Recent progress on multifunctional electromagnetic interference shielding polymer composites

The explosive development of electronic devices and wireless communication technology gives rise to the issue of electromagnetic pollution,known as electromagnetic interference(EMI).The accumulation of undesirable electromagnetic radiation in space disturbs the normal function of unshielded electronic appliances and poses seriously threat to human health.Thus,the development of EMI shielding materials have emerged to solve the grim problem.Considering the complex application contexts,EMI shielding materials have evolved from traditional single-function to multi-functions to meet the ever-increasing application requirements in recent few years.This paper provides detailed insight into the current re-search status and future challenges in the advancement of polymer-based EMI shielding materials with various functions.First,the basic theory of EMI shielding,factors influencing results and the dominating characterization technologies for EMI shielding properties are summarized.Then,the comprehensive descriptions of the seven types of multifunctional EMI shields are provided with respect to their structures,fabrication methods and specific functions.Meanwhile,the corresponding critical scientific and technical issues are proposed.Based on our comprehensive analysis,the main challenges in the development of multifunctional EMI shielding materials are presented.This review aims to provide some guidance and inspire more efforts toward functional EMI shielding material research to satisfy the growing requirements for next-generation electronic systems.

Deep learning based wavefront sensor for complex wavefront detection in adaptive optical microscopes

The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor(SHWS)is an essential tool for wavefront sensing in adaptive optical microscopes.However,the distorted spots induced by the complex wavefront challenge its detection performance.Here,we propose a deep learning based wavefront detection method which combines point spread function image based Zernike coefficient estimation and wavefront stitching.Rather than using the centroid displacements of each micro-lens,this method first estimates the Zernike coefficients of local wavefront distribution over each micro-lens and then stitches the local wavefronts for reconstruction.The proposed method can offer low root mean square wavefront errors and high accuracy for complex wavefront detection,and has potential to be applied in adaptive optical microscopes.

Research on a MEMS pyrotechnic with a double-layer barrier safety and arming device

As an essential component of ammunition, pyrotechnics can control ignition with high reliability.However, due to limits of fabrication technology, traditional pyrotechnics are bulky. To achieve both functionality and miniaturization, MEMS pyrotechnics integrate initiator, safety-and-arming(S&A) device and lead charge and keep all components within a small size. MEMS S&A devices, as the core component to ensure system safety, are difficult to achieve active and rapid response to control signals with high safety and reliability. In order to overcome the difficulty, we propose the design and characterization of a MEMS pyrotechnic with a double-layer barrier S&A device. The MEMS pyrotechnic is a high-integrated device with an overall size of 13.4 × 8.5 × 5.2 mm^(3). The initiator is a Ni Cr bridge foil covered with an Al/Cu O energetic film, which can generate flame when ignited by an excitation voltage.To match the flame energy, lead styphnate is chosen in this study as the lead charge. The S&A device contains four semi-circular barriers, which are directly driven by V-shape electro-thermal actuators to gain active control of the pyrotechnics’ ignition condition with rapid response. To improve the system’s reliability, the four barriers are axisymmetrically placed in two layers, two barriers for each layer, to constitute a double-layer structure with a thickness of 100 μm. The ignition test results show that the S&A device can prevent the initiator from detonating the lead charge in safety condition. In arming condition, the lead charge will be detonated.

Efficient extraction of U(VI)ions from solutions

The rapid development of advanced techniques for selective and efficient U(Ⅵ) extraction from aqueous solutions is essential for addressing U(Ⅵ) environmental pollution and energy issues. Here, we share recent progress in U(Ⅵ) extraction from aqueous solutions, especially the most frequently applied techniques such as adsorption, catalysis(photocatalysis, piezocatalysis, and electrocatalysis), chemical deposition, and reduction by zero-valent metal particles. We attempt to elucidate the strategies and various mechanisms that contribute to the enhancement of selective U(Ⅵ) extraction. At the end of our review, we highlight the outlook, challenges, and prospects for the development of this field.

Hydrodynamic Characteristics of the Biplane-Type Otter Board with the Canvas Through Flume−Tank Experiment

Hydrodynamic characteristics of a biplane-type otter board,equipped with nylon canvas of 2 mm in thickness was investigated through flume-tank experiment in this study.A series of predesigned structures with different gap-chord ratios G/c(0.75,0.90,1.05),stagger anglesθ(30°,45°,60°),and proportions of flexible area relative to the whole wing areaƒr(0,55%,65%,75%),at an aspect ratio of 2.0 and a camber ratio of 15%,were experimentally carried out.The results showed the solution referring to the usage of flexible canvas replacing part of rigid structure for the biplane-type otter board was efficient for the trawling in the middle or shallow water area.The improvement of lift and stability for the biplane-type otter board was concluded,and drag of the structure was reduced by 1.9%atƒr=55%.In addition,the coefficient of variation of the lift and drag coefficient at different current velocities were 2.69%and 2.28%,respectively,which was smaller than those at relatively large proportion of the flexible area.Compared with the other tested structures,the frame-type flexible structure with the gap-chord ratio of 0.9 and a stagger angle of 45°and the proportion of the flexible area of 55%,performed best,and its drag was reduced by 5.72%and lift increased by 4.8%,compared with the rigid biplane-type otter board at the angles of attack from 18°to 28°.

Simplifying the detection of optical distortions by machine learning

Adaptive optics has been widely used in biological science to recover high-resolution optical image deep into the tissue,where optical distortion detection with high speed and accuracy is strongly required.Here,we introduce convolutional neural networks,one of the most popular machine learning models,into Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor(SHWS)to simplify optical distortion detection processes.Without image segmentation or centroid positioning algorithm,the trained network could estimate up to 36th Zernike mode coefficients directly from a full SHWS image within 1.227ms on a personal computer,and achieves prediction accuracy up to 97.4%.The simulation results show that the average root mean squared error in phase residuals of our method is 75.64%lower than that with the modal-based SHWS method.With the high detection accuracy and simplified detection processes,this work has the potential to be applied in wavefront sensor-based adaptive optics for in vivo deep tissue imaging.

UV-triggered Polymerization of Polyelectrolyte Composite Coating with Pore Formation and Lubricant Infusion

Porous coatings with the features of muti-interfaces and high specific surface area have emerged as an excellent material platform for the manipulation of porous structures.Layer-by-layer(Lb L)assembly technique has been widely used in preparing porous polyelectrolyte coatings.However,the efficient construction of stable film from the Lb L technique is still a question.Herein,we reported a new solution to construct a stabilized polyelectrolyte coating with porous structures.Inspired by the mechanical reinforcement of double-network hydrogel,we constructed the poly(ethylenimine)(PEI)/poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)coating by in situ photopolymerization of acrylic acid in the PEI network instead of assembling PEI and PAA.Compared with the Lb L films,the in situ polymerized coating kept higher stability after 30 iterations of friction.Porous structures could also be constructed after acid treatment,which was utilized to load lubricant to enhance the lubricating property of the coating.This work provides a new method for the construction of dynamic and stable polyelectrolyte coatings,expediting more development of practical applications.

Rare variants of Bosworth fracture-dislocation: Bosworth fracture-dislocation with medial malleolus adduction type fracture

Bosworth ankle fracture-dislocation is rare, known to be an irreducible type of ankle injury, with a high incidence of complication. We present two cases of even rarer variants of Bosworth ankle fracturedislocation. The first case is a type of supination external rotation adduction, and the second case is a type of supination external rotati on adduction. These types have not bee n described before .In both of the cases we failed to achieve close reduction, and therefore proceeded with emergency surgeries, with open reduction and internal fixation. Both of the cases were performed with a postero-lateral approach to reduce the dislocations, and fix the fractures successfully. Unfortunately in one of the cases, acute compartment syndrome developed post-surgically. However, both cases showed good functional outcomes.

Weak interaction-steered evolution of polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic polyhedra from transformation via interlock to packing

A bottleneck in biomimetic synthesis consists in the full copy of,for example,the hierarchical structure of proteins directed by weak interactions.By contrast with covalent bonds bearing definite orientation and high stability,weak intermolecular forces within a continuous dynamic equilibrium can be hardly tamed for molecular design.In this endeavor,a ligand-dominated strategy that embodies tunable electrostatic repulsion andπ···πstacking was first employed to shape polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic polyhedra(VMOPs).Structural evolution involving transformation,interlock,and discovery of an unprecedented prototype of the Star of David was hence achievable.Not only as a handy tool for the primary structural control over VMOPs,these weak forces allow for an advanced management on the spatial distribution of such manmade macromolecules as well as the associated physicochemical behaviors,representing an ideal model for simulating and interpreting the conformation-function relationship of proteins.

Complex integrity constraint discovery: measuring trust in modern intelligent railroad systems

1Introduction Data are at the heart of intelligent rail systems in the high-speed transportation sector(Zhou et al.,2020;Ho et al.,2021;hu et al.,2021;Chen et al.,2022).The core of modern intelligent railroad systems typically includes rail transportation and equipment monitoring models learned from large datasets,which are often optimized for specific data and workloads(Zhu et al.,2019;Tan et al.,2020).While these intelligent railroad systems have been widely adopted and successful,their reliability and proper function will change as the data used changes.If the data used(on which the system operates)deviates from the fundamental constraints of the initial data(on which the system is trained)then,in that case,the system performance degrades,and the results inferred by the system model become unreliable,so the system model must be retrained and redeployed to re-store reliable inference results(Sharma and Chandel,2013).The mechanism for assessing the trustworthiness of intelligent rail system inferences is of paramount importance,especially for rail systems performing safety-critical or high-impact operations.
