Preliminary Study of Effects of Centrifugation of Stallion Semen on Motility and Pro-AKAP4 Concentration over 72 Hours Post-collection

The study aimed to investigate the effects of centrifugation of stallion semen on progressive sperm motility over a 72-hour period;and determine if the protein marker,precursor of A-kinase anchor protein 4(pro-AKAP4),may be maintained at a higher level over time when compared to non-centrifuged ***-AKAP4 has been studied for its function in stabilizing the structure of spermatozoa and its use as a marker for fertilizing capacity of *** collections were obtained from four fertile,commercially used Standardbred stallions collected three times *** samples were diluted to a final concentration of 50 million total cells per *** extended aliquot of semen from each collection was used for the non-centrifuged treatment,and one extended aliquot of semen was centrifuged at 750×g for 10 *** supernatant from the centrifuged sample was then removed with a 10 mL plastic transfer pipette,and the spermatozoa cell pellet was suspended in fresh extender to a final concentration of 50 million total cells per *** centrifuged and non-centrifuged samples from each collection were stored in Equine Express II stallion semen shipping containers for 72 h and fresh ice packs were added to each container every 24 *** progressive sperm motility and levels of pro-AKAP4 were determined at times 0,12,24,48 and 72 h after *** were found between stallions,times and treatments with the main finding being that pro-AKAP4 concentration in centrifuged samples was maintained at a much higher level over the 72-hour period studied.

Risk assessments quantify the probability of undesirable events along with their *** are used to prioritize management interventions and assess tradeoffs,serving as an essential component of ecosystem-based management(EBM).A central objective of most risk assessments for conservation and management is to characterize uncertainty and impacts associated with one or more pressures of *** assessments have been used in marine resource management to help evaluate the risk of environmental,ecological,and anthropogenic pressures on species or habitats including for data-poor fisheries management(e.g.,toxicity,probability of extinction,habitat alteration impacts).Traditionally,marine risk assessments focused on singular pressure-response relationships,but recent advancements have included use of risk assessments in an EBM context,providing a method for evaluating the cumulative impacts of multiple pressures on multiple ecosystem ***,we describe a conceptual framework for ecosystem risk assessment(ERA),highlighting its role in operationalizing EBM,with specific attention to ocean management *** framework builds on the ecotoxicological and conservation literature on risk assessment and includes recent advances that focus on risks posed by fishing to marine *** review how examples of ERAs from the United States fit into this framework,explore the variety of analytical approaches that have been used to conduct ERAs,and assess the challenges and data gaps that *** review discusses future prospects for ERAs as EBM decision-support tools,their expanded role in integrated ecosystem assessments,and the development of next-generation risk assessments for coupled natural-human systems.

Characterization of the first Wolbachia from the genus Scaptodrosophila,a male-killer from the rainforest species ***

The Scaptodrosophila genus represents a large group of drosophilids with a worldwide distribution and a predominance of species in Australia,but there is little information on the presence and impacts of Wolbachia endosymbionts in this *** we describe the first Wolbachia infection from this group,wClay isolated from Scaptodrosophila claytoni(van Klinken),a species from the east coast of *** infection is polymorphic in natural populations,occurring at a frequency of around 6%–10%.wClay causes male killing,producing female-biased lines;most lines showed 100%male killing,though in 1 line it was<80%.The lines need to be maintained through the introduction of males unless the infection is removed by tetracycline *** is transmitted at a high fidelity(98.6%)through the maternal lineage and has been stable in 2 laboratory lines across 24 generations,suggesting it is likely to persist in *** infection has not been previously described but is closely related to the male-killing Wolbachia recently described from Drosophila pandora based on multilocus sequence typing and the wsp ***-killing Wolbachia are likely to be common in drosophilids but remain difficult to detect because the infections can often be at a low frequency.

Origin of the Oligocene Tuolangla porphyry-skarn Cu-W-Mo deposit in Lhasa terrane,southern Tibet

Endonasal transsphenoidal removal of tuberculum sellae meningiomas: technical note(英文)

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas traditionally have been removed through a transcranial approach. More recently, the sublabial transsphenoidal approach has been used to remove such tumors. Here, we describe use of the direct endonasal transsphenoidal approach for removal of suprasellar meningiomas. METHODS: Three women, aged 32, 34, and 55 years, each sought treatment for visual loss and headaches. In each patient, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a suprasellar mass causing optic chiasmal and optic nerve compression (average size, 2cm x2 cm).
