nitric oxide(nO)is an essential reactive oxygen species and a signal molecule in *** several studies have proposed the occurrence of oxidative nO production,only reductive routes for nO production,such as the nitrate(nO_(3)^(-))-upper-reductase pathway,have been evidenced to date in land ***,plants grown axenically with ammonium as the sole source of nitrogen exhibit contents of nitrite and nO3−,evidencing the existence of a metabolic pathway for oxidative production of *** hypothesized that oximes,such as indole-3-acetaldoxime(IAOx),a precursor to indole-3-acetic acid,are intermediate oxidation products in nO *** detected the production of nO from IAOx and other oximes catalyzed by peroxidase(POD)enzyme using both 4-amino-5-methylamino-2′,7′-difluorescein fluorescence and *** stimulated the reaction,while superoxide dismutase inhibited ***,mouse nO synthase can also use IAOx to produce nO at a lower rate than *** provided a full mechanism for POD-dependent nO production from IAOx consistent with the experimental data and supported by density functional theory *** showed that the addition of IAOx to extracts from Medicago truncatula increased the in vitro production of nO,while in vivo supplementation of IAOx and other oximes increased the number of lateral roots,as shown for nO donors,and a more than 10-fold increase in IAOx dehydratase ***,we found that in vivo supplementation of IAOx increased nO production in Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type plants,while prx33-34 mutant plants,defective in POD33-34,had reduced *** data show that the release of nO by IAOx,as well as its auxinic effect,explain the superroot ***,our study reveals that plants produce nO utilizing diverse molecules such as oximes,POD,and flavins,which are widely distributed in the plant kingdom,thus introducing a long-awaited oxidative pathway to nO production in plants.T

Dopamine and its receptors have been widely studied in the neurological conditions and in the retina. In this study, we evaluated the possible role of dopamine in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD) by comparing the amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC), a surrogate index of retinal dopamin levels, in the vitreous sample of patients affected by RRD with those affected by macular pucker and vitre ous hemorrhage. Our results showed that significantly higher levels of DOPAC were found in the vitreou sample of patients affected by RRD compared with those affected by vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker(P = 0.002). Specifically, no trace of the substance was found in vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker samples. A slightly significant positive correlation was found among DOPAC and post-operativ best corrected visual acuity(r = 0.470, P = 0.049). no correlation was found between DOPAC and the day elapsed between diagnosis and surgery(P = 0.317). For the first time our findings suggest that DOPAC i released in RRD, but not in other retinal diseases such as vitreous hemorrhage and macular pucker. More over, we showed a correlation between visual acuity outcome and the amount of DOPAC in the vitreous This might have a potential, although still unknown, implication in the pathogenesis of the disease and/o in the associated photoreceptors loss. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Rome Tor Ver gata University Hospital(R.S.92.10) on September 24, 2010.

Factor analysis which studies correlation matrices is an effective means of data reduction whoseinference on the correlation matrix typically requires the number of random variables, p, to berelatively small and the sample size, n, to be approaching infinity. In contemporary data collection for biomedical studies, disease surveillance and genetics, p > n limits the use of existingfactor analysis methods to study the correlation matrix. The motivation for the research herecomes from studying the correlation matrix of log annual cancer mortality rate change for p = 59cancer types from 1969 to 2008 (n = 39) in the U.S.A. We formalise a test statistic to perform inference on the structure of the correlation matrix when p > n. We develop an approach based ongroup sequential theory to estimate the number of relevant factors to be extracted. To facilitateinterpretation of the extracted factors, we propose a BIC (Bayesian Information Criterion)-typecriterion to produce a sparse factor loading representation. The proposed methodology outperforms competing ad hoc methodologies in simulation analyses, and identifies three significant underlying factors responsible for the observed correlation between cancer mortality ratechanges.

Growing evidence has highlighted that angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE)-inhibitors(ACEi)/AT1 receptor blockers(ARBs)may influence the complex interplay between dopamine and the renin-angiotensin system in the nigrostriatal pathway,thus affecting the development of levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson’s disease(PD).In the present study,we analyzed whether the use of this class of medication was associated with a reduced occurrence of levodopa-induced dyskinesia,using electronically-stored information of idiopathic PD patients enrolled at novara University Hospital“Maggiore della Carità”.We conducted a retrospective case-control study identifying PD patients with dyskinesias(PwD;n=47)as *** each PwD we selected a non-dyskinetic control(noD),nearly perfectly matched according to sex,Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS)part III score,and duration of antiparkinsonian *** logistic regression was used to evaluate whether dyskinesias were associated with ACEi/ARBs ***-four PD patients were included,aged 72.18±9 years,with an average disease duration of 10.20±4.8 years and 9.04±4.9 years of antiparkinsonian *** mean UPDRS part III score was 18.87±7.6 and the median HY stage was *** the noD group,25(53.2%)were users and 22(46.8%)non-users of ACEi/***,in the PwD group,11(23.4%)were users and 36 non-users(76.6%)of this drug class(Pearson chi-square=8.824,P=0.003).Concerning general medication,there were no other statistically significant differences between *** controlling for tremor dominant phenotype,levodopa equivalent daily dose,HY 3-4,and disease duration,ACEi/ARBs use was a significant predictor of a lower occurrence of dyskinesia(OR=0.226,95%CI:0.080-0.636,P=0.005).Therefore,our study suggests that ACEi/ARBs may reduce levodopa-induced dyskinesia occurrence and,thanks to good tolerability and easy management,represent a feasible choice when dealing with the treatment of hypertension in PD patients.

Scatterhoarding rodents often place caches in the open where pilferage rates are reduced,suggesting that they tradeoff higher risks of predation for more secure cache *** tested this hypothesis in two study systems by measuring predation risks inferred from measures of giving-up densities(GUDs)at known cache sites and other sites for *** GUDs were measured with small trays containing 3 L of fine sand mixed with sunflower *** the first experiment,we relied on a 2-year seed dispersal study in a natural forest to identify caches of eastern gray squirrels(Sciurus carolinensis)and then measured GUDs at:(i)these caches;(ii)comparable points along logs and rocks where rodent activity was assumed highest;and(iii)a set of random *** found that GUDs and,presumably,predation risks,were higher at both cache and random points than those with *** the second site,we measured GUDs of eastern gray squirrels in an open park system and found that GUDs were consistently lowest at the base of the tree compared to more open sites,where previous studies show caching by squirrels to be highest and pilferage rates by naïve competitors to be *** results confirm that predation risks can influence scatterhoarding decisions but that they are also highly context dependent,and that the landscape of fear,now so well documented in the literature,could potentially shape the temporal and spatial patterns of seedling establishment and forest regeneration in systems where scatterhoarding is common.

Dielectric nanocavities are emerging as a versatile and powerful tool for the linear and nonlinear manipulation of light at the nanoscale. In this work, we exploit the effective coupling of electric and toroidal modes in AIGaAs nanodimers to locally enhance both electric and magnetic fields while minimizing the optical scattering, thereby optimizing their second-harmonic generation efficiency with respect to the case of a single isolated nanodisk. We also demonstrate that proper near-field coupling can provide fitrther degrees of freedom to control the polari- zation state and the radiation diagram of the second-harmonic field.
