Socio-economic determinants for malaria transmission risk in an endemic primary health centre in Assam, India

Background:Malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Northeast *** there is limited information available on the potential influence of socio-economic variables on malaria risk,the present study was conducted to assess the influence of demographic factors,the socio-economic status,and knowledge,awareness and education on malaria ***:Demographics,malaria knowledge and socio-economic variables were collected in four randomly selected health sub-centres of the Orang primary health centre in the Udalguri district,Assam and the association of malaria occurrence with different variables were *** trend of malaria occurrence for different income groups,proximity to health centres and number of mosquito bites per day was also determined using the chi-square *** risk(RR)for gender,house type,knowledge and use of bed nets was determined using Katz ***:Out of the 71 household heads interviewed,70.4%(50/71)were *** half(54.9%,39/71)of the participants had a history of malaria in the last two years,of which 64.1%(25/39)were males,while 35.9%(14/39)were females(χ^(2)=5.13;p=0.02;RR=1.79).Of the total population surveyed,49.3%lived in bamboo houses and 35.2%lived at a distance of>3 km from the nearest health *** number of participants who had a history of malaria decreased with an increasing monthly income(p<0.0001).Malaria occurrence was higher among the households living in bamboo houses(69.2%),as compared to Kucha houses(20.5%)and Pucca houses(10.3%).No significant association was observed between education level and malaria occurrence(p=0.93).The participants who did not use bed nets regularly reported a high occurrence of malaria infection as compared to those who used bed nets everyday(p<0.0001).Conclusions:Lower income,house type,distance to health sub-centre,knowledge and awareness about malaria,number of mosquito bites per day and use of bed nets were positively associated with malaria occ

Molecular Engineering of Naphthalimide Methylcyclohexane Luminogen:Unraveling J^(*)-Aggregation Pattern and Sensing Melamine in Aqueous Media

Naphthalimide methylcyclohexane(NMICY)luminogen that features molecular conformation-directed aggregation-induced emission was prepared,and its pure equatorial conformer was isolated and wellcharacterized via various techniques,including single-crystal X-ray diffraction(SC-XRD)*** NMICY,the methyl cyclohexane substituent adapted the most stable chair conformation,preventing intermolecularπ-πinteractions among the naphthalimide *** analysis of the self-assembly behavior indicated that an uncommon J^(*)-aggregation pattern was predominant for NMICY that exhibited∼450 nm emission in crystal as well as in the aggregated state[λmax=455 nm,фPL=23.22%,fw=99.9%in water or water-dimethylformamide mixture].NMICY self-assembled into cube-shaped 2D-nanoarchitecture as characterized by fieldemission scanning electron microscopy,atomic force microscopy,and dynamic light scattering(Zavg=143 nm,∼20 nm height)studies while also displaying unique optical properties in the aggregated *** supramolecular self-assembly and aggregated state structure-property relationship in aqueous media of NMICY were optimized,and a facile strategy for the detection of melamine in milk and an aqueous solution of milk powder is reported with a limit of detection value of 0.184 ppm(milk)and 0.101 ppm(milk powder),achieved via the rare acceptor-excited photoinduced electron transfer ***,a smartphone-based,portable,and uncomplicated sensing platform was developed that simplifies the melamine detection process.

Designing of tragacanth gum-poly [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide and poly(acrylamide) based hydrogels for drug delivery and wound dressing applications

Bioactive tragacanth gum(TG)was functionalized by covalent crosslinking of poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide(PMEDSAH)to design network structure in form of hydrogel wound dressings(HWD).These copolymers were encapsulated with antibiotic drug vancomycin to enhance wound healing potential of the *** copolymers were characterized by SEM,AFM,FTIR,13C NMR,XRD,and TGA-DSC *** demonstrated uneven heterogeneous morphology and AFM revealed rough surface of *** of synthetic component into HD was confirmed by FTIR and 13C *** dressings absorbed 8.491.03 g/g simulated wound fluid and exhibited non-hemolytic(3.70.02%hemolytic potential)and antioxidant(37.421.54%free radical scavenging in DPPH assay)*** required 35.05.0 mN detachment force to get it detach from the mucosal surface during mucoadhesive *** strength was found to be 1.880.13 N/mm2 during mechanical stability *** dressings were permeable to O2/H2O and impermeable to *** of drug vancomycin occurred through non-Fickian diffusion mechanism and release profile was best described by Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic ***,these results revealed that these hydrogels could be explored as materials for hydrogel wound dressings.

Electrochemical performance of a symmetric supercapacitor device designed using laser-induced multilayered graphene

This study demonstrates a facile and economical approach for fabricating laser-induced graphene（LIG）, which results in improved electrochemical performance. Polyimide polymer was used as a starting material for LIG synthesis and irradiated under ambient conditions using a CO2laser. The prepared LIG samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and FTIR, which validated the formation of multilayered graphene containing sp2 hybridized C=C bonds. The FE-SEM revealed three-dimensional sheetlike structures, while HR-TEM images displayed lattice planes with an interplanar spacing of approximately 0.33 nm, corresponding to the（002） plane of graphene. The electrochemical performance of the as-prepared LIG samples demonstrated a remarkable areal specific capacitance（CA） of 51 mF cm-2(170 F g-1) at 1 mA cm-2(3.3 A g-1) in a three-electrode configuration with 1M KOH as the aqueous electrolyte. The LIG electrodes produced an energy density of ～3.5 μWh cm-2and a power density of ～350 μW cm-2,demonstrating significant energy storage capabilities. Additionally, the electrodes exhibited excellent cyclic stability, retaining 87%of their specific capacitance after 3 000 cycles at 1 mA/cm2. The symmetric supercapacitor fabricated with LIG electrodes and the tested 1M KOH electrolyte showed a specific capacitance of 23 mF cm-2and maintained excellent retention after 10,000 cycles,showing LIG's potential for supercapacitor applications.

Renewable energy resources, policies and gaps in BRICS countries and the global impact

This paper presents comparative yet extensive analysis of existing non-conventional renewable resources, energy policies and gaps in BRICS countries. An intelligent transformation to green economy to maintain natural resources is noted. Brazil has stable energy policies and is the leading producer of biofuels following hydropower until 2014 but supported wind and solar power development by tendering specific tariffs for energy generation from solar and wind. Russia needs improvement in its legal and regulatory framework with more incentives in energy policies. China is improving upon wind and hydropower but it needs strong policy measures to put cap on increased CO2 emissions. India needs revision in energy policy and requires extra incentives and consumer specific energy policies for research-infrastructure and energy generation technologies. South Africa requires lessons to increase renewable energy and reduce coal mining. Moreover, BRICS countries need to redefine their energy policies based upon their existing geographical, economical, societal and environmental conditions which will help in shaping global energy policies and more financial stability. This paper recognizes the potential of BRICS to reshape the global system paralleled with minimizing CO2 emissions. The concerted role of BRICS needs to be recognized as the leading contributor of global renewable capacity where the developed world is geared and busy to address the environmental issues.

Exogenous Peroxidase Mitigates Cadmium Toxicity, Enhances Rhizobial Population and Lowers Root Knot Formation in Rice Seedlings

Soil cadmium (Cd) causes toxicity and oxidative stress, alters biochemical processes and rootknot formation in rice. Irrigation of exogenous peroxidase (POX) together with its co-substrate H2O2(POXRice + H2O2), is likely to have protective effect upon the biochemical and nodular changes in ricegrown in Cd-rich soil. Exposure to Cd concentration of 1.00 mg/L increased oxidative stress, loss of cellviability, electrolyte leakage and root knot formation, whereas it significantly lowered the chlorophyll leveland rhizobium growth in rice. Irrigation of exogenous POXRice + H2O2 to Cd-stressed rice seedlingsreversed the Cd-induced alterations in rice to levels similar in control (non-stressed) seedlings. Resultsprovided strong evidence of exogenous POXRice + H2O2-mediated reversal and restoration of physiologicaland biochemical processes as well as increased resistance of rice seedlings to root knot *** with POXRice + H2O2 appeared to contribute towards bringing normoxic conditions in the otherwisehypoxic soil environment by enhancing the O2 in pot-experiments due to reduced Cd uptake, enhancedmineral homeostasis of essential elements viz. P, Fe, Mo, Mg and Mn for maintenance of root architecturedamaged by lipid peroxidation and reduction in oxidative stress by reducing Cd-induced reactive oxygenspecies generation. Therefore, the mitigation of Cd-toxicity in rice through this novel approach appeared tobe a promising mode to limit Cd-uptake, modulate protective and tolerance mechanisms for sustainablerice yield in Cd-contaminated rice-croplands and prevent nematode attack in rice, however, more detailedstudies are needed prior to large scale applications.
