Predictive factors for body weight loss and its impact on quality of life following gastrectomy

To determine the predictive factors and impact of body weight loss on postgastrectomy quality of life (QOL). METHODSWe applied the newly developed integrated questionnaire postgastrectomy syndrome assessment scale-45, which consists of 45 items including those from the Short Form-8 and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale instruments, in addition to 22 newly selected items. Between July 2009 and December 2010, completed questionnaires were received from 2520 patients with curative resection at 1 year or more after having undergone one of six types of gastrectomy for Stage I gastric cancer at one of 52 participating institutions. Of those, we analyzed 1777 eligible questionnaires from patients who underwent total gastrectomy with Roux-en-Y procedure (TGRY) or distal gastrectomy with Billroth-I (DGBI) or Roux-en-Y (DGRY) procedures. RESULTSA total of 393, 475 and 909 patients underwent TGRY, DGRY, and DGBI, respectively. The mean age of patients was 62.1 ± 9.2 years. The mean time interval between surgery and retrieval of the questionnaires was 37.0 ± 26.8 mo. On multiple regression analysis, higher preoperative body mass index, total gastrectomy, and female sex, in that order, were independent predictors of greater body weight loss after gastrectomy. There was a significant difference in the degree of weight loss (P 25 kg/m2). Multiple linear regression analysis identified lower postoperative body mass index, rather than greater body weight loss postoperatively, as a certain factor for worse QOL (P 2, 0.028-0.080). CONCLUSIONWhile it is certainly important to maintain adequate body weight after gastrectomy, the impact of body weight loss on QOL is unexpectedly small.

Precise Control in Characteristics of Nano-particulate MFI-Type Ferrisilicate and Their Catalysis in the Conversion of Dimethyl Ether into Light Olefins

This study reports the synthesis of size-controlled Fe-MFI （Fe-substituted zeolites with the MFI topology） and their catalytic performances for DTO （dimethyl ether-to-olefins） reaction. The amount of HC1 and aging temperature were decisive factors to control the particle size of Fe-MFI in the range of 50 nm to 600 nm. The introduction of Fe3＋ ions into the zeolitic framework was confirmed by UV （ultraviolet）-visible spectroscopy. In addition, it was observed that the strength of acid site in prepared Fe-MFI was weaker than that of commercial ZSM-5. With decrease in the particle size, the amount of deposited coke decreased so that the catalyst life for the DTO reaction was well promoted. The present catalysts showed the higher light-olefin selectivity （C2= ＋ C3= ＋ C4=） than commercial ZSM-5 catalysts mainly due to the suppression of the formation of paraffins; however, the Fe-MFI catalysts were deactivated rapidly because of their low activity for the cracking of alkenes.

Factors that Affect Pellet Quality： A Review

Pelleting is the most popular thermal processing technique in poultry industry. Birds fed pelleted diets have greater feed intake and weight gain, and better feed conversion ratio. However, this better performance can only be achieved, if the pellets remain intact until they are ingested by the birds. Many factors may affect pellet physical quality, such as feed nutritional composition, ingredient particle size, conditioning temperature and time, feed moisture, etc.. Despite their importance, sometimes these factors are not managed properly, therefore, pelleted feed may not contain a high amount of intact pellets. In addition, the possible interactions among these variables may yield different responses in comparison with those expected when individual factors are considered. Very few experiments have been conducted to evaluate the impact of combined factors on pellet quality. This may be explained by the presence of many qualitative and quantitative factors in the manufacturing process. Research indicates that heat processing and feed formulation, especially fat inclusion level, are the factors which have the biggest influence on pellet quality. Strategies, such as the expansion process and fat inclusion restriction or post pellet liquid fat application could be implemented to produce high physical quality pellets. More research is needed to identify which factors have a positive or negative effect on pelleting process and to find new strategies to improve pellet physical quality.

Distribution and Phylogeography of Caryopteris incana (Lamiaceae) Based on Chloroplast DNA Sequences in West Kyushu, Japan

Caryopteris incana is a continental plant, transferred to Japan from continental Asia via a land bridge between the Korean Peninsula and Tsushima Islands during a glacial period. It currently grows wild in West Kyushu, Japan. In a previous study, we investigated the distribution of C. incana in the Tsushima Islands and confirmed the genetic structure of populations by using chloroplast DNA sequence analysis, suggesting that different haplotypes were distributed in the same area. Thus, it seemed that populations of C. incana throughout the Tsushima Islands colonized at different times;each haplotype had remained within its population without mixing. In this study, we conducted fieldwork to construct a detailed distribution map in West Kyushu excluding the Tsushima Islands. Additionally, we confirmed genetic structure of the C. incana population in these areas by using chloroplast DNA sequence analysis to study the intraspecific phylogenetic relationship of C. incana in Japan. We confirmed 37 natural populations in 257 locations throughout West Kyushu excluding the 72 natural populations in the Tsushima Islands. We also confirmed a recent decreasing trend in the number of natural populations in the Nagasaki Mainland. Using the leaves of individuals cultivated from seeds collected from each natural population, we analyzed the chloroplast DNA sequence variations. Among the investigated populations, sequence variations were confirmed in six regions of chloroplast DNA, and those haplotypes were mainly classified into two groups distributed in different areas on the phylogenetic tree. This finding revealed that the common ancestor of C. incana in Japan diverged early into two groups, followed by a fragmentation in population distribution for each area. The haplotype network almost reflected the geographical distribution on haplotypes. Efficacy and Tolerability of Candesartan Cilexetil and Amlodipine in Patients with Poorly Controlled Essential Hypertension

Current treatment guidelines for hypertension in both Europe and the USA stress the importance of aggressive blood pressure control. When monotherapy is not enough to reach treatment targets, there is a need for combination regi-mens that have both high efficacy and good tolerability. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and toler-ability of the combination therapy candesartan and amlodipine in patients with hypertension not satisfactorily controlled by monotherapy. Patients with uncomplicated essential hypertension not satisfactorily controlled by monotherapy, which is candesartan 8 mg or amlodipine 5 mg, were eligible. Candesartan 8 mg and amlodipine 5 mg were given for 12 weeks. 13 patients who received candesartan 8 mg previoursly were assigned to the candesartan group and 8 patients who received amlodipine 5 mg previoursly were assigned to the amlodipine group. Sitting systolic blood pressure (SBP) at baseline was 151.9 ± 11.6 mmHg in the candesartan group, and 154.6 ± 7.6 mmHg in the amlodipine group. Sitting diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was 93.2 ± 13.1 in the candesartan group, and 80.4 ± 14.7 in the amlodipine group. DBP in the amlodipine group was lower than that in the cadesartan group (P = 0.036). After the combination therapy, SBP was significantly reduced in the two groups. DBP showed significant reduction in the amlodipine group. The rate of achieving blood pressure goals was 4% at baseline and significantly increased to 58% after the combination therapy. These results showed that candesartan 8 mg/amlodipine 5 mg are effective lowering blood pressure after 12 weeks in patients not adequately controlled by monotherapy.

The concentration of perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS)and perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)in precipitation collected at both urban and suburban areas of Dalian city in China were analyzed with the purpose to investigate the atmospheric contamination by these chemicals in *** and PFOA were ubiquitous in all the precipitation samples,indicating the extensive pollution by these compounds in the atmosphere in Dalian. In the samples collected on 2006-12-16,the geometric mean value(GM)of PFOS concentration and PFOA concentration were 154.08 ng/L and 21.84 ng/L,*** of PFOS and PFOA in the precipitation in Dalian was much higher than that in Shenyang,an inland city in *** precipitations contained PFOS and PFOA at nearly the same order of *** results in this study offer an indication that wet deposition must be considered as a source of PFCs to the ground environment.

Synthesis of Amine-type Adsorbents with Emulsion Graft Polymerization of 4-hydroxybutyl Acrylate Glycidylether

Radiation induced graft polymerization on polymeric matrix followed by functionalization is widely accepted for the preparation of metal adsorbents. In this paper, a pre-irradiation method was used for emulsion graft polymerization of 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate glycidylether (4-HB) onto polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) nonwoven fabric. The degree of grafting (Dg) which can be calculated by weight increment was determined as a function of reaction time, irradiation dose, and monomer concentration. After 30 kGy irradiation, with 4-HB concentration of 5%, surfactant Span 20 of 0.5% at 40°C for 2 h, the trunk polymer was made grafted at a Dg of 135%. 4-HB-grafted PE/PP nonwoven fabric was modified by ethylenediamine (EDA) in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as a solvent at 60°C. With a Dg of 135%, the amine group density of the adsorbent is 2.8 mmol/g. The adsorption test was carried out by batch experiment in several metal ion solutions, and the removal ratio from the EDA modified adsorbent of the metal ions is in the order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+ > Li+. Compared with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) which is a typical functional monomer for graft polymerization, 4-HB-grafted adsorbent exhibited not only better mechanical property but also higher adsorption capacity of Cu2+ and Pb2+.

Improving the water productivity of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation through water saving irrigation treatments

Rice grows well under certain condition and environment including soil, water and nutrients. Some researches have shown that traditional method with continues flooding need tremendeous amount of water for rice cultivation and gives low water productivity. To increase the water productivity, number of water saving irigation techniques have been studied and applied. Study on effect of number of water irrigation treatments on water productivity of rice was carried out. Eight irrigation treatments were conducted for growing rice in pot experiment i.e. shallow intermittent irrigation (SII), alternate wetting and drying (AWD1, AWD2, AWD3 and AWD4), shallow water depth with wetting and drying (SWD1 and SWD2), and semi-dry cultivation (SDC). The performance of those treatments in terms of agronomic and water parameters was compared to the shallow intermittent irrigation as a control method. The study reveals that the shallow intermittent irrigation needs the highest amount of water compare with other treatments. The lowest amount of water was achieved under the semi-dry cultivation. It could save water up to 18.4% compare to the control treatment. By using the alternate wetting and drying and the shallow water depth with wetting and drying treatments, irrigated water can be reduced up to 13.1% and 5.4%, respectively. The highest grain was obtained by alternate wetting and drying (AWD4) and the semi-dry cultivation yielded the smalest grain. On average the alternate wetting and drying and shallow water depth with wetting and drying increased the grain yield by 22.9% and 17.9%, whereas the semi-dry cultivation reduced the yield up to 14% compare to the shallow water depth treatment. The alternate wetting and drying treatments have significantly improved the water productivity by 41.6%, shallow water depth with wetting and drying increased by 24.2% relative to the shallow intermittent irrigation treatment, whereas the most saving water treatment i.e. the semi-dry cultivation p
