There are two kinetic regimes in high temperature oxidation of metals and *** is the parabolic kinetics in which the ionic diffusion through oxide scales is the rate-determining *** other is the linear kinetics in which rate determining process is the supply of oxidant through the gaseous boundary *** oxygen chemical potential is almost the same as that in the atmosphere in the former case,but in the later case,the oxygen chemical potential is much lower than that in the *** oxygen chemical potential at the surface of scale is a good measure of the protective character of the scale.

Although auxin and brassinosteroid （BR） synergistically control various plant responses, the molecular mechanism underlying the auxin-BR crosstalk is not wen understood. We previously identified SMOS1, an auxin-regulated APETALA2-type transcription factor, as the causal gene of the small organ size 1 （smosl） mutant that is characterized by a decreased final size of various organs in rice. In this study, we identified another smos mutant, smos2, which shows the phenotype indistinguishable from smosl. SMOS2 was identical to the previously reported DWARF AND LOWoTILLERING （DLT）, which encodes a GRAS protein involved in BR signaling. SMOS1 and SMOS2/DLT physically interact to cooperatively enhance transcriptional transactivation activity in yeast and in rice nuclei. Consistently, the expression of OsPHI-1, a direct target of SMOS1, is upregulated only when SMOS1 and SMOS2/DLT proteins are both present in rice ceils. Taken together, our results suggest that SMOS1 and SMOS2/DLT form a keystone complex on auxin-BR signaling crosstalk in rice.

APPLICATION OF ORGANIC SULFUR COMPOUNDS FOR PETROLEUM REFINING PROCESSES

Size-segregated(9 stages)n-alkanes,polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and hopanes in the urban(Baoji city in inland China),mountain(*** in east coastal China)and marine(Okinawa Island, Japan)atmospheres over East Asia were studied using a GC/MS *** of n-alkanes (1698±568 ng m-3 in winter and 487±145 ng m-3 in spring),PAHs(536±80 and 161±39 ng m-3),and hopanes(65±24 and 20±2.4 ng m-3)in the urban air are 1?2 orders of magnitude higher than those in the mountain aerosols and 2?3 orders of magnitude higher than those in the marine *** ratios of n- alkanes,PAHs and hopanes clearly demonstrate coal-burning emissions as the major source of the determined organic *** distributions of fossil fuel derived n-alkane,PAHs and hopanes were found as a unimodal in most cases,peaking at 0.7?1.1μm *** contrast,plant wax derived n-alkanes present a bimodal distribution with two peaks at the sizes of 0.7?1.1μm and>4.7μm in the summer mountain and spring marine *** the three types of samples,geometric mean diameter(GMD)of the determined organics in fine mode(<2.1μm)was the smallest(av.0.63μm in spring)in the urban samples and the largest(1.01μm)in the marine samples,whereas the GMD in coarse mode(≥2.1μm)was smallest (3.48μm)in the marine aerosols and largest(4.04μm)in the urban *** fine mode of GMDs in the urban and mountain samples were larger in winter than in spring and ***,GMDs of 3-and 4- ring PAHs were larger than 5-and 6-ring PAHs in the three types of *** differences in GMDs may be interpreted by coagulation and repartitioning of organic compound during a long range transport from the inland continent to the marine site,suggesting that the size changes arising from these physical processes must be included in climate models in relevant to organic aerosols

The effects of sulfur compound PTMP and metal naphthenates on the conversion of the atmospheric residue to light oil and on the coke formation were investigated by carrying out thermal decomposition in a tubular type reactor. When 100 μg/g of PTMP was added to residue, gas oil yield increased, but the effect was not significant. However, the coke deposition in the reactor was reduced by the addition of PTMP. When 100 μg/g of ferric naphthenate was added, the significant effect was observed on the gas oil increase. However, the coke deposition was enhanced with the increase of gas oil yield by the addition of ferric naphthenate. Both of the increase in gas oil yield and the reduction of coke formation were observed when PTMP (1000 μg/g) and ferric naphthenate (100 μg/g) were simultaneously used. By the addition of the organic sulfur compound, the formation of the coke produced by the recombination of hydrocarbon redicals yielded by thermal decomposition was suppressed. The advantage of this method is that the construction of new equipment is not required and it enables the increase in the light oil fraction of residual oil by using the existing units.

Effect of stress ratio on fatigue lifetime and crack growth behavior of WC-Co cemented carbide

Two types of fatigue tests, a rotating bending fatigue test and a three- or four-point bending fatigue test, were carried out on a fine grained WC-Co cemented carbide to evaluate its fatigue crack growth behavior and fatigue lifetime. From successive observations of the specimen surface during the fatigue process, it was revealed that most of the fatigue lifetime of the tested WC-Co cemented carbide was occupied with crack growth cycles. Using the basic equation of fracture mechanics, the relationship between the fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) and the maximum stress intensity factor(Kmax) was derived. From this relation, both the values of the threshold intensity factor(Kth) and the fatigue fracture toughness(Kfc) of the material were determined. The fatigue lifetime of the WC-Co cemented carbide was estimated by analysis based on the modified linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. Good agreement between the estimated and experimental fatigue lifetimes was confirmed.

In recent years, it has been reported that WM (working memory) is concerned with word generation, but many points regarding the relationship between the individual differences of WM capacity and the patterns of word generation remain unclear. This study is to investigate these unclear points by using three types of word fluency task with different strategies. Subjects were 28 healthy native speakers of Japanese with an average age of 22.46 ± 3.26 years old. The experimental design included the following two tasks: (1) Japanese reading span test: Subjects were divided into the high-span, middle-span, and low-span WM capacity groups on the basis of the proportion of words recalled correctly; and (2) Word fluency task (category, letter, and verb conditions): In this task, subjects gave as many words as possible that were associated with each stimulus word within 60 s; four stimulus words in each category were used with 12 words in all. As a result, it has become clear that the high-span group with larger WM capacity can generate more words in number than the other groups and is superior in word generating capacity to them and that the low-span group with smaller WM capacity is the highest in the proportion of words generated in the first 15 s when their vocabulary is abundant, while it is the lowest during 45-60 s when their vocabulary dries up. The results suggest that WM capacity is involved in the ability to extract appropriate vocabulary from long-term memory information in immediate response.

Web-GIS Based Visualization System of Predicted Ground Vibration Induced by Blasting in Urban Quarry Sites

Blasting is routinely carried out at various resource extraction sites, even in urban areas. As a consequence of this, residents around urban quarry sites are affected by ground vibration induced by blasting on a regular basis. In this study, a prediction and visualization system for ground vibrations is developed for the purpose of reducing the adverse psychological effects of blasting. The system consists of predicting ground vibration using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and visualizing it on an online map using Web-GIS. A prediction model using ANN that learned the optimum weight by taking 50 sets of data indicated a regression value of 0.859 and a Mean Square Error (MSE) of 0.0228. Compared with previous researches, these values are not bad results. Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) was used as a metric to measure ground vibration intensity. A color contour is generated using GIS tools based on the PPV value of each prediction point. The system is completed by overlaying the contour onto a basic map in a website. The basic map shows the surrounding area through the use of Google Maps data. This system can be used by anyone with access to the internet and a browser, requiring no special software or hardware. In addition, mining operations can utilize the data to modify blasting design and planning to minimize ground vibration. In conclusion, this system has the potential to alleviate the worries of surrounding residents caused by ground vibrations from blasting due to the fact that they can personally check the predicted vibration around their locale. Furthermore, since this data will be publicly available on the internet, it is also possible that this system can contribute to research in other fields.

Performance Analysis of an Inverse Notch Filter and Its Application to F0Estimation

In this paper, we analyze an inverse notch filter and present its application to F0 (fundamental frequency) estimation. The inverse notch filter is a narrow band pass filter and it has an infinite impulse response. We derive the explicit forms for the impulse response and the sum of squared impulse response. Based on the analysis result, we derive a normalized inverse notch filter whose pass band area is identical to unit. As an application of the normalized inverse notch filter, we propose an F0 estimation method for a musical sound. The F0 estimation method is achieved by connecting the normalized inverse notch filters in parallel. Estimation results show that the proposed F0 estimation method effectively detects F0s for piano sounds in a mid-range.

A testing method for N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances in rubber teats and soothers was modified. N-Nitrosamines are generally analyzed using either a nitrogen chemiluminescence detector (NCD) or a thermal energy analyzer (TEA). However, because few testing laboratories are equipped with these devices, it is difficult to conduct these tests. Therefore, an analysis method for N-nitrosamines using the more widespread gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method was improved. In addition, EN 12868 was used to prepare the test solutions because of its worldwide use and compliance with EU regulations. Using GC-MS, EN 12868 method targeting ten kinds of N-nitrosamines was modified. The determination limits of the method were 1.0 -1.5 μg/kg for N-nitrosamines and 4 -6 μg/kg for N-nitrosatable substances. Quantification was possible at 1/5 or less and 1/15 or less, respectively, of the regulation values listed in EU Directive 93/11/EEC. In terms of application, there were no problems with the selectivity of the detector. The recoveries were 58% -109% for N-nitrosamines and 59% -102% for N-nitrosatable substances. Screening and verification were possible by measuring the amount of secondary amines in the boiled solution and migration solution.
