By using the rawinsonde data, upper cloud amount data and objective analysis data for global domain which all were produced by Numerical Prediction Division,JMA and by using daily and mean weather map issUed by JMA and daily rainfall data over the Huaihe River Basin from China,an observational study to the early summer seasonal change of large-scale circulation over East Asia and its relation to change of the frontal features and environment for the frontal rainfall has been carried *** reaults have been obtained:(1) The early summer seasonal change of large-scale circulation was occurred during 20-23 May 1991,which was about 10 days earlier than the *** the period the subtropical westerly jet and tropical easterlies abruptly moved northward;(2) The northward movement of the tropical easterlies was not uniform,it was earlier at 100 hpa level and about 24 hrs late at 200 hpa *** phenomenon was associated with earlier disappearence of the subtropical westerly jet at 100 hpa level;(3)During the seasonal change there were two westerly jets in the upper level and changed their intensity with the *** 18 May 1991,the southern one was more intense and then changed to more intense for the northern one and disappearence of the southern one,the phenomenon seemed to be appeared as northward movement of the southernjet;(4) A faster temperature(n rising in the upper level over the Tibetan Plateau was associated with the *** the T rising the T maximum moved onto the plateau,changing the T gradient from positive to negahve to the south flank of the plateau,the effect to leduce and disappear the southern *** the T rising was associated with change of the frontal features over East Asia;(5) The seasonal change type during 1991 was same as that during 1992 and 1993,but different from that during 1990;(6) The environment for the frontal rainfall was change in the season,the differences were in the baroclinity in upper level

AIM To investigate Japanese traditional(Kampo) medicine's effectiveness on cancer chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy(CIPN), we carried out this retrospective *** By searching our outpatient database of 3154 patients who consulted our outpatient clinic of Japanese-Oriental(Kampo) Medicine at Chiba University Hospital from November 2005 to December 2010, a total of 281 patients diagnosed with cancer were identified. Twentyfour patients out of the 281 patients identified met the following three conditions and were eligible for further investigation of the effectiveness of Kampo treatment: At least one course of cancer chemotherapy had been administered; numbness and pain appeared after the chemotherapy; and CIPN was diagnosed before they were given Kampo *** The 24 patients included 6 males and 18 females and ranged in age from 39 to 86(mean 61.2 ± 11.5) years old. Kampo formulas were individually chosen by Kampo expert doctors based on Kampo-specific diagnostics. Beneficial outcomes were obtained by Kampo treatment in 20 out of the 24 cases(83.3%). Nine out 20 cases had a major response(the numbness and pain showed improvement or reduction by 50% or more), with 7 of 9 cases showing a more than 70% symptom reduction. Eleven out of 20 cases showed a minor response(less than 50% symptom reduction), and 4 out of the 24 cases had no beneficial response. The most frequently used formula was goshajinkigan(GJG), followed by hachimijiogan(HJG) and keishibukuryogan. Thirteen of the 24 cases(54.2%) were prescribed aconite rootcontaining formulas including GJG and HJG. Aconite root has "warming" effects and ameliorates pain and numbness; 21 out of 24 cases(87.5%) in total used warming formulas such as aconite root-containing formulas to reduce *** Our current study suggested that Kampo formulas chosen based on Kampo-specific diagnostics could be for treating CIPN that is refractory to conventional medicine.

A nematode Caenorhabditis elegans(C. elegans) is a filter feeder, which draws a suspension of bacteria and separates bacteria from the solvent by using pharyngeal pumping motions and specific mouth parts. This mechanism has not been fully understood. We investigated the mechanism of filtering of bacteria in the pharynx of C. elegans by visualization by fluorescent particles and dyed E. coli. We succeeded in quantifying the selectivity of bacteria-sized particles by C. elegans. The most accumulated particles were those of 0.5 μm in diameter. The quantity of accumulated particles of 0.2 μm or 1.0 μm in diameter was about one third of that of particles of 0.5μm in diameter. The least accumulated particles were those of 0.05 μm in diameter. These results suggest that the pharyngeal structures of C. elegans would be suitable for eating bacteria because the size of bacteria ingested by C. elegans worms is about 0.5 μm in diameter. We also succeeded in visualizing pharyngeal structures and pumping motions and flow in the pharynx. We found that there were phase differences in the motions among procorpus, metacorpus and isthmus. This result suggests filtering would occur at the two tips of procorpus and isthmus by the phase differences. We found that bacteria-sized particles and bacteria were flowed and trapped in the channels, which existed along the central lumen from tip of procorpus to isthmus. From our results, we proposed the novel mechanism of filtering of bacteria through the channels for flowing and trapping. In future, this selective filtering mechanism of C. elegans would be applied to development of microfluidic filtration devices for medical and biological equipment.

We present stellar parameters and abundances of 15 elements （Na, Mg, A1, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Y and Ba） for 23 field RR Lyrae variables based on high-resolution （R ~ 60 000） and high signal-to-noise （S/N~ 200） spectra obtained using the High Dispersion Spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. Six stars in the sample have more than one spectrum observed at different pulsation phases. The derived abundance ratios of [X/Fe] for 14 elements （except for Ba） do not vary during the pulsation cycle. An interesting curve of [Ba/Fe] versus phase is detected for the first time and it shows decreasing [Ba/Fe] with increasing temperature at a given metallicity. Combining with data in the literature, abundances of most RR Lyrae stars as a function of [Fe/H] follow the same trends as those of dwarf stars, but [Sc/Fe] and [Y/Fe] ratios of RR Lyrae stars at solar metallicity are lower than those of dwarf stars. The kinematics of RR Lyrae stars indicate that three comparatively metal-rich RR Lyrae stars might originate from the thick disk and they show higher [a/Fe] ratios than RR Lyrae stars with thin disk kinematics. Among 23 RR Lyrae stars, two special objects are found with abnormal abundances; TV Lib has high [a/Fe], [Sc/Fe], [Y/Fe] and [Ba/Fe] ratios while TW Her has solar [a/Fe] but significantly lower [Sc/Fe], [Y/Fe] and [Ba/Fe] ratios as compared with other RR Lyrae stars.

AIM： To investigate the effect of polaprezinc on cellular damage induced by hydrogen peroxide （H202） in human colon CaCo2 cells. METHODS： CaCo2 cells were treated with polaprezinc （10-100 pmol/L） for 6 h. After polaprezinc treatment, the cells were incubated with H202 （20μmol/L） for 1 h. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Western blot analysis for heat shock protein （HSP） 27 and HSP72 in the cells was performed. Moreover, cells were pretreated with quercetin （200 μmol/L）, an inhibitor of HSP synthesis, 2 h before polaprezinc treatment, and cell viability and the expression of HSP27 and 72 were assessed in these cells. RESULTS： Polaprezinc significantly protected CaCo2 cells from cell damage induced by H2O2, and up-regulated the expressions of HSP27 and HSP72 in the cells （10, 30 and 100 pmol/L of polaprezinc; 35.0% ± 7.7%, 58.3% ± 14.6% and 64.2% ± 8.2%, respectively. P 〈 0.01 versus polaprezinc-nontreated cells; 6.0% ± 4.4%）. Quercetin inhibited the up-regulation of HSP27 and HSP72 by polaprezinc and diminished the protective effect of polaprezinc against H2O2-caused injury in the cells. CONCLUSION： Polaprezinc is a useful therapeutic agent for treatment of colitis and its effects depend on the function of cytoprotective HSP in colon.

Background Recent studies suggest potential roles of immune response in the pathophysiology of ***-seizure medications(ASMs)are known to have side effects of drug eruption caused by immune responses.A few reports in adults have demonstrated disappearance of seizures after an ASM drug eruption *** this paper,we described 2 cases of childhood absence epilepsy(CAE)who showed seizure disappearance after ethosuximide(ESM)drug eruption,suggesting the possibility that the epilepsy disappears due to immune responses to *** presentation Case 1 was an 8-year-old girl diagnosed with *** was treated with valproate acid(VPA)initially,and then ESM was administered as an additional *** epileptic seizure disappeared 4 days after initiation of ***,drug eruption appeared 1 week after the administration of *** after discontinuation of ESM administration,she maintains no seizure after the drug *** 2 was a 5-year-old boy diagnosed as *** was treated with VPA initially,and ESM was administered *** eruption appeared 1 month after the administration of *** after ESM was terminated,he maintained seizure freedom after the appearance of *** Epileptic seizures may have been suppressed due to the immune responses caused by ASM *** studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiologic effects of drug eruption on epilepsy through immune responses.

The small Rab GTPases are key regulators of membrane vesicle trafficking. Ovaries of Periplaneta americana （Linnaeus）（Blattodea： Blattidae） have small molecular weight GTP/ATP-binding proteins during early and late vitellogenic periods of oogenesis. However, the identification and characterization of the detected proteins have not been yet reported. Herein, we cloned a cDNA encoding Rab5 from the American cockroach, P. americana, ovaries （PamRab5）. It comprises 796 bp, encoding a protein of 213 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 23.5 kDa. PamRab5 exists as a single-copy gene in the P. americana genome, as revealed by Southern blot analysis. An approximate 2.6 kb ovarian mRNA was transcribed especially at high levels in the previtellogenic ovaries, detected by Northern blot analysis. The muscle and head tissues also showed high levels of PamRab5 transcript. PamRab5 protein was localized, via immunofluorescence labeling, to germline-derived cells of the oocytes, very early during oocyte differentiation. Immunoblotting detected a ~25 kDa signal as a membrane-associated form revealed after application of detergent in the extraction buffer, and 23 kDa as a cytosolic form consistent with the predicted molecular weight from amino acid sequence in different tissues including ovary, muscles and head. The PamRab5 during late vitellogenic periods is required to regulate the endocytotic machinery during oogenesis in this cockroach. This is the first report on Rab5 from a hemimetabolan, and presents an inaugural step in probing the molecular premises of insect oocyte endocytotic trafficking important for oogenesis and embryonic development.

Evaluating Obesity Index among Children with Developmental Disorders

The prevalence of obesity not only among adults but also among children has been increasing globally. Furthermore, obese children reportedly go on to be obese in adulthood. Obesity is likely to cause lifestyle-related diseases not only in able-bodied individuals but also in disabled children. Specific cognitive behavior observed in disabled children often hinders the provision of lifestyle guidance, such as nutritional and physical exercise instructions. To prevent such situations, early identification of obesity is required to improve lifestyle habits through diet and exercise in disabled children. This study included 285 children with developmental disorders. To assess a childhood obesity index, three obesity-related parameters were compared: the degree of obesity in school health, which has been used to evaluate the health of school children in Japan;abdominal circumference, which is useful for predicting visceral fat obesity;and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), which reflects visceral fat and physique. The abdominal circumference was significantly dependent on age. The degree of obesity and WHtR did not show a significant association with age. WHtR was significantly associated with the degree of obesity in school health. The WHtR is easily calculated as compared to the degree of index in school health which needs rather complicated calculations depending on age and age-specific coefficients. The study findings suggest that WHtR might be an easy-to-use obesity index comparable to the degree of obesity in school health in children with developmental disorders.
