Impact of surface roughness,surface charge,and temperature on sandstone wettability alteration by nanoparticles

The wettability of rocks affects the balance between capillary and viscous forces during multiphase flow through porous media,which in turn determines the fluid displacement process governing the recovery of oil from subsurface *** this work,the mechanism of wettability reversal of aged synthetic sandstones by metal oxide nanoparticles(SiO_(2) and Al_(2)O_(3))was investigated with particular focus on the impact of surface roughness,zeta potential,and *** synthetic surfaces were prepared from powders of Berea sandstone with known grain size ranges and their average roughness and roughness ratio were obtained from the 3D surface reconstruction of their microscope *** surface was subsequently aged in Permian crude oil to alter its *** surfaces with larger grain sizes and lower surface roughness ratios,the lower capillary pressure allowed stronger oil/surface interactions,leading to enhanced *** wettability alteration effects of nanoparticles were then examined through real-time top view imaging and dynamic front view contact angle *** negatively charged SiO_(2) nanoparticles rapidly reversed the sandstone wettability,indicating their potential applicability as wettability alteration *** contrast,the positively charged Al_(2)O_(3) counterpart caused no wettability *** mechanism of wettability alteration was further studied by microscale interaction analyses and nanoscale transmission electron *** nanoparticles were only a few nanometers large,the microscale roughness had a negligible effect on the wettability ***,the combined effect of van der Waals dispersion forces and surface-charge-induced electrostatic forces were recognized as the two key factors affecting the wettability of sandstone *** interactions may be curbed at elevated temperatures due to a decrease in the zeta potential and colloidal stability of the particles.

Microstructure evolution of nanostructured ferritic alloy with and without Cr3C2c oated SiC at high temperatures

This work focuses on fundamental understanding of microstructure evolution of nanostructured ferritic alloy(NFA) and 25 vol.% Cr3C2 coated Si C(Cr3C2@Si C)-NFA composite during spark plasma sintering at950°C and the following thermal treatment at 1000°C. A unique bi-phase microstructure with distinct Cr-rich and Si-rich phases has been observed for the 25 vol.% Cr3C2@Si C-NFA composite, while for the NFA sample, the traditional large grain microstructure remains. Grain sizes are significantly smaller for the25 vol.% Cr3C2@Si C-NFA composite compared to those for the pure NFA, which can be attributed to the presence of grain boundary phases in the composite sample. During the thermal treatment, microstructure features can be directly correlated with the dissolution kinetics and phase diagrams calculated using Thermo-Calc/DICTRA/PRISMA~?.

Seismic behavior of slab-structural wall junction of RC building

In high seismic zone regions, slender reinforced concrete structural walls are commonly used in high-rise buildings as a main lateral load resisting element. These walls are very effective in limiting the lateral drift of the building due to their large in-plane stiffness. However, the presence of floor slabs influences the behavior of the shear wall. Also, the current design requirements do not account for the presence of floor slabs. To understand the behavior of wall-slab junctions and address the shortcomings of the current design requirements, the influence of two parameters, namely(a) aspect ratio and(b) longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the behavior is studied numerically. It is observed that the presence of floor slabs at different levels tends to partition the wall into squat wall panels between two consecutive floors. The wall-slab junctions show large stress concentrations arising from the strut action in the squat panels. It is also observed that the floor slabs can get significantly damaged near the wall-slab junction for lower vertical reinforcement ratios in the wall. Thus, the current codeprescribed minimum reinforcement in shear walls is not sufficient and needs to be revisited at for improved performance.

Optimum lateral extent of soil domain for dynamic SSI analysis of RC framed buildings on pile foundations

This article describes a novel approach for deciding optimal horizontal extent of soil domain to be used for finite element based numerical dynamic soil structure interaction(SSI)*** model for a 12 storied building frame,supported on pile foundation-soil system,is developed in the finite element based software framework,*** different structure-foundation configurations are analyzed under different ground motion *** extent of soil domain,along with the soil properties,were varied exhaustively for a particular structural *** on the reduction in the variation of acceleration response at different locations in the SSI system(quantified by normalized root mean square error,NRMSE),the optimum lateral extent of the soil domain is prescribed for various structural widths,soil types and peak ground acceleration levels of ground *** to the past studies,error estimation analysis shows that the relationships prescribed in the present study are credible and more inclusive of the various factors that influence *** relationships can be readily applied for deciding upon the lateral extent of the soil domain for conducting precise SSI analysis with reduced computational time.

The shape of liquid interfaces can be precisely controlled using electrowetting,an actuation mechanism which has been widely used for tunable optofluidic micro-optical components such as lenses or *** have expanded the considerable flexibility inherent in electrowetting actuation to realize a variable optofluidic slit,a tunable and reconfigurable two-dimensional aperture with no mechanically moving *** optofluidic slit is formed by precisely controlled movement of the liquid interfaces of two highly opaque ink *** 1.5mmlong slit aperture,with controllably variable discrete widths down to 45 mm,may be scanned across a length of 1.5mmwith switching times between adjacent slit positions of less than 120 *** addition,for a fixed slit aperture position,the width may be tuned to a minimum of 3 mmwith high uniformity and linearity over the entire slit *** compact,purely fluidic device offers an electrically controlled aperture tuning range not achievable with extant mechanical alternatives of a similar size.

This work focuses on irradiation behaviors of a novel silicon carbide and carbon coated nanostructured ferritic alloy(SiC-C@NFA)composite for potential applications as a cladding and structural material for next generation nuclear *** SiC-C@NFA samples were irradiated with 1 MeV Kr ions up to 10 dpa at 300 and 4500 *** and defect evolution were studied in-situ at the IVEM-Tandem facility at Argonne National *** effects of ion irradiation on various phases such asα-ferrite matrix,(Fe,Cr)_(7)C_(3),and(Ti,W)C precipitates were ***α-ferrite matrix showed a continuous increase in dislocation density along with spatial ordering of dislocation loops(or loop strings)at>5 *** size of the dislocation loops at 450℃was larger than that at 300℃.The nucleation and growth of new(Ti,W)C precipitates inα-ferrite grains were enhanced with the ion dose at 450℃.This study provides new insight into the irradiation resistance of the SiC-C@NFA system.

Cascading optofluidic phase modulators for performance enhancement in refractive adaptive optics

We discuss the implementation and performance of an adaptive optics(AO)system that uses two cascaded deformable phase plates(DPPs),which are transparent optofluidic phase modulators,mimicking the common woofer/tweeter-type astronomical AO *** of the DPPs has 25 electrodes forming a keystone pattern best suited for the correction of low-order and radially symmetric modes;the second device has 37 hexagonally packed electrodes better suited for high-order *** also present simulation results and experimental validation for a new open-loop control strategy enabling simultaneous control of both DPPs,which ensures optimum correction for both large-amplitude low-order,and complex combinations of low-and high-order *** resulting system can reproduce Zernike modes up to the sixth radial order with stroke and fidelity up to twice better than what is attainable with either of the DPPs *** performance of the new AO configuration is also verified in a custom-developed fluorescence microscope with sensorless aberration correction.
