Is Outpatient Follow-Up of Epiploic Appendagitis with NSAIDs Alone and Noantibiotics Possible?

Purpose: To assess the clinical course of patients diagnosed as having “epiploic appendagitis” who are given only NSAIDs without antibiotic treatment. Materials and Methods: Between December 2010 and November 2013, twelve patients were presented to the Emergency Surgery Department, Istanbul Medical Faculty, Istanbul University with abdominal pain and were diagnosed having “epiploic appendagitis”. The diagnoses were made using the information gathered from patients’ complaints, physical examination, biochemical results, and radiologic images (Abdominal X-Ray, Abdominal Ultrasonography [USg], and Contrast-Enhanced Computerized Tomography [CT]). We evaluated and recorded the patients’ age distribution, sex difference, laboratory results, radiologic images, length of hospital stay, and control exams after discharge. Results: Twelve out of 35,574 (0.033%) patients who were presented to our Emergency Surgery Department with abdominal pain and were hospitalized as “epiploic appendagitis”. Of these 12 patients, 7 were male (58.3%), and 5 were female (41.7%). The mean age of the patients was 43.5 (range: 22 to 60). The mean time passed between the beginning of the symptoms and presentation to the hospital was 1 day. The length of hospital stay was 1 to 2 days with a mean of 1.3 days. All patients were followed-up non-invasively under NSAID treatment without antibiotherapy. No complications were observed throughout the hospitalization period. The follow-up period of the patients was between 2 to 31 months with a mean of 16 months. Conclusion: Epiploic appendagitis is a self-limiting, benign disease, but differential diagnosis should be done carefully. Patients who are diagnosed with epiploic appendagitis may be followed-up with NSAIDs alone without hospitalization or antibiotherapy.

In a new world era, where financial systems are being restructured, manufacturing insight reconsidered and ways of doing business is changing, the foundry industry has to adapt herself to the winds of change by placing all her inputs onto the table and reevaluate them to fit into this new era. The inherent strengths of the foundry industry alone would not be enough to fit in this change process, where careful and intelligent operation of the back offcie and the front office of the foundry should come into the picture. The recent global crisis and previous ones have had positive effects on the improvement of foundry competitiveness by opening opportunities to change and "clean the house". The survival strategies, as well as what actions to be taken for growth and maintaining a strong foot print in this complicated atmosphere, is discussed in several headlines. In the long run, survival of individual foundries depends on well managed orchestration by the "decision makers" of each individual component of the foundry. Sustainability of the whole is the sum of survival capabilities of its components and the management of their harmonization.

Analysis of the changes in forest ecosystem functions,structure and composition in the Black Sea region of Turkey

We used geographical information system to analyze changes in forest ecosystem functions, structure and composition in a typical department of forest management area consisting of four forest management planning units in Turkey. To assess these effects over a 25 year period we compiled data from three forest management plans that were made in 1986, 2001 and 2011. Temporal changes in forest ecosystem functions were estimated based on the three pillars of forest sustainability： economics, ecology and socio-culture. We assessed a few indicators such as land-use and forest cover, forest types,tree species, development stage, stand age classes, crown closure, growing stock and its increment, and timber biomass. The results of the case study suggested a shift in forest values away from economic values toward ecological and socio-cultural values over last two planning periods. Forest ecosystem structure improved, due mainly to increasing forest area, decreasing non-forest areas（especially in settlement and agricultural areas）, forestation on forest openings, rehabilitation of degraded forests, conversion of even-aged forests to uneven-aged forests and conversion of coppice forests to high forests with greater growing stock increments. There were also favorable changes in forest management planning approaches.

Entropy Correlations and Entanglement of a Superconducting Charge Qubit in a Resonant Cavity in the Presence of Noise

We study the dynamics of the entropy correlations and entanglement in a system of interaction of a superconducting charge qubit with a single-mode resonant cavity subject to noise considered as two-state random phase telegraph noise. We show that although the noise has an apparent suppressing effect on the evolution of the entropies of the qubit and the field and also on the entanglement in the system, the entropy exchange between the qubit and the field is independent of it during the time evolution of the system.

Control of Sudden Death of Entanglement by Transient Effects

We investigate the properties of entanglement between an isolated atom and a Jaynes-Cummings atom in the presence of transient effects. These effects are due to the modulation of the atom-field coupling whose explicit time-dependence is considered for the case of the linear sweep. We show that the sudden death of entanglement can be controlled by the transient effects. These effects can suppress the sudden death of entanglement in time.

Tribological properties of platinum/ruthenium/nitrogen doped diamond-like carbon thin films deposited with different negative substrate biases

The platinum/ruthenium/nitrogen doped diamond‐like carbon(PtRuN‐DLC)thin films were deposited on Si substrates via DC magnetron sputtering by varying negative substrate *** tribological performance of the PtRuN‐DLC films was systematically investigated using ball‐on‐disc microtribological *** Raman results showed that the increased negative substrate bias significantly increased the number of sp3 bonds in the PtRuN‐DLC films as a result of the increased kinetic energies of impinging *** adhesion strength of the PtRuN‐DLC films apparently decreased with increased negative substrate bias due to the promoted residual stress in the *** tribological results clearly revealed that the increased negative substrate bias decreased the friction and wear of the PtRuN‐DLC films by improving the sp3 bonded cross‐linking structures of the *** can be concluded that the PtRuN‐DLC films could effectively prevent their underlying Si substrates from wear as the negative substrate bias had a significant influence on the tribological properties of the PtRuN‐DLC films.

Effects of platinum content on tribological properties of platinum/nitrogen doped diamond-like carbon thin films deposited via magnetron sputtering

Platinum(Pt)and nitrogen(N)were co-incorporated in diamond-like carbon(DLC)thin films using a magnetron sputtering system to form PtN-DLC thin films for tribological *** Pt content in the PtN-DLC films prepared on Si substrates was controlled by varying RF power applied to a Pt target at a fixed N2 flow *** tribological properties of the PtN-DLC films were investigated with respect to the Pt content in the *** uncoated Si substrate surface tested against a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter had significant abrasive and fatigue wear,while no significant wear was found on the N-DLC coated sample surface,indicating that the N-DLC film effectively prevented its underlying Si substrate from ***,the incorporation of Pt in the N-DLC films reduced the wear resistance of the films by degrading sp3-bonded cross-linking structures of the films so that significant wear tracks were found on the surfaces of the PtN-DLC ***,the increased radio frequency(RF)power applied to the Pt target decreased the wear resistance of the PtN-DLC films as a result of the increased Pt content.

Relation of eye dominancy with color vision discrimination performance ability in normal subjects

AIM:To evaluate the performance of dominant eye(DE) for color vision discrimination ability among the medical students with normal color ***:Total of 50 students studying at Baskent University Faculty of Medicine,including 31 males(62%) and 19 females(38%),with visual acuity of 20/20 and without congenital color vision deficiency(CCVD) evaluated by Ishihara pseudoisochromatic plate test(IPPT) were recruited for this prospective comparative study upon their voluntary *** was determined by the gündogan *** color discrimination ability was examined with the FarnsworthMunsell 100 hue(FM100) *** was applied by two days interval to all subjects for the three times while two eyes(TE),right eye(RE) and left eye(LE) were seeing for detecting red-green(r/g),blue-yellow(b/y) local color spectral regions error *** error scores were evaluated for both in DE and non-dominant(NDE).P values below 0.05 were considered to be statistically ***:The students aged 21.18±2.52 years(mean±SD).Without sex difference the RE and the LE dominancy were found 22(44%) and 28(56%) respectively and FM 100 test total error scores of DE in both r/g-b/y regions were found without gender difference 24.12±14.70,34.68±18.95,*** the NDE in both,r/gb/y regions error scores without gender difference were 32.20±19.21,36.24±17.56,*** difference of total error scores between the DE and NDE was found as 58.80±29.92,68.44±*** statistical differences among the DE and the NDE in r/g local region and total error scores were found significant in both genders(Pgher sensitivity of the r/g local color spectral *** conclude that DE has priority in r/g color spectral region,probably including inhibition of NDE.
