Removal of PCDD/Fs and PCBs from sediment by oxygen free Pyrolysis

Few studies have dealt on the evaluation of volatilization and decomposition reactions of dioxins from sediment by oxygen free pyrolysis. In this study, the performance of pyrolysis on the removal of dioxins from sediment was investigated. Dioxin concentrations of the raw sediment and the solid residues after pyrolysis were analyzed at different conditions. Results showed a removal efficiency of 99.9999% for total dioxins at 800℃ and retention time of 30 min. All the polychlorinated dibenzo-furans （PCDFs） have been removed and were not formed in the solid residues at the retention time range of 30-90 min at 800℃. Close to 100% removal of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins （PCDDs） was also achieved. Only trace PCDDs were detected in the solid yields at a retention time of 60 min. The highest removal efficiency of polychlorinated biphenyls （PCBs） was more than 99.9994% at a retention time of 30 min. During cooling period following pyrolysis, however, the concentration of total dioxins in solid residues increased 130 times as compared to that of the raw sediment under air atmosphere. This confirmed that some complex reactions do occur to form PCDD/Fs and PCBs from 800 to 400℃ in the presence of oxygen. Oxygen-free atmosphere therefore can prevent formation of dioxin during thermal process thus generating clean solid residues.

The influence of intermixing heterogeneous regions that have different electrical properties from the base materials on van der Pauw measurement values was theoretically studied by computer simulation using the finite-element method. The measurement samples selected were thin films of inhomogeneous semiconductors. Calculated electrical properties, such as resistivity, carrier density, and mobility of the thin films, varied in predictable ways when heterogeneous regions were dispersed in wide ranges over the samples. On the other hand, the mobility of the thin films showed a different change when heterogeneous regions were locally concentrated in the measurement samples.

The ultrasonic wave velocities of Japanese cedar columns were measured using a non-contact method. An air-coupled ultrasonic wave was propagated through the axial and lateral directions of wood. The velocities in the axial direction (VL) showed the minimum values around the pith. The averaged VL increased from 3600 m/s towards the outside of measurement area and attained the maximum values (=4010 m/s). The velocities in the lateral direction (VRT ) showed no tendency among measurement points. The averaged VRT was 1450 m/s. The velocities obtained using the non-contact method showed a significant positive relationship with those obtained using the contact method. The averaged ratio of VL to VRT was measured to be approximately 2.2 to 2.8. These ratios were in agreement with those from a contact method. These findings suggest that it is possible to measure the velocity in Japanese cedar columns with the non-contact method by using air-coupled ultrasonics.

This study investigates the simultaneous production of hydrochar and bioactive compounds from Ulva lactuca via a hydrothermal *** experiment was carried out using a batch reaction vessel at different reaction temperatures of 180-220◦C and various holding times of 30-90 *** expected,both temperature and time vigorously influenced hydrochar and bioactive compound *** maximum hydrochar yield was at 32.4 wt%.The higher heating value(HHV)of hydrochar was observed in the range of 17.68-21.07 MJ kg^(-1),near the energy content of low-rank *** hydrochars exhibited contact angles higher than 90°(i.e.,94-108°)for a longer time,confirming their hydrophobic *** scanning electron microscope analysis(SEM)showed that the hydrothermal process enables cracks in the spherical shape of raw *** into small and porous *** producing hydrochar,the hydrothermal process of *** also gives promising antioxidants and phenolics as bioactive *** highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity could be achieved in hydrolysate at 200℃and 30 min with the value of 1.20±0.12 mg/g and 71.6±1.3%,respectively.

The negative thermal expansion(NTE) phenomenon is of great significance in fabricating zero thermal expansion(ZTE) materials to avoid thermal shock during heating and cooling. NTE is observed in limited groups of materials, e.g., metal cyanides, oxometallates, and metalorganic frameworks, but has not been reported in the family of metal hydrides. Herein, a colossal and continuous negative thermal expansion is firstly developed in the low-temperature phases of LT1-and LT2-Mg_(2)NiH_(4) between 488 K and 733 K from in-situ transmission electron microscope(TEM) video, with the volume contraction reaching 18.7% and 11.3%, respectively. The mechanisms for volume contraction of LT1 and LT2 phases are elucidated from the viewpoints of phase transformation, magnetic transition, and dehydrogenation, which is different from common NTE materials containing flexible polyhedra units in the structure. The linear volume shrinkage of LT2 in the temperature of 488-553 K corresponds to the phase transition of LT2→HT with a thermal expansion coefficient of -799.7 × 10^(-6) K^(-1) revealed by in-situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. The sudden volume contraction in LT1 between 488 and 493 K may be caused by the rapid dehydrogenation of LT1 to Mg_(2)Ni. The revealed phenomenon in single composite material with different structures would be significant for preparing zero thermal expansion materials by tuning the fraction of LT1 and LT2 phases.

Various ocean energy technologies have been developed that harness several kinds of renewable energy resources of the ocean. However, these technologies suffer from problems such as high construction and maintenance costs, restrictive installation requirements and damage by extraordinary weather conditions. In this paper, we propose a lightweight and FPGD （flexible power generation device） that overcomes these problems. The FPGD essentially consists of piezoelectric films and silicon rubber. Because the FPGD is small and flexible, it is anticipated to efficiently convert fluid energy into electrical energy even when the fluid energy is low. We perform several experiments to confirm the effectiveness of the FPGD and we discuss the results.
