We r.view the postulated thr.atening pr.cesses that may have affected the de- cline in the easter. population of the monar.h butter.ly, Danausplexippus L. （Lepidopter.： Nymphalidae）, in Nor.h Amer.ca. Although ther. ar. likely multiple contr.buting factor., such as climate and r.sour.e-r.lated effects on br.eding, migr.ting, and over.inter.ng populations, the key landscape-level change appear. to be associated with the widespr.ad use of genetically modified her.icide r.sistant cr.ps that have r.pidly come to dominate the extensive cor. summer.br.eding r.nge. We dismiss misinter.r.tations of the appar.nt lack of population change in summer.adult count data as logically flawed. Glyphosate-toler.nt soybean and maize have enabled the extensive use of this her.icide, gener.ting widespr.ad losses of milkweed （Asclepias spp.）, the only host plants for.monar.h lar.ae. Modeling studies that simulate lifetime r.alized fecundity at a landscape scale, dir.ct counts of milkweeds, and extensive citizen science data acr.ss the br.eding r.nge suggest that a her.icide-induced, landscape-level r.duction in milkweed has pr.cipitated the decline in monar.hs. A r.cover. will likely r.quir. a monumental effor. for.the r.-establishment of milkweed r.sour.es at a commensur.te landscape scale.
