Is a semiprimary right self-injective ring a quasi-Frobenius ring？ Almost half century has passed since Faith raised this problem. He first conjectured “No” in his book Algebra II. Ring Theory in 1976, but changing his mind, he conjectured “Yes” in his article “When self-injective rings are QF： a report on a problem” in 1990. In this paper, we describe recent studies of this problem based on authors works and raise related problems.

Cyclones with strong winds can make the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic a dangerous *** weather forecasts are essential for safe shipping in the Southern Ocean and observational and logistical operations at Antarctic research *** study investigated the impact of additional radiosonde observations from Research Vessel"Shirase"over the Southern Ocean and Dome Fuji Station in Antarctica on reanalysis data and forecast experiments using an ensemble data assimilation system comprising the Atmospheric General Circulation Model for the Earth Simulator and the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter Experimental Ensemble Reanalysis,version 2.A 63-member ensemble forecast experiment was conducted focusing on an unusually strong Antarctic cyclonic *** data with(observing system experiment)and without(control)additional radiosonde data were used as initial *** observing system experiment correctly captured the central pressure of the cyclone,which led to the reliable prediction of the strong winds and moisture transport near the ***,the control experiment predicted lower wind speeds because it failed to forecast the central pressure of the cyclone *** were found in cyclone predictions of operational forecast systems with and without assimilation of radiosonde observations from Dome Fuji Station.

Adenocarcinoma arising from heterotopic pancreas at the third portion of the duodenum

A 62-year-old Japanese man presented to our hospital with a history of weight loss of 6 kg in 4 mo. Imaging examinations revealed a tumor located on the third portion of the duodenum with stenosis. We suspected duodenal carcinoma and performed pancreas-preserving segmental duodenectomy. Adenocarcinoma arising from a heterotopic pancreas at the third portion of the duodenum was finally diagnosed by immunohistochemical staining. Malignant transformation in the duodenum arising from a heterotopic pancreas is extremely rare; to our knowledge, only 13 cases have been reported worldwide, including the present case. The most common location of malignancy is the proximal duodenum at the first and descending portion. Herein, we describe the first case of adenocarcinoma arising from a heterotopic pancreas, which was located in the third portion of the duodenum, with a review of the literature.

Genetic polymorphisms in glutathione S-transferase T1 affect the surgical outcome of varicocelectomies in infertile patients

Glutathione S-transferases （GSTs）, superoxide dismutase 2 （SOD2） and NAD（P）H：quinone oxidoreductase 1 （NQO1） are anti-oxidant enzyme genes. Polymorphisms of GSTs, SOD2 and NQO1 have been reported to influence individual susceptibility to various diseases. In an earlier study, we obtained preliminary findings that a subset of glutathione S-transferase 7：1 （GSTT1）-wt patients with varicocele may exhibit good response to varicocelectomy. In this study, we extended the earlier study to determine the distribution of genotype of each gene in the infertile population and to evaluate whether polymorphism of these genes affects the results of surgical treatment of varicocele. We analyzed 72 infertile varicocele patients, 202 infertile patients without varicocele and 101 male controls. Genotypes of GSTs were determined by polymerase chain reaction （PCR）. Genotyping of SOD2 and NQO1 was performed using the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism （PCR-RFLP） method. A significantly better response to varicocelectomy was found in patients with the GSTTI-wt genotype （63.2%） and NQO1-Ser/Ser genotype （80.0%） than in those with GSTTI-null genotype （35.3%） and NQO1-Pro/Pro or NQO1- Pro/Ser genotype （45.2%）, respectively. The frequencies of glutathione S-transferase M1/T1, SOD2 and NQO1 genotypes did not differ significantly among the varicocele patients, idiopathic infertile patients and male controls. GSTT1 genotype is associated with improvement of semen parameters after varicocelectomy. As the number of patients with NQO1-Ser/Ser genotype was not sufficient to reach definite conclusions, the association of NQO1 genotype with varicocelectomy requires further investigation.

Rectal angiolipoma diagnosed after surgical resection: A case report

Angiolipoma is a common benign tumor with a char- acteristic vascular component that usually occurs in subcutaneous tissue. Although lipomas are frequently encountered at colonoscopy as submucosal tumors, an- giolipomas are rarely found in the gastrointestinal tract including the large intestine. Here we report a 77-year old Japanese man who underwent transanal resection of a tumor that was diagnosed tentatively as a leiomyoma. Histologically, the tumor consisted of mature fat cells and blood vessels. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were negative for c-kit and HMB-45, which are consis- tently expressed in tumors such as gastrointestinal stro- mal tumor and angiomyolipoma. The tumor was there- fore diagnosed as an angiolipoma. This is thought to be the first case report of a surgically resected angiolipoma of the rectum.

AIM:To determine the effects of genetic variants associated with gallstone formation and capsaicin (a pungent component of chili pepper) metabolism on the risk of gallbladder cancer (GBC).METHODS: A total of 57 patients with GBC, 119 patients with gallstones, and 70 controls were enrolled in this study. DNA was extracted from their blood or paraffi n block sample using standard commercial kits. The statuses of the genetic variants were assayed using Taqman SNP Genotyping Assays or Custom Taqman SNP Genotyping ***:The non-ancestral T/T genotype of apolipoprotein B rs693 polymorphism was associated with a decreased risk of GBC (OR:0.14,95% CI:0.03-0.63). The T/T genotype of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) rs708272 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of GBC (OR:5.04,95% CI:1.43-17.8).CONCLUSION: Genetic variants involved in gallstone formation such as the apolipoprotein B rs693 and CETP rs 708272 polymorphisms may be related to the risk of developing GBC in Chilean women.

We report here a case of multiple prolapsing mucosal polyps with diverticulosis in the sigmoid colon. A 52-year- old man was admitted to our hospital because of bloody diarrhea. Colonoscopy and barium enema showed multiple diverticula, markedly thickened mucosal folds and polypoid lesions with mucus on the top of them in the sigmoid colon. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed thickening of the mucosal and submucosal layers. Several endoscopic biopsy specimens were taken from the polypoid lesions. Histological examination revealed only chronic inflammatory cell infiltration. In order to obtain a definite diagnosis, we performed endoscopic jumbo biopsy for the polypoid lesions after obtaining informed consent. Histological examination revealed marked lymphocyte infiltration, hemosiderin deposits and fibromuscular obliteration in the lamina propria, features similar to those of mucosal prolapsing syndrome. After anti-diarrhetic treatment, clinical findings were improved. Thus, jumbo biopsy is useful for diagnosis and treatment of prolapsing mucosal polyps.

Does Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy for peptic ulcer prevent gastric cancer?

AIM:To investigate the effects of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)eradication therapy for treatment of peptic ulcer on the incidence of gastric cancer. METHODS:A multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted between November 2000 and December 2007 in Yamagata Prefecture,*** study included patients with H pylori-positive peptic ulcer who decided themselves whether to receive H pylori eradication(eradication group)or conventional antacid therapy(non-eradication group).Incidence of gastric cancer in the two groups was determined based on the results of annual endoscopy and questionnaire surveys,as well as Yamagata Prefectural Cancer Registry data,and was compared between the two groups and by results of H pylori ***:A total of 4133 patients aged between 13 and 91 years(mean 52.9 years)were registered,and 56 cases of gastric cancer were identified over a mean follow-up of 5.6 *** sex-and age-adjusted incidence ratio of gastric cancer in the eradication group, as compared with the non-eradication group,was 0.58 (95%CI:0.28-1.19)and ratios by follow-up period(3 years)were 1.16(0.27-5.00),0.50 (0.17-1.49),and 0.34(0.09-1.28),*** follow-up tended to be associated with better prevention of gastric cancer,although not to a significant *** significant difference in incidence of gastric cancer was observed between patients with successful eradication therapy(32/2451 patients,1.31%)and those with treatment failure(11/639 patients,1.72%).Among patients with duodenal ulcer,which is known to be more prevalent in younger individuals,the incidence of gastric cancer was significantly less in those with successful eradication therapy(2/845 patients,0.24%)than in those with treatment failure(3/216 patients,1.39%). CONCLUSION:H pylori eradication therapy for peptic ulcer patients with a mean age of 52.9 years at registration did not significantly decrease the incidence of gastric cancer.

Effect of electro-acupuncture on the expression of heat shock protein-70 gene in rat spinal cords following spinal cord injury

BACKGROUND： It is generally believed that the mechanism by which heat shock protein-70 （HSP70） protects cells is related to its effectiveness in maintaining the normal stereochemical structure of intracellular proteins, and in participating in the process of cell apoptosis. Whether electro-acupuncture participates in HSP70 expression and produces neuroprotective effects remain unclear. OBJECTIVE： This study aimed at detecting HSP70 expression after electro-acupuncture in rats with transected spinal cord, in order to further validate the mechanism of electro-acupuncture-induced effects in the treatment of spinal cord injury. DESIGN： A controlled observational experiment. SETTING： Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Toho University, School of Medicine. MATERIALS： Seventy adult male Sprague-Dawley rats of SPF grade, weighing 200± 20 g, were provided by the Laboratory Animal Center of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with permission No. SYXK （hu） 2004 - 2005. The animals were handled in accordance with the requests from Animal Ethics Committees for guidance. A G6805-2 multiple purpose treatment machine was used （Shanghai Medical Instruments High-Tech Co.,Ltd., Shanghai, China）. METHODS： This study was carried out in the state level laboratories of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Toho University, School of Medicine between January 2005 and July 2007. The rats were randomly divided into the electro-acupuncture treated group, which received electro-acupuncture treatment in addition to spinal cord surgery and the control group, which received only spinal cord surgery, with 35 rats in each group. All the rats underwent the same surgery consisting of spinal cord transection at the T10 level. If the spinal cord was completely transected and the two posterior limbs were completely paralyzed, then the surgery was considered successful and the animal was kept for further analysis and testing.
