Large deformation simulations of geomaterials using moving particle semi-implicit method

Numerical simulation tools are required to describe large deformations of geomaterials for evaluating the risk of geo-disasters. This study focused on moving particle semi-implicit(MPS) method, which is a Lagrangian gridless particle method, and investigated its performance and stability to simulate large deformation of geomaterials. A calculation method was developed using geomaterials modeled as Bingham fluids to improve the original MPS method and enhance its stability. Two numerical tests showed that results from the improved MPS method was in good agreement with the theoretical ***, numerical simulations were calibrated by laboratory experiments. It showed that the simulation results matched well with the experimentally observed free-surface configurations for flowing sand. In addition, the model could generally predict the time-history of the impact force. The MPS method could be a useful tool to evaluate large deformation of geomaterials.

The stability of open edged multi-walled carbon nanotubes has been investigated by using in situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy at elevated *** of inter-shell structures was experimentally observed for the first time and attributed to a robust interaction between adjacent concentric shells(so-called lip lip interaction).The fl uctuating behavior of the inter-shell structures suggests a mechanism by which the carbon atoms can pass in or out through the inter-shell edges during carbon nanotube growth or shrinkage processes.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential of various grids to satisfactorily simulate the development of a cooling film, using a coupled computation that takes into account the full geometry. Detailed computations of a single row of 30 degrees round holes on a flat plate are presented for blowing ratios of 0.764, 1.01 and 1.54. The simulation results are compared well with experimental data. The two-layer model gave more accurate results but consumed much more computational time than the standard wall functions. The k-ε turbulence model with wall functions with appropriate values of y^＋ is suitable for practical use. The results show the importance of the conjugate calculation for accurately describing the influence of the heat transfer within the cooling film.

The cytoplasmic incompatibility in the field population of Culex pipiens complex from China and Japan was studied. The results of the crossing experiments between 11 different strains suggest that some Japanese strains might be possible to be used for control Chinese strains by using male sterile technique, and the heavy infection of wolbachiae in mosquitoes may have some relations with the cytoplasmic incompatibility in the field population of Cx. pipiens complex.

Sodium-ion batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage due to sodium's low cost and infinite abundance. The most popular cathodes for sodium-ion batteries, i.e., the layered sodium-containing oxides, usually exhibit reversible host rearrangement between P-type and O-type stacking upon charge/discharge. Herein we demonstrate that such host rearrangement is unfavorable and can be suppressed by introducing transition-metal ions into sodium layers. The electrode with stabilized P3-type stacking delivers superior rate capability, high energy efficiency, and excellent cycling performance. Owing to the cation-mixing nature, it performs the lowest lattice strain among all reported cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. Our findings highlight the significance of a stable host for sodium-ion storage and moreover underline the fundamental distinction in material design strategy between lithium-and sodium-ion batteries.

A topologically mediated synthesis of porous boron nitride aerogel has been experimentally and theoretically investigated for carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. Replacement of the carbon atoms in a precursor aerogel of graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes was achieved using an elemental substitution reaction, to obtain a boron and nitrogen framework. The newly prepared BN aerogel possessed a specific surface area of 716.56 m2/g and exhibited an unprecedented twentyfold increase in CO2 uptake over N2, adsorbing 100 cc/g at 273 K and 80 cc/g in ambient conditions, as verified by adsorption isotherms via the multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Density functional theory calculations were performed to give hints on the mechanism of such high selectivity of CO2 over N2 adsorption in BN aerogel, which may be due to the interaction between the intrinsic polar nature of B–N bonds and the high quadrupole moment of CO2 over N2.

Response of Stretched Cylindrical Diffusion Flame to Sinusoidal Oscillation of Air Flow Velocity

An experimental study investigated the characteristics of a stretched cylindrical diffusion flame, with a convex curvature with respect to the air stream, in response to periodic air flow velocity oscillation. The fuel was methane diluted with nitrogen, and the oxidizer air. The oscillation frequency was varied from 5 to 250 Hz. The results are summarized as follows. Though the fluctuation amplitude of the air stream velocity gradient was constant with respect to the frequency, the amplitude of the fuel stream increased. The fluctuation amplitude of the flame radius changed quasi-steadily from 5 to 25 Hz, and decreased with increasing frequency in the frequency range greater than 50 Hz. The flame luminosity did not respond quasi-steadily at 5 Hz, and the oscillation amplitude of flame luminosity was less than that of a steady flame, over the same velocity fluctuation range. The oscillation amplitude of luminosity peaked at 50 Hz, and was greater than that of a steady flame. It is considered that this complex change in flame luminosity with respect to frequency was closely related to the phase difference in the respective time variations in the ratio of flame thickness to radius, the velocity gradients of the air and fuel streams, and the magnitude of these values, with the ratio of flame thickness to radius related to the flame curvature effect, the velocity gradient of the air stream correlated to the flame stretch effect, and the velocity gradient of the fuel stream impacting the fuel transportation.
