Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Clinical Stage II and III Thoracic Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Curative Esophagectomy

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a gastrointestinal carcinoma with a poor prognosis. To improve the survival of patients with this disease, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) has been introduced. However, the survival benefits of NAC or the correlation between NAC and postoperative complications have not been well considered. In the present study, we retrospectively investigated the clinicopathological effectiveness of NAC in patients with clinical stage II and III thoracic ESCC. This retrospective study enrolled 63 patients with clinical stage II and III thoracic ESCC, who underwent resection of the thoracic esophagus and three-field lymph node dissection between January 2007 and December 2013. NAC with cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was introduced in 38 patients. NAC did not correlate with the occurrence of postoperative complications. The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate of the 38 patients with NAC (41.6%) was similar to that for the 25 patients who did not receive NAC (38.1%;P = 0.784). However, we found that the DFS of 17 patients with histopathological Grade 2 and 3 tumors who received NAC (5-year DFS rate: 58.1%) was significantly higher than that of 21 patients with low histopathological grade tumors who received NAC (5-year DFS rate: 28.6%), or than that of the 25 patients who did not receive NAC (38.1%). Moreover, we found that the effectiveness of NAC assessed macroscopically did not correlate with the effectiveness of NAC assessed microscopically. These findings may indicate that preoperative estimation of NAC effectiveness is important in avoiding unnecessary adverse drug effects caused by NAC, and in prolonging the survival of patients with thoracic ESCC.

Non-invasive potato defects detection has been demanded for sorting and grading *** on the classification of the defects has been available,however,investigation on the severity level calculation is *** the detection of the common scab,it has been found that imaging in the infrared region provide an interesting characteristic that could distinguish defected area to normal ***,investigations on this wavelength range is interesting to add more knowledge and for *** this research,the multispectral image has been obtained and investigated especially at three wavelengths(950,1150,1600 nm).Image pre-processing and pseudo-color conversion techniques were explored to enhance the contrast between defects,normal background skin area and soil *** show that external defects,such as common scab and some mechanical damage types,appear brighter in the near infrared region,especially at 1600 nm against the normal skin *** has been found that pseudo-color images conversion provides more information regarding type if surface characteristics compared to grayscale single *** segmentation using pseudo-color images after multiplication operation pre-processing could be used for common scab and mechanical damage detection excluding soil deposits with a Dice Sorensen coefficient of *** addition,image segmentation using single image at 1600 nm shown relatively better results with Dice Sorensen coefficient of 0.72 with note that thick soil deposits will also be *** severity level evaluation had an R2 correlation of 0.84 against standard measurements of severity.

Guide vanes are installed in the Wells turbine in order to improve its efficiency, self-rotating characteristics and off design performance with stall. This work attempts to explain the role of these guide vanes on the basis of momentum theory. It is shown that the upstream vanes are more effective in enhancing efficiency than the downstream ones. A design method for guide vanes is suggested based on experimental data and potential theory. Experimental studies carried out by the author confirm the theory proposed.

Diamond Rib: A Mechanical Design Method for Improving the Stiffness of a Structure

It is necessary to decrease the weight of space satellites, while maintaining their stiffness. To achieve this weight reduction, many structures, such as honeycomb and isogrid, have been reported in the literature. In this paper, the diamond rib method, a mechanical design method for improving the stiffness of structures, is introduced. By applying this method to a small space satellite, we propose a new structure called the “Diamond Rib Structure”. This structure significantly improves the ability to withstand the vibrational disturbances in a rocket fairing.

The magnetic properties of exchange coupled composite （ECC） media that are composed of perpendicular magnetic recording media FePt MgO and two kinds of soft layers have been studied by using an x-ray diffractometer, a polar Kerr magneto-optical system （PMOKE） and a vibrating sample magnetometer （VSM）. The results show that ECC media can reduce the coercivities of perpendicular magnetic recording media FePt-MgO. The ECC media with granular-type soft layers have weaker exchange couplings between magnetic grains and the magnetization process, for ECC media of this kind mainly follow the Stoner Wohlfarth model.

In this study, we investigate the uncertainties associated with land surface processes in an ensemble predication context. Specifically, we compare the uncertainties produced by a coupled atmosphere-land modeling system with two different land surface models, the Noah- MP land surface model (LSM) and the Noah LSM, by using the Maximum Likelihood Ensemble Filter (MLEF) data assimilation system as a platform for ensemble prediction. We carried out 24-hour prediction simulations in Siberia with 32 ensemble members beginning at 00:00 UTC on 5 March 2013. We then compared the model prediction uncertainty of snow depth and solid precipitation with observation-based research products and evaluated the standard deviation of the ensemble spread. The prediction skill and ensemble spread exhibited high positive correlation for both LSMs, indicating a realistic uncertainty estimation. The inclusion of a multiple snowlayer model in the Noah-MP LSM was beneficial for reducing the uncertainties of snow depth and snow depth change compared to the Noah LSM, but the uncertainty in daily solid precipitation showed minimal difference between the two LSMs. The impact of LSM choice in reducing temperature uncertainty was limited to surface layers of the atmosphere. In summary, we found that the more sophisticated Noah-MP LSM reduces uncertainties associated with land surface processes compared to the Noah LSM. Thus, using prediction models with improved skill implies improved predictability and greater certainty of prediction.

A partial order on the set of the prime knots can be defined by the existence of a surjective homomorphism between knot groups. In the previous paper, we determined the partial order in the knot table. In this paper, we prove that 31 and 41 are minimal elements. Further, we study which surjection a pair of a periodic knot and its quotient knot induces, and which surjection a degree one map can induce.
