Nitrogen-based fertilizers differentially affect protist community composition in paddy field soils

Protists are one of the most diverse and dominant microbial groups and they play critical roles in the soil *** nitrogen fertilizers have a profound impact on protist communities,still less is known about how different nitrogen fertilizer types affect protist community composition in different soil *** we investigated the effects of six inorganic nitrogen fertilizers(urea,ammonium nitrate,ammonium sulfate,potassium nitrate,ammonium chloride,and diammonium hydrogen phosphate)and an organic fertilizer(a mixture of rice husk and cow manure)on protist community composition in three paddy field soils using a high-throughput sequencing *** effect of the fertilizers on the functional groups of protists,namely consumers(predators and decomposers),photoautotrophs,and parasites(plant pathogens and animal parasites)was also *** results showed that nitrogen fertilizers had distinctive effects on the beta diversity of the protists,while we also observed that the same fertilizer had slightly different effects depending on the soil *** and Rhizaria were the most affected protist taxonomical groups,while predatory protists were the main functional groups that were affected by nitrogen *** forest analysis showed that most of the fertilizer-affected protists were predators,among which Cercozoa was the most affected *** conclusion,our results provide important insights into the impact of nitrogen fertilizers on soil protist communities.

对日本旧石器时代晚期开端的探讨主要通过两种模式展开，即列岛内旧石器时代中期演化模式和大陆旧石器时代晚期扩散或迁徙模式，然而，最近来自日本和周边国家的考古学证据正对这种简单的模式提出挑战。本文批判性地回顾了包括可能存在的早中期在内的日本旧石器时代已有年代序列，并尝试展示有关日本旧石器时代晚期开端的另一种模式。本文列举了一些可能属于旧石器时代早中期的发现，并建议进一步开展地质考古研究，以了解其可信度以及与旧石器时代晚期早段(EUP)之间的文化关系。目前，日本EUP的开端以距今约3.9-3.7万年前古本州岛具有台形石器和锯齿刃器的石片工业为特征。尽管台形石器仅流行于日本EUP阶段，并且可能源自岛内更早的石器传统，但这一石器工业也在一定程度上显示出与同时期中国和朝鲜半岛石器组合的相似之处。石叶技术最早出现于古本州岛中部，比最早的石片技术晚了约1000年。虽然石叶技术可能起源于前一时期的长石片技术，但突然性的同时出现也可能意味着这一技术由朝鲜半岛扩散而来。本文认为，由于区域适应策略的不同，源自朝鲜半岛的石叶技术进入到古本州岛东北部，包括本州西部的日本海沿岸地区，而不是石片技术长期盛行的西南地区。

Ependymoma is a rare and chemotherapy-resistant brain tumor, which has resulted in a delay in the development of drugs to treat it. A subclass of supratentorial ependymomas (ST-EPN), designated ST-EPN-zinc finger-translocation-associated (ZFTA, ST-EPN-ZFTA), exhibits the expression of a fusion protein comprising ZFTA and v-rel reticuloendotheliosis viral oncogene homolog A (RELA), an effector transcription factor of the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway (ZFTA-RELA). The expression of ZFTA-RELA results in the hyperactivation of the oncogenic NF-κB signaling pathway, which ultimately leads to the development of ST-EPN-ZFTA. To identify inhibitors of the NF-κB signaling pathway activated by the expression of ZFTA-RELA, we used a doxycycline-inducible ZFTA-RELA-expressing NF-κB reporter cell line and found that extracts of the fungus Neosartorya spinosa IFM 47025 exhibited NF-κB inhibitory activity. We identified eight compounds [aszonapyrone A (2), sartorypyrone A (3), epiheveadride (4), acetylaszonalenin (5), (R)-benzodiazepinedione (6), aszonalenin (7), sartorypyrone E (8) and (Z, Z)-N,N’-(1,2-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)methylene]-1,2-ethanediyl)bis-formamide (9)] from N. spinosa IFM 47025 culture extract using a variety of chromatographic techniques. The structures of these compounds were identified through the analysis of various instrumental data (1D, 2D-NMR, MS, and optical rotation). The NF-κB responsive reporter assay indicated that compounds 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 exhibited inhibitory activity. We further evaluated the inhibitory activity of these compounds against the expression of endogenous NF-κB responsive genes (CCND1, L1CAM, ICAM1, and TNF) and found that compound 2 showed significant inhibitory activity. Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanism of action of compound 2, which may serve as a lead compound for the development of a novel therapy for ST-EPN-ZFTA.

With the aim of developing a new silicon refining process for production of solar grade silicon, a low-temperature refining technique referred to as ＂solidification refining of silicon with a Si-Al solvent at low temperature＂ was studied. The refinability of silicon by the partial solidification from a Si-Al solvent was discussed with thermodynamic evaluation for the impurity segregation between solid silicon and a Si-Al solvent. Impurity segregation ratios were measured by using temperature gradient zone melting method for phosphorus and boron and were estimated by the thermodynamic calculation for metallic impurities. The excellent refinability was clarified from the extremely small segregation ratios of impurities at lower temperature and was also confirmed by the test refining with the partial solidification under the induction heating. Furthermore, silicon crystal growth was studied by directional solidification experiments of a Si-Al alloy, and was estimated to be diffusion controlled.

Hierarchically porous monoliths based on copper (Cu), cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn) oxides with three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected macropores and open nanopores were prepared using metal bromides as precursors via a sol–gel process accompanied by phase separation. The difficulty of gelation for low-valence metal cation was overcome by introducing a highly electronegative Br atom near to the metal atom to control the rates of hydrolysis and polycondensation. The 3D interconnected macropores were obtained using appropriate polymers to induce phase separation. The domain sizes of macropores and skeletons can be controlled by reaction parameters such as concentration and/or average molecular weight of polymers, and the amount of hydrochloric acid. The crystalline metal oxide monoliths with their 3D interconnected macroporous structure preserved were obtained after heat treatment in air.
