Clinical significance of white gastric crypt openings observed via magnifying endoscopy

AIM:To evaluate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori(***)-induced gastritis and white gastric mucosal crypt openings(COs)in the gastric ***:A total of 175 consecutive patients(including 69 patients with gastric cancer)were enrolled in this *** used magnifying endoscopy(ME)to observe the mucosa microsurface of the lesser and greater curvature of the gastric corpus(350 areas in all).We focused on areas with a round pit microstructure(primarily observed in non-atrophied areas)and evaluated the white openings of these gastric *** classified the whiteness of the COs as the"white-edged dark spot"type(consisting of a dark spot bordered by white);the"white"type(pure white with no dark spot);and the"dense white pit(DWP)"type(dense white,resembling a snowball).Gastritis was also histologically evaluated according to the updated Sydney ***:We detected round COs using ME in 246 of the 350 areas *** histological examination showed significantly more mononuclear cells and neutrophil infiltration in the"white"and"DWP"types than the"white-edged dark spot"type(P<0.001).Furthermore,significantly high-grade inflammation and evidence of active ***-induced gastritis was observed in the"DWP"type(P<0.001).Significant differences were observed in the whiteness of COs between ***-positive(n=139)and negative(n=36)patients(P<0.001).The sensitivity and specificity of the"white"and"DWP"types for predicting *** infection were78.5%and 81.7%,*** the patients with gastric cancer,22.5%(18/80)had"white-edged dark spots",51.3%(41/80)had"white"COs,and 26.3%(21/80)had"DWP"-type COs."DWPs"were frequently observed among patients with undifferentiated gastric cancer[45.7%(16/35)].CONCLUSION:CO whiteness detected via ME was associated with histological evidence of gastritis and helps to predict the severity of inflammation and *** activity.

Detection of cyclonic eddy generated by looping tropical cyclone in the northern South China Sea: a case study

A case study on the cyclonic eddy generated by the tropical cyclone looping over the northern South China Sea (NSCS) is presented, using TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data and AVHRR sea surface temperature (SST) data. Three cases relating to the tropical cyclone events (Typhoon Kai-Tak in July 2000, Tropical Storm Russ in June 1994 and Tropical Storm Maria in August-September 2000) over the NSCS have been analyzed. For each looping tropical cyclone case, the cyclonic eddy with an obvious sea level depression appears in the sea area where the tropical cyclone takes a loop form, and lasts for about 2 weeks with a slight variation in location. The cold core with the SST difference greater than 2℃against its surrounding areas is also observed by the satellite-derived SST data.

Human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiac patches have been extensively used for treating myocardialinfarction and have shown potential for clinical application. However, the limited patch thickness can hamper its therapeuticeffect. We previously developed a fibrous scaffold that allowed the formation of well-organized cardiac tissue constructs. Inthe present study, based on the above technology, we developed a three-dimensional multilayer fibrous scaffold with dynamicperfusion, on which approximately 20 million hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) could be seeded in a single step andorganized into 1 mm thick and viable tissue. The multilayer cardiac tissue demonstrated enhanced contractile properties andupregulated cytokine secretion compared with the control group. Notably, when used on the myocardial infarction model,the multilayer group showed improved functional recovery and less fibrosis. These results indicated that the appropriatehiPSC-CM dose requires careful evaluation in developing clinical therapy. The multilayer cardiac tissue group demonstratedsignificant improvement than the control group, indicating that higher doses of transplanted cells may have improvedtherapeutic effects in treating myocardial infarction.

Extraction Method and Determination of Sudan I Present in Sunset Yellow FCF by Isocratic High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

A method to extract and analyze Sudan I present in Sunset Yellow FCF (SYF) products was developed and validated. The method included the simple extraction of Sudan I from the SYF product using water, acetonitrile, and ethyl acetate and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis with isocratic elution using acetonitrile:water (7:3) with a photodiode array detector at 485 nm. This method was found to remove most of the excess SYF colorant and other impurities before injection to the HPLC instrument, making it easy to maintain precision control in routine laboratory tests for Sudan I in the SYF colorant. The detection limit of Sudan I in SYF products was 0.2 μg/g. A survey conducted to determine Sudan I in 13 commercial SYF samples from Japanese manufacturers from 1970 to 2010 showed that the levels of Sudan I ranged from 0.3 to 1.9 μg/g in products manufactured from 1970 to 1996 and were below the limit of detection in products manufactured after 2005.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the southeastem Vietnamese coastal waters have caused large economic losses in aquacultured and wild fisheries in recent years;however, there have been few oceanographic studies on these HAB events. The present study reported an extensive HAB off southeastern Vietnamese waters during late June to July 2002 with in situ observations and analyzed the oceanographic conditions using satellite remote sensing data. The HAB had high Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations (up to 4.5 mg m-3), occurring about 200 km off the coast and about 200 km north-east of the Mekong River mouth, for a period of about 6 weeks. The bloom was dominated by the harmful algae haptophyte Phaeocystis cf. globosa, and caused a very significant mortality of aquacultured fishes and other marine life. In the same period, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) imagery showed a coldwater plume extending from the coast to the open sea, and QuikScat data showed strong southwesterly winds blowing parallel with the coastline. The study indicated the HAB was induced and supported by offshore upwelling that bring nutrients from the deep ocean to the surface and from coastal water to the offshore, and the upwelling was driven by strong wind through Ekman transport when winds were parallel with the coastline. This study demonstrated the possibility of utilizing a combination of satellite data of Chl-a, SST and wind velocity together with coastal bathymetric information and in situ observation to give a better understanding of the biological oceanography of HABs.

Can Traditional Breathing Methods Reduce Stress?

Purpose: Traditional medicines have unique breathing methods and they are widely believed that they are good for health promotion and good for relax. However, there is little evidence. The purpose of this study is to discuss if such specific breathings could effectively reduce stress and be able to help to reach a relaxed state in the body as well as in the mind. To objectively understand the state of stress/relax, we assessed the condition of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) as well as heart rate (HR) and body temperature (BT), which instantly reflect ANS. Methods: Fourteen healthy male volunteers participated in this study and we investigated four kinds of breathing with them: Natural breathing (Control), Abdominal Pressure breathing (Pressure), Abdominal breathing (Abdominal) and Reverse Abdominal breathing (Reverse). Results: Only Control group showed increase of HF/decrease of HR, showing increase parasympathetic nervous system, which indicates the condition of relax. On the hand, all experimental groups of unique breathings showed increase of sympathetic nervous system, meaning stress. Discussion: Our hypothesis was that traditional breathing methods would decrease stress, however, our results were the total opposite to it. This reason might be found: 1) our subjects might be too young and naive, 2) they did not have enough training or experience, and 3) enough and appropriate duration of breathings was needed. Therefore, we consider that appropriate program and enough training time to use to specific breathing are needed to obtain the effects of traditional breathing.
