We investigated the culm form for one of the largest bamboo species, Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex Houz. in relation to the me- chanical constraint principles, i.e., elastic, stress and geometric similarity. The fine-resolution analysis of the culm taper indicated that the culm for P. pubescens consisted of three or four segments with various forms, except for the butt swell. This implied that the taper of the whole culm for P. pubescens could be expressed by neither of these principles. The regression slope between culm height and diameter at breast height on the double logarithmic coordinates was 0.629, which was significantly different from the values predicted from these principles. In conclusion, none of these mechanical constraint principles can express the culm taper and height-diameter relationship, and there may be a need for a more complicated model to express the culm form for P. pubescens.

The chloroplast is surrounded by a double-membrane envelope at which proteins, ions, and numerous metabolites including nucleotides, amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates are exchanged between the two aqueous phases, the cytoplasm and the chloroplast stroma. The chloroplast envelope is also the location where the biosynthesis and accumulation of various lipids take place. By contrast to the inner membrane, which contains a number of specific transporters and acts as the permeability barrier, the chloroplast outer membrane has often been considered a passive compartment derived from the phagosomal membrane. However, the presence of galactoglycerolipids and β-barrel membrane proteins support the common origin of the outer membranes of the chloroplast envelope and extant cyanobacteria. Furthermore, recent progress in the field underlines that the chloroplast outer envelope plays important roles not only for translocation of various molecules, but also for regulation of metabolic activities and signaling processes. The chloroplast outer envelope membrane offers various interesting and challenging questions that are relevant to the understanding of organelle biogenesis, plant growth and development, and also membrane biology in general.

The objective of this study was to elucidate characteristics associated with rivers by classification of major rivers in Japan into several types based on riparian conditions. As the results of principal component analysis (PCA) with use of parameters reflecting forms and artificial alterations of respective rivers, four major components such as “comprehensive riparian size', “intactness of water front', “continuity of streams' and “simplicity of landform in river basin' were extracted. Subsequently, cluster analysis was performed based on principal component scores, leading to successful classification of major rivers into 6 types. These findings disclosed that (1) the extracted principal components provide effective viewpoint for classification of rivers; (2) distribution of respective classes indicates area properties; and (3) the employed quantitative procedures were found effective for classification of major rivers.

The pulse thermography(PT) technique was applied to the detection of the delamination of a multi-layered coating system composed of mullite/Si onto a reaction-bonded Si C substrate. The potential evaluation was carried out in order to detect internal delamination in multi-layered material system. Moreover, the observation of the cross sections and 3D views obtained by X-ray computed tomography(CT) indicated that the delamination occurred at the interface between the top coat and the bond coat layers. The changes in the temperature distribution obtained by PT indicated the existence of a delamination area in the top coat layer of the mullite. In particular, the lower temperature region corresponded to the delamination area. The experimental results confirmed that the PT technique is effective with respect to the internal delamination of multi-layered coating system.

The characteristics of the catchment discharge vary with land use. The characteristics of the long-term discharge of a terraced paddy field catchment were studied. Two kind of tank models for land use were proposed and used to simulate the discharge of the catchment: one is a forest type model used as the upper part of the catchment; the other is a paddy field type model used as the lower part of the catchment. The results of the model simulation were analyzed and compared with that of a forest catchment.

An important step in understanding molecular assembled systems is to examine the structure and physical properties at various length scales and clarify the correlation between them. However, while the structures of these systems have been extensively studied from nanoscopic to macroscopic scales, their viscoelastic properties have been often limited to bulk rheological measurements. By using optical tweezers and particle tracking, we here show the local viscoelastic properties and their spatial distributions for the following systems： worm-like micelle solution, supramolecular hydrogel and lyotropic liquid crystal, which are formed by self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules in water. We found that all systems studied possessed a spatial heterogeneity in their viscoelastic properties and this was originated from the heterogeneous structures. It is interesting to note that there is the heterogeneity with the characteristic length scale of sub-micrometer or micrometer scale, thereby structures, although the systems are formed by molecules with nanometer size. The findings of these studies should lead to a better understanding of the dynamics of such systems.

Robust Stability of Nonlinear Plants with a Non-symmetric Prandtl-Ishlinskii Hysteresis Model

In this paper, robust stability of nonlinear plants represented by non-symmetric Prandtl-Ishlinskii （PI） hysteresis model is studied. In general, PI hysteresis model is the weighted superposition of play or stop hysteresis operators, and the slopes of the operators are considered to be the same. In order to make a hysteresis model, a modified form of non-symmetric play hysteresis operator with unknown slopes is given. The hysteresis model is described by a generalized Lipschitz operator term and a bounded parasitic term. Since the generalized Lipschitz operator is unknown, a new condition using robust right coprime factorization is proposed to guarantee robust stability of the controlled plant with the hysteresis nonlinearity. As a result, based on the proposed robust condition, a stabilized plant is obtained. A numerical example is presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Smoke is unexpected powder-splashing caused by electrostatic force and is one of the main problems hindering the process stability and applicability of the powder bed fusion electron beam(PBF-EB)*** this study,mechanical stimulation was suggested to suppress smoke of gas-atomized(GA)Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powder using Al_(2)O_(3) and WC ball *** deformation mechanism of the GA powder depending on the ball milling media was discussed based on the developed particle morphology distribu-tion map and contact mechanics *** was revealed that the rapid decrement of flowability and packing density after WC ball milling owing to the formation of angular fragments by the brittle *** variation of surface and electrical properties by mechanical stimulation was investigated via XPS,TEM,and Impedance *** electrical resistivity of the ball-milled powders gradually decreased with increasing milling duration,despite the increased oxide film thickness,and the capacitive response disappeared in Al-60 and WC-30 via metal-insulator *** could be due to the accumulation of strain and defects on the oxide film via mechanical *** smoke mechanism of ball-milled powders was discussed based on the percolation *** the smoke experiment,smoke was more suppressed for WC-10 and WC-20 than that for Al-40 and Al-50,respectively,despite the longer charge dissipation *** could be due to the high probability of contact with conductive *** the Al-60 and WC-30 powders,smoke was further restricted by the formation of a percolation cluster with metal-like electrical *** believe that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the smoke mechanism and process optimization of the PBF-EB.
