Renewable energies, such as solar and wind power, are increasingly being introduced as alternative energy sources on a glosbal scale toward a low-carbon society. For the next generation power network, which uses a large number of these distributed power generation sources, energy storage technologies will be indispensable. Among these technologies, battery energy storage technology is considered to be most viable. Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed a redox flow battery system suitable for large scale energy storage, and carried out several demonstration projects on the stabilization of renewable energy output using the redox flow battery system. This paper describes the advantages of the redox flow battery and reviews the demonstration projects.

Root of burdock contains high amounts of dietary fibers and polyphenols. To improve the functional properties, the root was fermented with Aspergillus awamori. Effect of the fermented burdock on alloxan-induced mouse diabetes was examined. A diet containing the 5% fermented burdock powers was prepared to examine effect of the burdock diet on alloxan-induced mouse diabetes. Mice fed the burdock diet and the control diet for 14 weeks. Then, alloxan (200 mg/kg of body weight) was administrated to each mouse. After 5 days from the administration, blood glucose assay and glucose tolerance test were carried out. Incidence of hyperglycemia decreased and the glucose metabolism was improved when mice fed the burdock diet. Insulin, C-peptide, biomarkers of oxidative stress in plasma and apoptosis in pancreas were examined and compared to those obtained from mice fed the control diet. It is deduced that alloxan-induced diabetes is caused to lower insulin concentration. The fermented-burdock diet improves the diabetes and prevents apoptosis in the pancreas.

Non-invasive prediction of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in Japanese patients with morbid obesity by artificial intelligence using rule extraction technology

AIM To construct a non-invasive prediction algorithm for predicting non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), we investigated Japanese morbidly obese patients using artificial intelligence with rule extraction *** Consecutive patients who required bariatric surgery underwent a liver biopsy during the operation. Standard clinical, anthropometric, biochemical measurements were used as parameters to predict NASH and were analyzed using rule extraction technology. One hundred and two patients, including 79 NASH and 23 non-NASH patients were analyzed in order to create the predictionmodel, another cohort with 77 patients including 65 NASH and 12 non-NASH patients were analyzed to validate the *** Alanine aminotransferase, C-reactive protein, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance, albumin were extracted as predictors of NASH using a recursive-rule extraction algorithm. When we adopted the extracted rules for the validation cohort using a highly accurate rule extraction algorithm, the predictive accuracy was 79.2%. The positive predictive value, negative predictive value,sensitivity and specificity were 88.9%, 35.7%, 86.2% and 41.7%, *** We successfully generated a useful model for predicting NASH in Japanese morbidly obese patients based on their biochemical profile using a rule extraction algorithm.

Simultaneous measurements of aeroacoustic sounds and wall vibration for exploring the contribution of tooth vibration in the production of sibilant sounds/s/

In order to understand the contribution of teeth vibration to the production of sibilant/s/, the pre-sent study was designed to develop a method of simultaneously measuring aeroacoustic sounds and the vibration of an obstacle. To measure the vibration without disturbing flow, the Michelson interferometer was employed. The flow channel, which had an obstacle wall inside of it, was fabricated such that it morphologically mimicked the simplified geometry of the oral cavity. Given airflows at a flow rate of 7.5 × 10–4 m3/s from the inlet, aeroacoustic sounds were generated. A spectrum analy-sis of the data demonstrated two prominent peaks in the sound at 1,300 and 3,500 Hz and one peak in the wall vibration at 3,500 Hz. The correlation in peak frequencies between the sound and wall vibration suggests that the sound at 3,500 Hz was induced by the wall vibration. In fact, the sound amplitude at 3,500 Hz decreased when the obstacle wall was thickened, which increased its rigidity (p < 0.05, t-test). The experimental results demonstrate that the developed techniques are capable of measuring aeroacoustic sound and obstacle wall vibration simultaneously, and suggest the potential to pave the way for detailed analysis of the production of sibilant sounds /s/.

Laparoscopic Choledochoduodenostomy for Biliary Alleviation

Choledochoduodenostomy (CDD) was very useful alternatives for treatment for patients with common bile duct (CBD) stones, especially recurrent stones, giant stones with choledochal dilatation, and difficult or failed cases by endoscopic treatment. Furthermore, CDD was also applied to biliary bypass by malignant obstruction. In these days, minimal invasive laparoscopic approach is adapted in these disorders. We have conducted to perform a laparoscopic CDD for biliary alleviation for patients with endoscopic management of difficult CBD stone with choledochal dilatation. A side-to-side CDD was created intra-corporeally using water-tight running absorbable suture by handmade 4-0 monofilament with double side needles, starting from the right side of choledochus, and continued along posterior wall until the left side of the choledochus followed by anterior-wall anastomosis as the same manner. Five patients were treated successfully by this laparoscopic procedure and remained well without bile leakage and reflux cholangitis for the short-term follow-up. The median operative time and intracorporeally anastomosis time were 182 (167 - 209) min and 33 (30 - 38) min, respectively. Median blood loss was 32 (little-90) ml, median hospital stay was 7 (5 - 14) days, and median follow-up time was 18 months. Although this series was relatively small, this laparoscopic technique is feasible and safe for biliary alleviation, especially for endoscopic management of difficult or failed CBD stones, and would also potentially adapt to biliary bypass by malignant obstruction.

Comparison of the Normal, Preperimetric Glaucoma, and Glaucomatous Eyes with Upper-Hemifield Defects Using SD-OCT

Purpose: We compared the thickness of circumpapillary retinal nerve fiver layer (cpRNFL) and macular ganglion cell layer with inner plexiform layer (GCL + IPL) using Cirrus HD-OCT (Ver.6.0: Carl Zeiss). Materials and Methods: This study included 12 eyes of normal controls, 10 eyes of preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) with loss of RNFL either in superior or in inferior hemisphere without visual field defects, and 22 eyes of glaucoma eyes with visual field defects restricted to upper hemifield (UHFD: early 10 eyes, severe 12 eyes). The cpRNFL thickness analyzed from disk center by dividing into 12 sectors. The GCL + IPL thickness analyzed from central fovea by dividing into six sectors. Both compared between normal eye group and other 3 groups using the average value of each sectors. Result: The cpRNFL and the GCL + IPL thickness were obviously thin as compared with normal eyes. Conclusion: Even if it is in the state where abnormalities are not detected using the Humphrey field Analyzer, it is suggested that the early structural change of glaucoma has already arisen.

MR Differentiation of Endometriomas Complicated with and without Malignancy: Comparison with Pathological Findings

Introduction: The purposes were to clarify the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of malignant ovarian lesions arising from endometriomas, and to compare the lesions’ histopathology and MRI characteristics. Materials and Methods: Between May 2004 and December 2012, 140 patients, all of whom were diagnosed as having an endometrioma by using MR imaging, underwent surgery. We compared the MR characteristics including size and signal intensity of the tumor and mural nodules, the thickness of the septum, and the thickness of the wall with the pathological diagnoses. The attached angles of the mural nodules to the cyst wall were also evaluated. Results: Among the 179 lesions, preoperative MR imaging diagnosed 153 benign and 26 malignant. Based on the pathological results, 169 were diagnosed as benign and 10 were diagnosed as malignant. Finally, preoperative MR imaging correctly diagnosed 152 benign (group 1) and nine malignant (group 2), misdiagnosed 17 benign as malignant (group 3) and misdiagnosed one malignant as benign (group 4). As for mural nodules, there was a significant difference between groups 1 and 2 in the mean maximum diameter of the mural nodules. An acute attached angle was shown in 1 of 7 in group 1, in 11 of 16 in group 2, and in 14 of 22 in group 3. We also compared benign group with malignant group on the final pathological findings. As for mural nodules, there was a significant difference between groups 1 + 3 and group 2 in the mean maximum diameter of the mural nodules. On dynamic study, there were 22 enhanced mural nodules (75.9%) on group 1 + 3. Conclusion: Most of endometriomas preoperatively diagnosed as benign were pathological benign lesions. Endometriomas that contain many enhanced mural nodules with papillary shape, larger size, showing hypointense on T1WI, hyperintense on T2WI and showing an acute attached angle may have malignant potential.
