tank. In fact, when people carry the uranium nitrate solution into sedimentation tank, then this solution with uranium should get into the critical state at the 45? of uranium nitrate solution. The root cause of the accident should not be very simple from the nuclear physics point, and it should be quite important to examine why the uranium nitrate solution with 45? could have become critical.

Non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) is the major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Recent advances in molecular biology have resulted in the clinical use of several molecularly targeted drugs, which usually exhibit cytostatic antitumor activity, to improve the survival of NSCLC patients. The epidermal growth factor receptortyrosine kinase inhibitors(EGFR-TKIs) gefitinib and erlotinib have been approved for the treatment of NSCLC, and several phase Ⅲ trials have demonstrated that sensitizing EGFR mutations are biomarkers for predicting a favorable clinical outcome of NSCLC patients treated with the EGFR-TKIs. The Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors is generally used to assess the therapeutic response to antitumor drugs based on the morphological changes in tumor size as evaluated by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. However, such assessment may not always reflect the treatment efficacy of cytostatic drugs, such as EGFR-TKIs. In this regard, functional imaging methods, including 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose measured by positron emission tomography(FDG-PET), are potentially beneficial. An increasing body of evidence indicates the usefulness of FDG-PETto predict treatment efficacy for NSCLC patients treated with EGFR-TKIs. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the potential role of FDG-PET in the clinical use of EGFR-TKIs for NSCLC.

Fusion Sign of Tendon-to-Bone Healing on X-Ray after Rotator Cuff Repair

Purpose: In clinical practice, increased radiolucency at the insertion site of a repaired tendon on the humerus on postoperative radiographs of patients following rotator cuff repair is often observed. Separately, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed tendon-to-bone healing in conjunction with this finding. Thus, we suspected that such radiographic changes are associated with tendon-to-bone healing, a phenomenon we labeled as the “fusion sign.” This study sought to investigate the diagnosis rate of the fusion sign in relation to tendon-to-bone healing after rotator cuff repair. Methods: Patients who underwent open rotator cuff repair (ORCR) or arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) at two centers from 2010 to 2018 and who underwent MRI more than 6 months postoperatively were included in this study. The presence of radiolucency of the humeral footprint on a radiograph (the fusion sign) was investigated and checked for the concurrent presence of tendon-to-bone healing on MRI. Results: In total, 187 shoulders after ARCR and 55 shoulders after ORCR were included in this study. Among these, SH repair was performed in 202 shoulders and suture-bridging repair was performed in 40 shoulders. The fusion sign was positive in 67.8% of cases and negative in 32.3%. The positive predictive value (PPV) of the total population was 0.963 and did not differ according to the suture method used, reported as 0.964 in ARCR, 0.962 in ORCR, 0.966 in the surface-holding technique, and 0.938 in the suture-bridging technique. Efficacy and Safety of Insulin Glulisine in Intensive Insulin Therapy: Bolus Insulin Adjust Nice Control by apiDRA Study (BANDRA Study)

Background: Treatment for postprandial glycemia using rapid-acting insulin analogues sometimes resulted in preprandial hypoglycemia or weight gain. Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of switching bolus insulin from insulin lispro (Lis) to insulin glulisine (Glu) in patients with inadequately controlled diabetes on intensive insulin therapy with Lis and glargine (Gla). Methods: Seventy-two outpatients with inadequate glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c] ≥7.0%, glycated albumin [GA] ≥20%) on intensive insulin therapy comprising Lis and Gla for ≥24 weeks were enrolled. We switched treatment from Lis to Glu with a stepwise increase in the dose by 1 unit per meal to obtain a GA level of ≤20% for 24 weeks, and the efficacy and safety were evaluated. Patients’ treatment satisfaction was also evaluated using the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (DTSQ) after the treatment. Results: After switching from Lis to Glu, both HbA1c and GA levels significantly lowered from 8.26% ± 0.13% to 7.71% ± 0.13% (P < 0.01) and from 23.9% ± 1.8% to 21.4% ± 1.9% (P < 0.01), respectively. Furthermore, switching from Lis to Glu improved patients’ treatment satisfaction;scores for 7 of the 8 items, such as “satisfaction” and “convenience” were significantly improved (P < 0.001), with no significant change in the scores for “improvement of hypoglycemia” (P = 0.91). Conclusions: Our present study suggests that switching bolus insulin from Lis to Glu by the addition of 1 unit of Glu per meal may be a useful treatment option for patients with inadequate glycemic control receiving intensive insulin therapy with Lis and Gla.
