Empirical assessment of adaptation to climate change impacts of mountain households:development and application of an Adaptation Capability Index

The present study proposes an index to assess the potential for adaptation to climate change for households in the mountainous regions. The index provides a realistic approach to recognize social and natural factors which contribute to successful adaptation and addresses several household functions, such as social networking, livelihood strategy, adjustment strategies, resource availability and accessibility. The proposed Adaptation Capability Index （ACI） is analytically defined, mathematically formulated and field tested on mountainous households in urban and semi-urban regions of the Uttarakhand Himalaya in India. To gather data on the topic relevant to the ACI, a household scale questionnaire was developed and administered to 12o heads of households through face-to-face interviews. The results highlight higher adaptive capability of urban households and low adaptation capacity of rural households due to poor farm productivity, low accessibility and availability of resources and technological input. Future programs and policies must include and implement regulations to remedy attributive factors responsible for higher adaptation. This paper may be applicable to other mountainous regions and may provide insights for effective adaptation strategies to climate change.

Spatial patterns and effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on hospitalization for chronic lung diseases in Beijing, China

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD), lung cancer(LC) and tuberculosis(TB) are common chronic lung diseases that generate a large disease burden and significant health care resource use in China. The aim of this study was to quantify spatial patterns and effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on hospitalization of COPD, LC and TB in Beijing. Daily counts of hospitalization for 2010 were obtained from the Beijing Urban Employees Basic medical Insurance(UEBmI) *** hierarchical Poisson regression models were applied to identify spatial patterns of hospitalization for COPD, LC and TB at the district level and explore associations with inhalable particulate matter(aerodynamic diameter m, Pm10), sulfur dioxide(SO2), nitrogen dioxide(NO2), mean temperature and relative humidity. There were 18,882, 14,295 and 2,940 counts of hospitalizations for COPD, LC and TB respectively, in Beijing in 2010. Clusters of high relative risk were in different locations for the three diseases. The effect of relative humidity on COPD hospitalization was most significant with a relative risk(RR) of 1.070(95%CI: 1.054, 1.086) per one percent increase. For lung cancer hospitalization, exposure to ambient SO2 was associated with a RR of 1.034(95%CI: 1.011, 1.058) per μg m–3 increase. For tuberculosis, the effect of mean temperature was significant with a RR of 1.107(95%CI: 1.038, 1.180) per °C increase. Risk factors and spatial patterns were different for hospitalization of non-infectious and infectious chronic lung disease in Beijing. Even over a short time period(one year), associations were apparent with air pollution and meteorological factors.

Side-chain cyclization enhancing molecular rigidity and π-πstacking yields as-cast binary organic solar cells with 19.1%efficiency

High-performance as-cast organic solar cells (OSCs) are rarely reported due to the challenges in achieving high-quality active layer morphology via a single-step process. Herein, four small molecule acceptors (SmAs) substituted with cyclic alkyl chains of varying carbon numbers were synthesized and utilized to fabricate highly efficient as-cast OSCs. The side-chain cyclization strategy significantly enhances molecular rigidity and strengthens intermolecular packing, particularly in Se-Cb, which exhibits an excellent three-dimensional (3D) stacking framework with aπ-πstacking distance as short as 3.34?. As the size of cyclic alkyl chain increases, the packing mode of SmA single crystals shift from 3D to 2D, accompanied by a greaterπ-πstacking distance due to increased steric hindrance. As-cast binary devices based on D18/Se-Cb achieved a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.1%with a fill factor (FF) exceeding 80%, and a certified value of 18.45%. Se-Cb forms a more uniform vertical phase separation morphology than the control SmA within the D18 matrix, enhancing carrier transport and significantly suppressing sub-nanosecond bimolecular recombination. This study systematically investigates the effects of cyclic alkyl chain substitution on the properties and photovoltaic performance of SmAs, identifying cyclobutyl as a promising candidate for efficient as-cast OSCs with high FF.

This paper provides a fresh perspective and new insights into nanoscale friction by investigating it through molecular dynamics(mD)simulation and atomic force microscope(AFm)nanoscratch *** work considered gallium arsenide,an importantⅢ-Ⅴdirect bandgap semiconductor material residing in the zincblende structure,as a reference sample material due to its growing usage in 5G communication *** the simulations,the scratch depth was tested as a variable in the fine range of 0.5-3 nm to understand the behavior of material removal and to gain insights into the nanoscale *** force,normal force,and average cutting forces were extracted from the simulation to obtain two scalar quantities,namely,the scratch cutting energy(defined as the work performed to remove a unit volume of material)and the kinetic coefficient of friction(defined as the force ratio).A strong size effect was observed for scratch depths below 2 nm from the mD simulations and about 15 nm from the AFm experiments.A strong quantitative corroboration was obtained between the specific scratch energy determined by the mD simulations and the AFm experiments,and more qualitative corroboration was derived for the pile-up and the kinetic coefficient of *** conclusion suggests that the specific scratch energy is insensitive to the tool geometry and the scratch speed used in this ***,the pile-up and kinetic coefficient of friction are dependent on the geometry of the tool tip.
