Histological study of the structural layers around the esophagus in the lower mediastinum

BACKGROUND In Japan,the transhiatal approach,including lower mediastinal lymph node dissection,is widely performed for Siewert type II esophagogastric junction *** procedure is generally performed in a magnified view using laparoscopy or a robotic system,therefore,the microanatomy of the lower mediastinum is ***,mediastinal microanatomy is still unclear and classification of lower mediastinal lymph nodes is not currently based on fascia or other microanatomical *** To clarify the fascia and layer structures of the lower mediastinum and classify the lower mediastinal *** We dissected the esophagus and surrounding organs en-bloc from seven cadavers fixed in 10%*** and tissues were then cut at the level of the lower thoracic esophagus,embedded in paraffin,and serially *** sections were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin(all cadavers)and immunostained for the lymphatic endothelial marker D2-40(three cadavers).We observed the periesophageal fasciae and layers,and defined lymph node boundaries based on the *** vessels around the esophagus were observed on immunostained tissue *** We identified two fasciae,A and *** then classified lower mediastinal tissue into three areas,paraesophageal,paraaortic,and intermediate,using these fasciae as *** nodes were found to be present and were counted in each *** dorsal part of the intermediate area was thicker on the caudal side than on the cranial side in all *** the dorsal side,no blood vessels penetrated the fasciae in six of the seven cadavers,whereas the proper esophageal artery penetrated fascia B in one cadaver.D2-40 immunostaining showed lymphatic vessel connections between the paraesophageal and intermediate areas on the lateral and ventral sides of the esophagus,but no lymphatic connection between areas on the dorsal side of the *** Histological studies identified two fasciae surroun

Recently, many channelized rivers tend to be heavily vegetated due to regime shifts in hydrological, fluvial and ecological processes. Dense vegetation in a river frequently obstructs a flood flow and reduces conveyance capacity of channels. On the other hand, river vegetation provides various ecological services such as habitats for various species and life, natural cycle of organic and inorganic substances, etc.. It is of engineering importance to understand vegetation hydrodynamics in order to preserve vegetation nature and keep a certain level of flow conveyance capacity. In view that willows tend to be densely vegetated along the shoreline of floodplains or sandbars, a field measurement, a physical model experiment and a numerical analysis were carried out for investigating hydrodynamics in an open channel with riparian vegetation. Discussion was made focusing on flow and shear layer structures developed around the vegetation canopy.

Formation and Annealing of BaTiO_3 and SrTiO_3 Nanoparticles in KOH Solution

Barium titanate （BaTiO3） and strontium titanate （SrTiO3） nanoparticles were synthesized separately through hydrothermal reaction of crystalline TiO2 particles and corresponding alkaline earth hydroxides, Ba（OH）2 and St（OH）2 respectively, in 50 mol·dm^-3 KOH solution at 150℃. Each structural evolution of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 during the hydrothermal treatment was investigated by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, field emission scanning electron microscopy （FE-SEM）, field emission transmission electron microscopy （FE-TEM） and thermogravimetry- differential analysis （TG-DTA）. In the BaTiO3 system, round particles with cubic perovskite-type structure were obtained within 1 h. However, these particles were gradually dissolved and then were re-precipitated in the form of cube-shape BaTiO3 particles with a smaller lattice constant ac than that of the former phase. After the BaTiO3 particles formed firstly have disappeared completely, or the two phases coexistence stage with different lattice constant ac passed, lattice constant ac of BaTiO3 phase re-precipitated continuously decreased with annealing time. In contrast, once SrTiO3 particles are formed, the lattice constant ac decreased continuously throughout the reaction. The result indicates that SrTiO3 particles were annealed without dissolution and precipitation process under the present condition.

Influence of bile contamination for patients who undergo pancreaticoduodenectomy after biliary drainage

BACKGROUND The influence of bile contamination on the infectious complications of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy(PD)has not been thoroughly *** To evaluate the effect of preoperative biliary drainage and bile contamination on the outcomes of patients who undergo *** The database of 4101 patients who underwent PD was *** biliary drainage was performed in 1964 patients(47.9%),and bile contamination was confirmed in 606 patients(14.8%).RESULTS The incidence of postoperative infectious complications was 37.9%in patients with preoperative biliary drainage and 42.4%in patients with biliary contamination,*** with extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma,ampulla of Vater carcinoma,and pancreatic carcinoma had a high frequency of preoperative biliary drainage(82.9%,54.6%,and 50.8%)and bile contamination(34.3%,26.2%,and 20.2%).Bile contamination was associated with postoperative pancreatic fistula(POPF)Grade B/C,wound infection,and catheter infection.A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that biliary contamination(odds ratio 1.33,P=0.027)was the independent risk factor for POPF Grade B/*** three most commonly cultured microorganisms from bile(Enterococcus,Klebsiella,and Enterobacter)were identical to those isolated from organ *** In patients undergoing PD,bile contamination is related to postoperative infectious complication including POPF Grade B/*** management of biliary contamination should be standardised for patients who require preoperative biliary drainage for PD,as the main microorganisms are identical in both organ spaces and bile.

Strategies for early detection of resectable pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose at an early stage and generally has a poor prognosis. Surgical resection is the only potentially curative treatment for pancreatic carcinoma. To improve the prognosis of this disease, it is essential to detect tumors at early stages, when they are resectable. The optimal approach to screening for early pancreatic neoplasia has not been established. The International Cancer of the Pancreas Screening Consortium has recently finalized several recommendations regarding the management of patients who are at an increased risk of familial pancreatic cancer. In addition, there have been notable advances in research on serum markers, tissue markers, gene signatures, and genomic targets of pancreatic cancer. To date, however, no biomarkers have been established in the clinical setting. Advancements in imaging modalities touch all aspects of the clinical management of pancreatic diseases, including the early detection of pancreatic masses, their characterization, and evaluations of tumor resectability. This article reviews strategies for screening high-risk groups, biomarkers, and current advances in imaging modalities for the early detection of resectable pancreatic cancer.

A New Acylated Anthocyanin from the Red Flowers of Camellia hongkongensis and Characterization of Anthocyanins in the Section Camellia Species

Twelve anthocyanins （1-12） were isolated from the red flowers of Camellia hongkongensis Seem. by chromatography using open columns. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses, that is, proton-nuclear magnetic resonance, carbon 13-nuclear magnetic resonance, heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation, heteronuclear multiple bond correlation, high resolution electrospray ionization mass and ultraviolet visible spectroscopies. Out of these anthocyanins, a novel acylated anthocyanin, cyanidin 3-O-（6-O-（Z）-p-coumaroyl）-β-galactopyranoside （6）, two known acylated anthocyanins, cyanidin 3-O-（6-O-（E）-p-coumaroyl）-β-galactopyranoside （7） and cyanidin 3-O-（6-O-（E）-caffeoyl）-^- galactopyranoside （8）, and three known delphinidin glycosides （10-12） were for the first time isolated from the genus Camellia. Furthermore, pigment components in C. japonica L., C. chekiangoleosa Hu and C. semiserrata Chi were studied. The results indicated that the distribution of anthocyanins was differed among these species. Delphinidin glycoside was only detected in the flowers of C. hongkongensis, which is a special and important species in the section Camellia. Based on the characterization of anthocyanins in the section Camellia species, there is a close relationship among these species, and C. hongkongensis might be an important parent for creating new cultivars with bluish flower color.

Reductive Conversion of Biomass-Derived Furancarboxylic Acids with Retention of Carboxylic Acid Moiety

Catalytic reduction systems of 2-furancarboxylic acid(FCA)and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA)with H 2 without reduction of the carboxyl groups are *** and FDCA are produced from furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural which are important platform chemicals in biomass *** ring hydrogenation to tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid(THFCA)and tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dicarboxylic acid(THFDCA)easily proceeds over Pd *** of one C–O bond in the furan ring produces 5-hydroxyvaleric acid(5-HVA)and 2-hydroxyadipic acid.2-Hydroxyvaleric acid is not produced in the reported systems.5-HVA can be produced as the lactone form(δ-valerolactone;DVL)or as the esters depending on the *** reactions proceed over Pt catalysts with good yields(~70%)at optimized *** of two C–O bonds in the furan ring produces valeric acid and adipic acid,the latter of which is a very important chemical in industry and its production from biomass is of high *** acid from FDCA can be produced directly over Pt-MoO_(x) catalyst,indirectly via hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation as one-pot reaction using the combination of Pt and acid catalysts such as Pt/niobium oxide,or indirectly via two-step reaction composed of hydrogenation catalyzed by Pd and hydrodeoxygenation catalyzed by iodide ion in acidic *** the two-step method can give good yield of adipic acid at present.
