Gender differences in adolescent dry eye disease:a health problem in girls

AIM： To evaluate the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease（DED） in adolescents. METHODS： This was a cross-sectional, case-control study and outpatients aged 10 to 19y were recruited from six eye clinics of various practices and locations in Japan, and 253 non-DED subjects and 70 DED patients were enrolled. Participants were examined for DED-related signs. Patients were also interviewed to ascertain the presence or absence of six common DED-related symptoms： dryness, irritation, pain, eye fatigue, blurring, and photophobia. Main outcome measures were differences in signs and symptoms of dry eye disease between boys and ***： Of the 323 adolescents recruited, 70（21.7%） were diagnosed with DED. Significant differences between the non-DED and DED groups were found for short tear break-up time（BUT; ≤5s; P=0.000） and superficial punctate keratopathy（SPK; staining score ≥3; P=0.000）. Late adolescent girls reported fewer symptoms than late adolescent boys, although their DED-related signs were worse compared to other groups. The prevalence and severity of DED were similar in the Tokyo area compared with suburban and local areas but myopic errors were worse. CONCLUSION： We find that adolescents reported symptoms of DED similar to those found in adults, and the majority have short BUT-type DED. The prevalence and severity of DED in late adolescent girls is comparable with adults. Adolescents with DED are underserved and we believe that DED is a hidden but potentially serious health problem for this age group.

AIM：To investigate the association between tear film break up time（TBUT）and blinking interval in visual display terminal（VDT）***：Nine hundred and thirty VDT users underwent dry eye testing,and functional visual acuity（FVA）*** blinking interval during FVA was compared with *** with longer blinking interval than TBUT were considered as unstable tear *** regression analysis revealed the risk factors for unstable tear ***：Among 930 workers,858 subjects（92.3%）participated in this *** 80% of the subjects were categorized into the unstable tear *** tear group has significantly lower Schirmer values and TBUT（17.5±11.6 vs 21.1±11.5 mm,3.7±2.6 vs 5.7±2.7s,both P〈0.001）.There were no significant differences in epithelial staining or severity of *** regression showed that over 40y was a risk for being unstable tear group[odds ratio（OR）=1.53;95%confidence interval（CI）=1.06-2.20].Contact lens use was protective factor for being in the unstable tear group（OR=0.37;95%CI=0.26-0.53）.CONCLUSION：Subjects with shorter TBUT than blinking interval are prevalent among VDT *** over the age of 40 shows an increased risk for unstable tear film.

We have isolated a recessive rice mutant, designated as indeterminate growth （ing）, which displays creeping and apparent heterochronic phenotypes in the vegetative period with lanky and winding culms. Rough mapping and subsequent molecular characterization revealed that the ing mutant carries a large deletion, which corresponds to a 103 kb region in the Nipponbare genome, containing nine annotated genes on chromosome 3. Of these annotated genes, the SLR1 gene encoding a DELLA protein is the only one that is well characterized in its function, and its null mutation, which is caused by a single base deletion in the middle of the intronless SLR1 gene, confers a slender phenotype that bears close resemblance to the ing mutant phenotype. The primary cause of the ing mutant phenotype is the deletion of the SLR1 gene, and the ing mutant appears to be the first characterized mutant having the entire SLR1 sequence deleted. Our results also suggest that the deleted region of 103 kb does not contain an indispensable gene, whose dysfunction must result in a lethal phenotype.

Conjugated polymers are widely used in organic optoelectronic devices due to their solution processability, thermal stability and structural diversity. Generally, alkyl side chains must be utilized to increase the solubility of final polymers in the processing solvent. However, the effects of different type alkyl chains on the properties of n-type photovoltaic polymers have rarely been investigated. In this article, we synthesized three naphthodithiophene diimide（NDTI） based polymers containing bulky alkyl chains with different branching position, named as NDTI-1, NDTI-2 and NDTI-3, respectively. We systematically investigated the effect of different branching point on the molecular packing, charge transport and photovoltaic performance. When moving the branching point away from the backbone, the intermolecular interaction became stronger, which could be proved by 2D grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering（GIWAXS） measurement. Therefore, the electron mobilities in organic field-effect transistors gradually increased from 2.11×10-3 cm2 V/-1 s-1 for NDTI-1 to 4.70×10-2 cm2 V/-1 s-1 for NDTI-2 and 9.27×10-2 cm2 V/-1 s-1 for NDTI-3,which are quite high values for polymers with face-on orientation. In addition, the NDTI-2 and NDTI-3 thin films exhibited redshifted absorption spectra compared with NDTI-1. When blending with three classic donor polymers PBDB-T, PTB7-Th and PE61, NDTI-2 based devices always showed the higher power conversion efficiencies（PCEs） than the other two polymers（beside the comparable result of PTB7-Th:NDTI-3 combination） as a result of the high photocurrent response and high fill factor. Our results indicate that bulky alkyl chain with branching point at 2-position should be a good and safe choice for the design of naphthodithiophene diimide-based and even naphthalene diimide-based n-type photovoltaic polymers.

We report on a case of Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS)with colon erosion, cholecystitis and liver abscesses. A 21-year-old woman with a history of bronchial asthma for 3 years was admitted with a complaint of abdominal pain. Laboratory findings included remarkable leukocytosis and eosinophilia, and a colonoscopy revealed erosion from the rectum to the ileocecal region. In addition, a colonic biopsy specimen showed necrotizing vasculitis and marked eosinophilic infiltration. On the basis of the clinical features and histopathological findings, she was diagnosed with CSS and subsequently treated with oral prednisolone,after which the eosinophilia and abdominal pain disappeared. However, on the 15th d in hospital she developed cholecystitis and liver abscesses. She was therefore treated with antibiotics and as a result went into clinical remission.

Objective： The mucus production is an indicator for the histological grade of mucinous epithelial ovarian cancer （mEOC）. In our previous study, Crk expression was targeted in the human ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma cell line MCAS through RNA interference, resulting in the establishment of Crk knock down cells. These cells exhibited decreased tumorigenic potential both in vitro and in vivo. The purpose of this study was to investigate if there is any change in the capability of forming mucus in these Crk knock down cells. Methods： Cytoplasmic periodic acid Schiff （PAS） staining and particle excluding assay were conducted to assess the mucus formation within and around cells, respectively. Additionally, the amount of mucus formed in tumor lumps from nude mice model was measured following HE and PAS staining. Results： The increased mucus production in Crk knockdown mEOC cells （MCAS） was manifested by increased number of enlarged cells filled with vacuoles-like mucus observed by phase-contrast microscope and cytoplasmic PAS staining; and enhanced mucus secretion was represented by the assembly of pericellular matrix in particle excluding assay and increased mucus area in tumor lumps from nude mice models. Conclusion： The course of carcinogenesis in mEOC is associated with the altered pattern of mucus production and secretion. The adaptor protein Crk is implicated in both pathways.

The surface water samples were collected in river Dahe and its tributaries, which flow into severely eutrophic lake Dianchi, Yunnan Province, China, in order to elucidate factors controlling water quality fluctuations. The temporal and spatial distribution of water quality tendency was observed. The water quality of each river is dependent on the hydrology effect such water gate and circulating irrigation system. We must consider the hydrology effect to accurately understand water quality variations of river in this study field. In river without highly circulating irrigation system or water gate effect, the downstream nitrate nitrogen （NO3-N） concentration increase occurred in area dominated by open field cultivation, whereas the NO3-N concentration was constant or decreased in area dominated by greenhouse land use. This result suggests that greenhouse covers the soil from precipitation, and nitrate load of greenhouse could be less than that of open field cultivation while the rainfall event. In the upper reaches of river, where is dominated by open field cultivation, there were no sharp increase dissolved molybdate reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus concentration, but P load was accumulated in the lower reaches of river, whose predominant land use is greenhouse. Although the P sources is unclear in this study, greenhouse area may have potential of P loads due to its high P content in greenhouse soil. Considering hydrology effect is necessary to determine what the major factor is influencing the water quality variation, especially in area with highly complicated irrigation system in this studying site.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 B(PTP1 B) has led to an intense interest in developing its inhibitors as anti-diabetes, anti-obesity and anti-cancer agents. The fruits of Rubus chingii(Chinese raspberry) were used as a kind of dietary traditional Chinese medicine. The methanolic extract of R. chingii fruits exhibited significant PTP1 B inhibitory activity. Further bioactivity-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of three PTP1 B inhibitory ursane-type triterpenes: ursolic acid(1), 2-oxopomolic acid(2), and 2α, 19α-dihydroxy-3-oxo-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(3). Kinetics analyses revealed that 1 was a non-competitive PTP1 B inhibitor, and 2 and 3 were mixed type PTP1 B inhibitors. Compounds 1-3 and structurally related triterpenes(4-8) were further analyzed the structure-activity relationship, and were evaluated the inhibitory selectivity against four homologous protein tyrosine phosphatases(TCPTP, VHR, SHP-1 and SHP-2). Molecular docking simulations were also carried out, and the result indicated that 1, 3-acetoxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid(5), and pomolic acid-3β-acetate(6) bound at the allosteric site including α3, α6, and α7 helix of PTP1 B.
