Changes in the number of circulating CD34＋ cells after eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors in relation to muscle damage

Background： It has been reported that strenuous exercise increases the number of bone marrow-derived progenitor cells such as CD34＋ cells in the blood, but no previous studies have investigated the changes in circulating CD34＋ cells following resistance exercise. This study tested the hypothesis that the number of CD34＋ cells in the blood would increase after eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors, but decrease in recovery, and the magnitude of the changes would be dependent on the magnitude of muscle damage. Methods： Nine men （28.0 ± 6.6 years） performed exercises consisting of 10 sets of six maximal voluntary eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors with their non-dominant arm. Six of them performed the same exercise with the same ann 4 weeks later. Changes in indirect markers of muscle damage were measured before, within 10 min after, and at 24, 48, 72, and 96 h after eccentric exercise. Differential leukocyte counts （total leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes） and CD34＋ cells in the blood were measured before, immediately after, and at 2, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h following the exercises. Results： After eccentric exercise, significant （p 〈 0.05） decreases in maximal voluntary isometric contraction torque and increases in delayed onset muscle soreness and plasma creatine kinase activity were observed. However, no significant changes in leukocytes and CD34＋ cells were evident. The changes in muscle damage markers were significantly （p 〈 0.05） smaller following the second exercise session as compared with the first exercise session, but the changes in leukocytes and CD34＋ cells were not significantly different between sessions. Conclusion： These results did not support the hypothesis, and showed that eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage to the elbow flexors did not influence the number of circulating CD34＋ cells.

Contact analysis can be either static or dynamic. In static contact analysis, the position on the contact surface is constant. In dynamic contact analysis, the position on the contact surface changes at every time step. In static contact analysis, the computing results (stress, strain, etc.) of contact states have been verified through the Hertz contact problem in literature. On the other hand, there has been insufficient research into dynamic contact analysis. The contact algorithm is insufficiently constructed in finite element model (FEM) discretization. The gap between two objects cannot be calculated accurately. A contact method is demanded for artificial parameters. Inappropriate setting of artificial parameters causes artificial numerical oscillations on the contact surface between objects. To develop a high-reliability satellite, we started the development of FEM contact-friction modeling techniques in this study. A dynamic contact method was realized by using the appropriate parameters required in the contact analysis. We verified the reproducibility of the physical behavior of the contact friction via numerical simulation techniques by using a computational model of the hinge joints.

Measurement of Catalase Activity Using Catalase Inhibitors

Catalase is an enzyme that scavenges hydrogen peroxide in the body and has the role of protecting the organism from oxidative stress. Since catalase activity is associated with various diseases, including diabetes, skin diseases like vitiligo, renal failure, and heart failure, it is important to measure its activity. However, it has been difficult to accurately evaluate catalase activity alone, because there are other substances in vivo, such as iron ions, that decompose hydrogen peroxide in addition to catalase. To solve this problem, we conducted a study to develop a method to correctly measure catalase activity from samples containing impurities with hydrogen peroxide removal activity. In this study, catalase inhibitors were added to bovine catalase solution, ferric chloride solution, cell lysates of control cells and experimentally generated catalase knockdown cells (CAT KD), and these mixtures were reacted with hydrogen peroxide to determine the percentage of hydrogen peroxide remaining in the reaction solution after a certain time. The catalase inhibitors used, 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole (3-AT) and sodium azide (NaN3), inhibited the removal of hydrogen peroxide by bovine catalase at a high rate in in-vitro experiments. However, these catalase inhibitors did not inhibit hydrogen peroxide removal in the Fenton reaction of iron ion and hydrogen peroxide in in-vitro experiments. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide removal by cell lysate was inhibited by the addition of 3-AT or NaN3. The inhibitory effect was equivalent or superior to that of CAT KD cells, in which catalase was experimentally knocked down. These results suggested that 3-AT and NaN3 specifically inhibit hydrogen peroxide removal of catalase. This paper deals with a collision avoidance problem for path-following of multiple holonomic robots. The path-following aims to move the robots along reference paths with assigned velocities. When there are geometric errors between the robots’ positions and the reference paths or when the differences between their velocities and assigned velocities are not zero, we expect to reduce these errors. Unfortunately if the multiple robots try to realize path-following completely they may collide with one another in areas where the reference paths intersect. In this case, the robots have to avoid collision at the expense of path-following. This paper defines a cost function evaluating the geometric and velocity errors, and proposes a new online collision avoidance method which constrains the cost function. The proposed method minimizes the time-derivative of the cost function in each instance Moreover, this method prevents the robots from deadlocking by introducing a penalty function for each robot into the cost function. Finally, the effectiveness of our proposed method is demonstrated by simulations for three mobile robots.

A 54-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of right upper quadrant pain. Upon physical examination the vital signs of the patient were within normal ranges. Ultrasonography and computed tomography （CT） examination of the abdomen was obtained, which demonstrated a large dilatated cystic structure, measuring approximately 68.6 mm × 48.6 mm, with marked distension and inflammation. Additionally, the enhanced CT was characterized by the non-enhanced wall of the gallbladder. As the third examination in this study, magnetic resonance imaging （MRI）, namely coronal MRI and magnetic resonance cholangio-pancreatography （MRCP）, were performed. The MRCP demonstrated a dilatation of the gallbladder but detected no neck of the gallbladder. Simple cholecystectomy was performed. Macroscopic findings included a distended and gangrenous gallbladder, and closer examination revealed a counterclockwise torsion of 360 degrees on the gallbladder mesentery. Coronal MRI and MRCP showing characteristic radiography may be useful in making a definitive diagnosis.

Diamond Rib: A Mechanical Design Method for Improving the Stiffness of a Structure

It is necessary to decrease the weight of space satellites, while maintaining their stiffness. To achieve this weight reduction, many structures, such as honeycomb and isogrid, have been reported in the literature. In this paper, the diamond rib method, a mechanical design method for improving the stiffness of structures, is introduced. By applying this method to a small space satellite, we propose a new structure called the “Diamond Rib Structure”. This structure significantly improves the ability to withstand the vibrational disturbances in a rocket fairing.

Background: Patients with arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) often have co-existing atherosclerotic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical features of patients with ASO, including the overlap of atherosclerotic risk factors, characteristics of car-diovascular events, and clinical prognosis. Method: We enrolled 205 consecutive patients who had ankle brachial index (ABI) of ?0.9 between January 2008 and December 2009. Fontaine (F) classification and clinical background were evaluated and clinical events including mortality and major adverse cardiocerebro-vascular events (MACCEs) were determined. Results: There was a high prevalence of each risk factor. Sixty- five percent of subjects had three or more of the four overlapping risk factors, including hypertension, dia- betes, dyslipidemia, and smoking. After a maximum follow-up of 800 days, the incidence of MACCEs and mortality was 46% and 10%, respectively. We divided the patients into two groups according to the presence of ASO symptoms (F1 and F2-4) and compared the incidence of events. The incidence of MACCEs and mortality in the F2-4 group was significantly higher than that in the F1 group (P = 0.048, P = 0.044, respectively). After excluding lower extremity revascularization, coronary artery disease was a common cause of MACCEs, and the mortality rates after MACCEs increased in a stepwise manner according to F classification severity (P = 0.028). Conclusion: Patients with ASO had overlapping coronary risk factors and a high incidence rate of cardiovascular events. The incidence of coronary events was common, especially in symptomatic patients, and the mortality rates after MACCEs were high in accordance with F classification severity.

Mobile agents are able to migrate among machines to achieve their tasks. This feature is attractive to design, implement, and maintain distributed systems because we can implement both client-side and server-side programming in one mobile agent. However, it involves the increase of data traffic for mobile agent migrations. In this paper, we propose program code caching to reduce the data traffic caused by mobile agent migrations. A mobile agent consists of many program codes that define a task executed in each machine they migrate; thus, the mobile agent migration involves the transfer of their program codes. Therefore, our method reduces the number of the transfer of program codes by using program code cache. We have implemented our method on a mobile agent framework called Maglog and conducted experiments on a meeting scheduling system.
