Funabot-Suit:A bio-inspired and McKibben muscle-actuated suit for natural kinesthetic perception

In recent years,there has been extensive utilization of actuators driven by artificial muscles in wearable ***,the muscle distribution configurations of most wearable devices have been specifically designed and are difficult to ***,wearable devices that allow direct installation of actuators onto existing clothing are better suited for a wider range of application *** letter presents the development and evaluation of Funabot-Suit,a human muscle configuration inspired wearable assist device that employs McKibben artificial muscles to induce natural kinesthetic perception in the wearer’s *** integrating thin McKibben muscles into an existing motion capture suit,the Funabot-Suit is capable of generating four fundamental motions:forward and backward bending,and left and right *** suit’s performance was assessed through experiments involving three subjects who wore the suit while standing and seated,with the subjects reporting the direction of their kinesthetic *** subjects also rated the perceived ease of kinesthetic perception direction on a five-point *** results demonstrate that the Funabot-Suit successfully induces kinesthetic perceptions for the wearer,with a one hundred percent detection ratio for accurate responses in the command direction across all subjects and *** observed variations in the sensitivity of left–right and up-down sensations,which can be attributed to the positioning of artificial muscles and individual differences.

Feasibility of laparoscopic total gastrectomy in overweight patients: Implications of less impact of overweight on laparoscopic versus open approach

AIM To investigate safety and oncological feasibility of laparoscopic total gastrectomy(LTG) in overweight(OW) *** Patients who underwent total gastrectomy(110 laparoscopic, 211 open) for gastric cancer between January 1999 and July 2016 were included. Propensity score matching selected 152 patients(76 laparoscopic, 76 open), which were subsequently divided into the OW(≥ 25) or non-OW(< 25) group by body mass index. Postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic versus open approaches were compared between OW and non-OW groups. RESULTS In the propensity-matched population, baseline characteristics were comparable between the OW and nonOW groups for the laparoscopy and open groups. In the laparoscopy group, operative time was longer(P = 0.01) in the OW group, however, other perioperative results including complication rates were comparable between the non-OW and OW groups. In the open group, number of retrieved lymph nodes were less(P = 0.03) and local complication rate was more frequent(P = 0.03) in the OW group. CONCLUSION LTG in OW patients remains technically challenging but can be performed safely. Our findings imply that OW has a lesser effect on the laparoscopic versus open approach to total gastrectomy.

Relationship between urinary cadmium and mortality in habitants of a cadmium-polluted area： a 22-year follow-up study in Japan

Background Several studies have suggested that the exposure to cadmium （Cd） increased mortalities from renal diseases, cardiovascular diseases and malignant neoplasm, including lung cancer and prostate cancer among inhabitants living in Cd-polluted areas and factory workers. This study aimed to assess the influence of environmental exposure to Cd on long term outcome of inhabitants living in an area polluted by Cd. Methods A 22-year follow-up study was conducted with 3119 inhabitants （1403 men and 1716 women） living in the Cd polluted Kakehashi River basin in Japan. The subjects were divided into 4 groups according to the amount of urinary Cd level （〈3.0 μg/g creatinine （Cr）, 3.0-4.9 μg/g Cr, 5.0-9.9 μg/g Cr, and -〉10.0 μg/g Cr）. Mortality was calculated by the person-years method. Hazards ratios （HR） and 95% confidence intervals （CI） were assessed by the Cox＇s proportional hazard model. Results Compared with urinary Cd 〈3.0 μg/g Cr group, the HR of 5.0-9.9μg/g Cr and 〉10.0 μg/g Cr groups were significantly increased after adjustment for age in both sexes： 1.24 （95% Cl 1.01-1.51） and 1.48 （95% CI 1.17-1.90） for men; 1.64 （95% CI 1.17-2.28） and 1.78 （95% Cl 1.27-2.50） for women. The most frequent cause of death was malignant neoplasm in men and cardiovascular diseases in women. The significant increase in mortality risk for cardiovascular diseases was observed in the subjects with 〉10 μg/g Cr in both sexes： 1.79 for men （95% Cl 1.02-3.12） and 2.38 for women （95% Cl 1.11-5.07）. When the subjects were divided into 2 categories （〈20μg/g Cr and 〉20 μg/g Cr）, the HR of the urinary Cd 〉20 μg/g Cr group for nephritis and nephrosis were 4.82 （95% Cl 1.07-21.61） in men and 7.92 （95% Cl 1.77-35.33） in women, respectively. The significant increase was not observed for malignant neoplasm. Conclusion These results suggest a dose-response relationship between Cd body burden and mortality for cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and nephritis and nephrosis.

Measurement of D（d,p）T Reaction Cross Sections in Sm Metal in Low Energy Region （10 ≤ Ed ≤20 keV）

To study the screening effect of nuclear reactions in metallic environments, the thick target yields, the cross sections and the experimental S（E） factors of the D（d, p）T reaction have been measured on deuterons implanted in Sm metal at 133.2K for beam energies ranging from 10 to 20 ke V. The thick target yields of protons emitted in the D（d, p）T reaction are measured and compared with those data extrapolated from cross sections and stopping power data at higher energies. The screening potential in Sm metal at 133.2K is deduced to be 520±56eV. As compared with the value achieved in the gas target, the calculated screening potential values are much larger. This screening potential cannot be simply interpreted only by the electron screening. Energy dependences of the cross section σ（E） and the experimental S（E） factor for D（d,p）T reaction in Sm metal at 133.2K are obtained, respectively.

BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor(SFT)is a rare fibroblastic mesenchymal neoplasm that affects spindle cell soft tissues with broad-spectrum biological behavior;it is predominantly benign,and rarely *** occurs mainly in the tissue structure of the serosa in the pleura and the thorax,and can be found throughout the body,though extra-thoracic localization,including the cephalic region,is *** reported the first case of intracranial malignant SFT metastasized to the chest *** SUMMARY An 81-year-old Japanese man was referred to our hospital due to progressive gait disturbance and appetite *** medical history included partial resection due to brain tumor,four times,and 50-Gray radiation therapy at another hospital,starting when he was 74 years *** unenhanced head computed tomography(CT)scan revealed an 8 cm×5.1 cm×6.5 cm mixed-density mass at the left frontal lobe,accompanying a midline shift,and an unenhanced chest-abdomen CT scan revealed a 6 cm×4.1 cm×6.5 cm low-density mass in the left chest wall.A CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy was performed,and the pathological findings were SFT corresponding to brain ***,the correct diagnosis of his brain tumor in history of past illness revealed to be SFT,and the unremovable tumor,namely present brain lesions enlarged and metastasized to the chest *** established a definitive diagnosis of intracranial malignant SFT metastasized to the chest *** notified him and his family of the disease,and offered palliative *** passed away on the 29 th hospital *** This case suggests the need for careful,detailed examination,and careful followup when encountering patients presenting with a mass.

Application of the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) to Patients with Interstitial Lung Disease

The COPD Assessment Test was recently developed to assess health status in patients with COPD. However, little was known about its application to patients with interstitial lung disease, so we examined the relationship between the COPD Assessment Test score and respiratory impairment including the clinical picture in subjects with interstitial lung disease. Data were collected retrospectively from 52 consecutive subjects with interstitial lung disease on admission to our facility. All subjects completed the COPD Assessment Test, in which a higher score represented a worse health status. They were also assessed by pulmonary function test, SpO2 during 6-min walk test, and arterial blood gases. The COPD Assessment Test score was negatively correlated with the percentage of predicted forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 second, total lung capacity, diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, and PaO2 (p = 0.0005, 0.005, 0.0002, 0.0005, and 0.002, respectively). Breathlessness was detected as the high scoring item, while phlegm and sleep were the last affected items. The COPD Assessment Test score was higher in subjects with oxygen desaturation in SpO2 (≥4%) during 6-min walk test (p = 0.0001) and in subjects on home oxygen therapy (p = 0.0007). More than 75% of subjects with oxygen desaturation during walking were classified into a medium or severer impact level of the COPD Assessment Test score, and subjects on home oxygen therapy were classified into a high or severer impact level. PaCO2 in room air and SpO2 at rest did not correlate with the COPD Assessment Test score. The reliability of items in the COPD Assessment Test was 0.87 by Cronbach’s α coefficient. Our results suggest that the COPD Assessment Test may be a candidate for evaluating the health status and impact of disease on patients with interstitial lung disease.

GAS PERMEABILITY OF COPOLY(1-TRIMETHYL-SILYL-1-PROPYNE-PENTAMETHYL-DISILYL-1-PROPYNE) MEMBRANE

The permeability of copoly (1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne-pentamethyldisilyl-1-propyne) membrane for twelve gases (0_2, N_2, CO_2, H_2, D_2, He, At, CH_4, C_2H_4, C_2H_6, C_3H_6 and C_3H_8) was examined. The basic laws of solution and diffusion of the gases in the membrane were expounded preliminarily. It was found that a linear relationship between logarithm of diffusion coefficient (D) and critical molar volume (V_c) of the gases. The permeation characteristics of the gases in the copoly (1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne-pentamethyldisilyl-1-propyne) membrane was also discussed.
