This paper explores quasi-static flexural properties and fracture behavior of a pultruded glass fiber/unsaturated polyester square pipe for automotive structural applications. Three-point flexural testing is performed in an Instron Universal Testing Machine with steel jigs supporting the top and bottom surfaces of the pipe. Acoustic emission (AE) measurements are recorded during flexural testing to evaluate initial fracture in the pipe structure. After final fracture, five cross-sections of the pipe are cut at 50-mm intervals along the longitudinal axis, with the first cut located at the mid-span of the pipe. Cross-sections of a pipe from an interrupted test where initial fracture is detected from the AE method are also prepared. Damage locations and behavior on each cross-section are observed. The flexural testing results show that the cumulative AE counts increase rapidly from 2.5 kN, that final failure occurs at a maximum load of approximately 13 kN, and that corresponding initial and final failure occurs in the two corner regions on the compressive side of flexural loading. Failure initiates by stress concentrations due to the upper jig on the top surface during bending. The cross-sectional observations also reveal clear deformation behavior of the pipe where failure is present, marked by inward bending of the top surface and upper corners located on the compressive side, near the jig. The locations of maximum stresses and deformations obtained from finite element analysis of this pipe structure are in very good agreement with the experimental observations.

Ovarian carcinosarcoma composed of high-grade carcinoma and sarcoma is an extremely rare neoplasm and typically occurs in postmenopausal women aged over 60 years. A 73-year-old female, gravida three para three, presented to our hospital with right lower abdominal pain. Right pelvic solid tumor with ascites was detected on pelvic ultrasound examination. She underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and partial omentectomy, but the tumor had invaded to the right ureter, and some fragile tumor could not be taken (sub-optimal surgery). On the imprint and ascitic cytology specimens during operation, atypical cells suggestive of adenocarcinoma and spindle atypical cells with immunocytochemically vimentin positive were found. The resected tumor was histopathologically carcinosarcoma consisted of serous adenocarcinoma, chondrosarcoma and fibrosarcoma. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that adenocarcinoma cells were positive for AE1/AE3 and fibrosarcoma cells stained with vimentin. The final diagnosis was the right ovarian carcinosarcoma (stage pT3CNxMx). Microsatellite instability was stable and BRCA1/2 mutations could not be found in the carcinosarcoma cells. The patient was given four cycles of chemotherapy with paclitaxel, carboplatin and bevacizumab regimen, and thereafter she was treated with the ifosfamide and cisplatin because of slight elevation of serum CA125.

A Case of Serous Tubal Intraepithelial Carcinoma Diagnosed by Cytology during the Operation

We experienced a case of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), which is the earliest morphologically recognizable precursor of pelvic high grade serous carcinoma, diagnosed by cytology during the operation. A 48-year-old Japanese woman visited to our department because of abnormal cytological result and the left adnexal mass on female cancer screening. Pre-operatively, she was diagnosed as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 3, adenomyosis, and the left adnexal cystic lesion with papillary growth. At laparotomy, the left adnexal tumor turned out to be cystic fallopian tube with small papillary growth on the inner surface, but abnormal findings were not present on bilateral ovaries. The cytology of the imprint smears from the papillary projection and ascitic fluid showed positive, suggesting serous adenocarcinoma. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed the left fallopian tube lesion was STIC with immunohistochemically positive reactivity against p53. No metastases including disseminated lesions were noted. The patient received four courses of systemic chemotherapy, and had no recurrent signs 10 months after the operation.

Nanographene materials have attracted much attention as their unique structures,interesting properties,and promising device ***,we established a high-speed synthesis technique of nanographene employing alcohols and in-liquid plasma,and confirm high crystallinity of synthesized *** this study,growth processes and mechanisms of nanographenes are *** this method,one Ni electrode was immersed into an ethanol,and the other was fixed above the ethanol level at gaseous Ar *** a 9 kV and 60 Hz ac-power to these electrodes,the in-liquid plasma was *** the plasma discharge for 20 minutes,it was found that black-colored nanographenes with a size of microns were dispersed in the *** black substances and yellow-colored extraction liquid were separated by *** sharp G-band peaks at 1581 cm-1 in Raman spectra and the interlayer spacing（3.33 A） between graphite basal planes observed in the transmission electron microscopy（TEM） images revealed the high-crystallinity of synthesized *** the crystallographic properties were not significantly changed owing to the kinds of alcohols and electrode *** the other hand,according to the liquid chromatography analysis,various types of aromatic hydrocarbons were generated in the *** results indicate that the in-liquid plasma discharge induce the dissolution of alcoholic molecules and generation of aromatic hydrocarbons as elementary steps of nanographene ***,the polymerization of the aromatic hydrocarbons results in the nanographene *** results will open the way to further development of high-speed synthesis and precise control of crystallographic properties.

Physiological changes in the photosynthesis, respiration and cell division of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a freshwater green alga, in response to adenine nucleotides were investigated. In advance of this investigation, two adenine nucleotides, di(2'-O-methyl)-cyclic bis(3'-5')diadenylic acid (1) and its N-benzoyl-protected analog 2 were synthesized from the commercially available adenosine phosphoramidite. The respective analogs significantly promoted the cell division (cell number) of C. reinhardtii strains 137c mt+ and BR mt+. Moreover, they significantly enhanced the O2 evolution (photosynthesis) and O2 uptake (respiration) of both strains. c-di-AMP analogs seem to play an effective role as a physiological activator in planta.

Synchrotron Refraction Enhanced Tomography of an Intact Common Marmoset (<i>Callithrix jacchus</i>)

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small new world monkey species, has been widely used in various scientific fields. It is necessary to understand connections between specific genotypes, their structure, and function;however, an anatomical atlas of the entire body of the common marmoset has not yet been reported. In addition to conventional absorption, refraction enhanced computed tomography (CT) based on synchrotron radiation can increase the contrast of boundaries between small absorption differences. In this study, to examine the potential of creating an anatomical atlas of the whole body of the common marmoset non-invasively, we visualized an intact marmoset using synchrotron refraction enhanced CT. The cryogenic marmoset was scanned using the medical imaging beamline at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation research facility in JAPAN. The trabecular structure, articular cartilage, cruciate ligament in the knee joint, and small airways (diameter: > 400 μm) was clearly identified with 50 μm voxel size and 37 keV x-ray energy. The structure of the heart and branching vessels in the kidneys and liver were also identified without contrast agents, and the anatomical structure of the brain was slightly visible. These results show that synchrotron refraction enhanced CT is useful for creating an anatomical atlas non-invasively, and further studies are planned that will combine refraction enhanced CT and other imaging techniques to analyse the morphology and create a complete atlas of the whole body of the common marmoset.

Primary Serous Cystadenocarcinoma of Broad Ligament: A Case Report with Laparoscopic, Histopathologic and Immunohistochemical Findings

An 86-year-old Japanese woman underwent an examining laparoscopy for removing the huge pelvic tumor. At laparoscope examination, the cystic tumor was found within the left broad ligament, while the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus showed almost normal appearance. The tumor was removed together by total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomies after the suction of serous content in the broad ligament. Cytological findings of the ascites suggested serous carcinoma. The resected ovaries and fallopian tubes were grossly and histologically normal. Histological examination of the solid part of broad ligament tumor, closely next to the fallopian tube, revealed a serous adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were strongly positive for CK7, WT-1, estrogen receptor, AE1/AE3 and EMA, and negative for CK20, D2-40 and calretinin. Also, they were negative for progesterone receptor and p53. The authors diagnosed the primary tumor as being a serous cystadenocarcinoma of the broad ligament [pTIC3NxM0, as modified and adapted to post-surgical staging of ovarian cancer (FIGO 2014)]. The patient has been receiving 6 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapies with one course with paclitaxel (PTX) and carboplatin (CBDCA) and five with PTX, CBDCA and Bevacizumab, and has no signs of recurrence and metastasis six months after the operation.
