Hydrogen has been recently attracted much attention with respect to high energy-conversion efficiency and low environmental burden. However, hydrogen gas is dangerous due to an explosive gas and a fast combustion rate. Therefore, the development of hydrogen sensor with high accuracy and reliability that can detect hydrogen easily is required. Especially, a flexible hydrogen sensor is useful because it has a high degree of freedom with respect to the shape of location in which the sensor is to be located. A flexible hydrogen sensor—namely, a WO3 thin film formed on a PET film by the sol-gel method using photo irradiation—based on gasochromism of WO3 was developed. By irradiating a thin film, which was prepared by using WO3 precursor solution synthesized by the sol-gel method, with ultraviolet rays, a high-purity WO3 film could be prepared on PET at low temperature. The sensor was structured as a polystyrene (PS) film containing palladium (Pd) laminated on a WO3 film. The WO3 layer was porous, so the PS containing Pd atoms solution penetrated the WO3 layer. WO3 reacted with hydrogen gas and instantly turned blue as the transmittance of the WO3 layer changed. The sensor showed high reactivity even for hydrogen concentration below 4% (1%, 0.5%, 0.25%, and 0.1%), which was the lower limit of hydrogen ignition, and a linear relationship between hydrogen concentration and change in transmittance was found. Moreover, the resistance of the WO3 film significantly and instantaneously changed due to hydrogen-gas exposure, and the hydrogen concentration and resistance change showed a linear relationship. It is therefore possible to quantitatively detect low concentrations of hydrogen by using changes in transmittance and resistance as indices. Since these changes occur selectively under hydrogen at room temperature and normal pressure, they form the basis of a highly sensitive hydrogen sensor. AIM To analyse the long-term prognostic impact of circulating tumour cells(CTCs) in gastric cancer patients who underwent surgery. METHODS A 7.5-m L peripheral vein blood sample was obtained from each patient with treatment-negative gastric adenocarcinoma before surgery. OBP-401, a telomerasespecific, replication-selective, oncolytic adenoviral agent carrying the green fluorescent protein gene, was used to label CTCs. Correlations between the number of CTCs and clinical end points were evaluated. RESULTS The median follow-up period of the surviving patients with gastric cancer was 60 mo. The CTC number tended to increase concomitantly with disease progression. The overall survival of patients with more than five CTCs in 7.5-m L of peripheral blood was lower than that of patients with five or less CTCs, although the difference was not significant(P = 0.183). A significant difference in relapse-free survival was found between patients with more than five and those with five or less CTCs(P = 0.034).CONCLUSION A lower number of CTCs was correlated with higher relapse-free survival rates in patients. Detection of CTCs using OBP-401 may be useful for predicting prognosis in gastric cancer.

Coaxial boron nitride nanotubes as interfacial dielectric layers to lower interface trap density in carbon nanotube transistors

Fermentative hydrogen production from synthetic food wastes was studied by using a mesophilic bacterium at batch cultivation. This bacterium could produce H from starch directly. Since there is much of rice in food wastes, we firstly investigated the characteristics of hydrogen production from starch by this mesophilic bacterium. To determine optimal temperature, hydrogen production was examined at 32℃, 37℃, 41℃, 45℃and 50℃in the culture liquid with 10g of starch per 1L culture. The bacterium produced more than 2L-H from 10g of starch at 37℃and pH6.0. Synthetic food wastes was made with cooked rice, frozen vegetables and entrails of fishes. From 150g of the synthetic food wastes in wet weight, it produced approximately 8L-H at 37℃and pH6.0.

Myofiber Permeability and Force Production of Rat Muscles Following Eccentric Contractions: The Repeated Bout Effect Depends on the Interval

Past eccentric contraction (ECC)-induced muscle injury reduces the severity of symptoms of subsequent muscle injury;this phenomenon is known as a repeated bout effect (RBE). It has been reported that increases in the duration of the interval between the first and second bouts are linked to weakening of the RBE. However, the histology following the attenuation of the RBE remains unclear. We examined the sustained effects of the second bout with regard to myofiber permeability and muscle force. Sixty-four male rats were randomly assigned to eight groups that varied in the number of exercise sessions and the duration of the interval between the first and second bouts: the non-ECC (Control);the single-injury (Post 1st bout);groups that were allowed to recover for 1, 2, and 4 weeks after a single injury (Pre 2nd bout_1w, Pre 2nd bout_2w, and Pre 2nd bout_4w);and groups that were subjected to second injuries 1, 2, and 4 weeks after the first (Post 2nd bout_1w, Post 2nd bout_2w, and Post 2nd bout_4w). The tibialis anterior was electrically stimulated in each ECC group. Twenty-four hours before muscle sampling, Evans blue dye (EBD) (a marker of myofiber damage) was administered. The maximal isometric contraction tension was measured immediately before sampling. The number of EBD-positive (+) fibers was determined via histological analysis. An RBE was revealed by functional examination at the 1- and 2-week and histological examination at the 1-, 2-, and 4-week time points (P < 0.05). In terms of myofiber permeability, prolongation of the interval before the second bout weakened this effect (P < 0.05). Experiments with 1-, 2-, and 4-week intervals indicated that prolongation of the interval before the second bout weakened the RBE with regard to myofiber permeability.

Adult T-cell leukemia( ATL) is a mature T-cell malignancy caused by human T-cell leukemia virus type I infection, and 10%-25% of patients show central nervous system( CNS) involvement. CNS involvement significantly reduces survival and there are no effective treatments for CNS involvement. Therefore, an appropriate animal model is required to evaluate the inhibitory effects of novel drugs on the progression of ATL with CNS involvement. Here, we established a mouse model of ATL with CNS involvement using ***-Prkdc~ (scid) Il2 rg ^(tm1Wjl)/SzJ mice inoculated with ATL cells intramuscularly in the postauricular region, and these mice showed paraparesis. Of the 10 mice inoculated with ATL cells intramuscularly(I.M.) at 5 weeks of age, 8(80%) showed paraparesis, whereas none of the 10 mice inoculated with ATL cells subcutaneously(S.C.) showed paraparesis. In the I.M. group, PCR detected HTLV-1-specific genes in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae; however, in the S.C. group, the vertebrae were negative for HTLV-1 genes. Histological analysis revealed a particularly high incidence of tumors, characterized by accumulation of the injected cells, in the thoracic vertebrae of mice in the I.M. group. Tumor cell infiltration was relatively high in the bone marrow. Spinal cord compression caused by invasion of the tumor mass outside the pia mater was observed in the thoracic vertebrae of the spinal cord. In conclusion, we have reported a mouse model of tumor growth with paraparesis that may be used to assess novel therapeutic agents for ATL with CNS involvement.

Nowadays, drones have been highly paid attention to applications in many fields, such as air transport of goods, information gathering when a disaster occurred, aerial photographing, pesticide spraying, and so on. However, since a conventional drone is difficult to maintain a stable flight in the vicinity of buildings, the application to special proximity inspections such as wall surface and bridge surface is restricted. Also, all of the rotors in conventional drones are fixed to the airframe, so that any attitude change of the aircraft occurs when it flies all around. Therefore, we propose a multifunctional aerial robot with tilted coaxial rotors, which can keep the airframe so as not to be tilted in flying mode, and is also capable of traveling omnidirectionally both on the ground and wall so as to be applied to a special vicinity inspection, where the robot has four passive casters and two-tilted coaxial rotors.

An omnidirectional mobile platform with any active dual-wheel caster assemblies can use general pneumatic tires, so that they are easy to be applied to powered wheelchairs. However, it needs to consider running on public roads in the applications of powered wheelchairs, and it is also essential to improve the running ability that can get over the level difference on the way of running on public roads. This study is aimed at developing an omnidirectional mobile platform with active dual-wheel caster assemblies in consideration of the run in a public road. In this paper, an omnidirectional mobile platform with a rocker-bogie suspension system is developed to improve the running ability, and the usefulness of the constructed platform is demonstrated by conducting various running experiments.

We examined the antitumor efficacy of the capecitabine (CAPE) plus cyclophosphamide (CPA) combination as a 2nd-line therapy after paclitaxel (PTX) plus bevacizumab (BEV) treatment in a xenograft model of human triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell line, MX-1. After tumor growth was confirmed, PTX (20 mg/kg;i.v.) + BEV (5 mg/kg;i.p.) treatment was started (Day 1). Each agent was administered once a week for 5 weeks and tumor regression was observed for at least the first 3 weeks. For 2nd-line treatment, we selected mice in which the tumor volume had increased from day 29 to day 36 and was within 130 - 250 mm3 on day 36. After randomization of mice selected on day 36, CPA (10 mg/kg;p.o.) and CAPE (539 mg/kg;p.o.) were administered daily for 14 days (days 36 - 49), followed by cessation of the drugs for 1 week. The tumor growth on day 57 was significantly suppressed in the CPA, CAPE and CAPE + CPA groups as compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the antitumor activity on day 57 of CAPE + CPA was significantly stronger than that of CPA or CAPE alone (p < 0.05). The thymidine phosphorylase (TP) level in tumor tissue was evaluated by immunohistochemistry on day 50, and was significantly higher in the CPA group than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Upregulation of TP in tumor tissues by CPA treatment would increase the 5-FU level in tumor tissues treated with CAPE. This would explain the possible mechanism that made CAPE + CPA superior to CAPE alone in the 2nd-line treatment. Our preclinical results suggest that the CAPE + CPA combination therapy may be effective as 2nd-line therapy after disease progression in PTX + BEV 1st-line treatment for TNBC patients.
