Stretching Induces the Rearrangement of the Periodontal Ligament Cells without Altering the Orientation of Oxytalan Fibers Relative to the Cell Axis in Vitro

The periodontal ligament (PDL) contains oxytalan fibers as well as collagen fibers, which helps it to withstand the mechanical stress to which it is constantly exposed. The oxytalan fibers are produced by PDL fibroblasts. However, the arrangement of PDL fibroblasts and the orientation of oxytalan fibers relative to the fibroblast cell axis have not been investigated under the condition of mechanical stress. We hypothesized that such stress would alter the arrangement and orientation of these cells and their oxytalan fibers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of stretching strain on PDL fibroblasts, focusing on the cellular arrangement and orientation of oxytalan fibers relative to the long cell axis in cell/matrix layers by staining the major component of the fibers, fibrillin-1. The angle between the long cell axis and the oxytalan fibers was approximately 70 degrees under both non-stretching and stretching conditions. Moreover, stretching induced the rearrangement of the cells. This is the first study to demonstrate that stretching induces the rearrangement of the PDL fibroblasts without altering the angle between the long cell axis and the oxytalan fibers. These results may reflect the orientation of oxytalan fibers in the PDL under the condition of mechanical stress.

A case of a patient with bilateral endophthalmitis and vertebral infection is presented here. The case presented with fever, general malaise, reduced vision and back pain for at least two weeks. Diagnosis was established by positive blood cultures together with ophthalmology review and radiological findings. Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis was isolated from blood cultures. This case demonstrates the risks for older patients of developing invasive disease upon exposure to Streptococcus dysgalactiae, even if underlying diseases are absent.

Humic acid has been considered as one of the most significant sources in feed water causing organic fouling of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, but the relationship between the fouling behavior of humic acid and the change of its molecular structure has not been well developed yet. In this study, the RO membrane fouling behavior of humic acid was studied systematically with ozonation as a pretreatment method to control RO membrane fouling. Furthermore, the effect of ozone on the structure ofhumic acid was also explored to reveal the mechanisms. Humic acid alone (10-90 mg/L, in deionized water) was found not to cause obvious RO membrane fouling in 45-h operation. However, the presence of Ca^2+ aggravated significantly the RO membrane fouling caused by humic acid, with significant flux reduction and denser fouling layer on RO membrane, as it was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). However, after the pretreatment by ozone, the influence of Ca^2+ was almost eliminated. Further analysis revealed that the addition of Ca^2+ increased the particle size of humic acid solution significantly, while ozonation reduced the SUVA254, particle size and molecular weight of the complexes of humic acid and Ca^2+(HA-Ca^2+ complexes). According to these results and literature, the bridge effect of Ca^2+ aggregating humic acid molecules and the cleavage effect of ozone breaking HA-Ca^2+ complexes were summarized. The change of the structure of humic acid under the effect of Ca^2+ and ozone is closely related to the change of its membrane fouling behavior.

We have developed an apparatus for producing high-density hydrogen plasma. The atomic hydrogen density was 3.0 × 1021 m?3 at a pressure of 30 Pa, a microwave power of 1000 W, and a hydrogen gas flow rate of 5 sccm. We confirmed that the temperatures of tungsten films increased to above 1000?C within 5 s when they were exposed to hydrogen plasma formed using the apparatus. We applied this phenomenon to the selective heat treatment of tungsten films deposited on amorphous silicon films on glass substrates and formed polycrystalline silicon films. To utilize this method, we can perform the crystalline process only on device regions. TFTs were fabricated on the polycrystalline silicon films and the electron mobilities of 60 cm2/Vs were obtained.

Assessment of Human Skeletal Muscle Contraction and Force by Diffusion Tensor Imaging

We aimed to investigate the association between mobility and skeletal muscle strength by using magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). This study included 20 healthy male volunteers (mean age, 21.8 ± 1.1 years). The maximum voluntary strength (MVC) of each participant was measured with the ankle joint in plantar and dorsal flexion using an instrument for measuring muscle strength. Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed with the ankle joint at rest, in plantar flexion, and in dorsal flexion. For imaging, a 1.5-T MRI device was used, and a diffusion-weighted stimulated echo-planar imaging pulse sequence. Tensor eigenvalues (λ), fractional anisotropy (FA), and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated from data obtained by DTI. The resulting MRI data were compared to the data on muscle mobility or strength and statistically analyzed. Regarding changes in DTI indices during muscle movements, anisotropy of the tibialis anterior was significantly increased from rest to plantar flexion (P < 0.01), whereas no significant change was observed in dorsal flexion (n.s.). In contrast, the extent of significant changes in anisotropy of the medial gastrocnemius (mGC) and soleus (SOL) was small at plantar flexion (mGC, P < 0.01;SOL, n.s.), whereas the indices were significantly increased at dorsal flexion (P < 0.01). Regarding the correlation between MVC of each skeletal muscle and the DTI indices, FA and λ3 were significantly correlated in movements involving the muscles, whereas no significant correlation was observed in movements not involving them. Changes in intramuscular water molecules by elongation and contraction of the skeletal muscle fibers could be assumed to affect changes in diffusional anisotropy. When muscles contract, the space between myocytes was reduced and they might become increasingly dense. Moreover, diffusional anisotropy increased with increasing MVC, whereas ADC remained unchanged. Inflammation is a central process in several disorders and contributes to cancer progression. Inflammation involves a complex cascade of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory signaling events with protein and lipid mediators. Recent advances in lipid detection have revealed the importance of lipid mediators in inflammation. Omega three polyunsaturated fatty acids(ω-3 PUFA) are found naturally in fish oil and have been extensively studied in multiple inflammatory diseases with improved outcomes. Resolvins are thought to be the active metabolites of ω-3 PUFA, and are responsible for facilitating the resolving phase of acute inflammation. Clinically, resolvins have been associated with resolution of acute kidney injury and acute lung injury, micro and macro vascular response to injury, and inhibition of microglia-activated inflammation in neurodegenerative disorders. In addition to inflammatory diseases, ω-3 PUFA and resolvins appear to modulate cancer progression. ω-3 PUFA intake has been associated with reduced inflammation in colorectal cancer, and favorable phenotype in breast cancer. Resolvins offer promising therapeutic potential as they may modulate inflammation with minimal side-effects, in contrast to currently available anti-inflammatory medications. This review describes the roles of ω-3 PUFA and resolvins in the inflammatory cascade, various inflammatory diseases, and specific cancers. Additionally, it will discuss the clinical therapeutic potential of resolvins astargets in inflammatory diseases and cancers.
