Dioxin sources to the aquatic environment: Re-assessing dioxins in industrial processes and possible emissions to the aquatic

Releases of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/PCDFs)from industrial or thermal processes to the aquatic environment are considered small compared to emissions to air ***,industrial processes have occasionally released PCDD/PCDFs into local aquatic environments..PCDD/PCDF formation and releases were re-examined based on investigations conducted before the introduction of water quality regulations in *** was given to PCDD/PCDF formation in various industrial processes such as the manufacture of acetylene and *** acetylene production,PCDD/PCDFs are formed in the oxidative process using chlorine to remove impurities,with PCDFs formed with the particular chlorine pattern with 1,2,7,8-TetraCDF,2,3,7,8-TetraCDFs and 1,2,3,4,7,8-HexaCDF as maker congeners and low PCDDs *** indicates that acetylene production residues contain *** caprolactam production,formation of PCDD/PCDFs in the cyclohexane photonitrosation process has been confirmed and the emission factor for PCDD/PCDF releases to water from for caprolactam manufacture was estimated with an emission factor for releases to the aquatic environment of 0.25±0.04 mgTEQ/t.A range of additional processes with PCDD/PCDF release were also found during the Japanese ***,the formation processes were placed in two categories:(A)chemical synthesis processes and (B)flue gas treatment of high temperature *** final effluent water met the PCDD/PCDF limits by applying advanced treatment for PCDD/PCDF removal such as activated carbon *** survey shows that industrial processes involving elemental chlorine or other processes that facilitate chlorination or use chlorinating chemicals should be assessed and controlled for PCDD/PCDFs and other unintentional POPs releases to *** such surveys,chemicals from the chlorine and organochlorine industry should also be assessed for PCDD/PCDFs and other unintentional POPs contamination as pr

Conversion of producer gas using NiO/SBA-15 obtained with different synthesis methods

In this study,NiO/SBA-15 was prepared by both direct and post synthesis *** images revealed that NiO particles aggregated in NiO/SBA-15 obtained with post synthesis method,regardless of NiO ***,NiO particles were monodispersed in NiO/SBA-15 with a NiO loading of less than 15 wt%by using the direct synthesis *** this case,NiO particles aggregated when NiO loading was over 20 wt%.TPR analysis verified that with direct synthesis method the location boundary of NiO particles on outer and pore surface could be observed clearly,whereas that could not observed in the case of post synthesis *** indicates that the type of synthesis method displays significant effect on the location of NiO particles dispersed into the *** gas conversion was carried out using NiO/SBA-15 as catalysts,which were synthesized with different synthesis *** gas conversion including methanation occurred at low temperature(i.e.,300-400℃)and the reverse water gas shift(RWGS)reaction at hightemperature(i.e.,400-900℃).High temperatures facilitated CO conversion to CO with CO selectivity close to 100%,regardless of the synthesis method of the used *** low temperatures the dispersion type of NiO particles affectedthe CO,conversion reaction,i.e.,monodispersed Ni0 particles gave a CO selectivity of close to 100%,similar to thatobtained at high *** aggregated NiO particles resuled in a CO selectivity of less than 100%owing to CH,formation,regardless of synthesis method of ***,NiO/SBA-15 obtained with direct synthesis methodfavored RWGS reaction because of high CO ***-15 obtained with post synthesis method is suited formethanation because of high CH selectivity,and the conversion of CO,to CHa through methanation increased withincreasing NiO loading.

Diabetes mellitus significantly affects the male reproduction and sexual function. In the present study, we investigated the diabetes-induced dysfunction of seminal vesicles （SVs） in the diabetes-rat model and the role of antioxidants. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes after 4 weeks caused smaller size of the organs, hypercontractility, histological abnormalities, increased concentrations of malondialdehyde in the serum and tissue, overexpression of oxidative stress markers, and cleaved caspase-3 as identified by immunohistochemistry in the SVs. In addition, diabetes resulted in deceased levels of serum testosterone and no newborns after the mating studies. Antioxidants significantly normalized all the above parameters, except for the severely decreased serum testosterone levels and the negative outcome of the mating studies. The present study gives evidence for the important role of diabetes-induced oxidative stress in the function and structure of these androgen-dependent organs. Antioxidants may be a promising supplementary therapy for diabetic male patients to alleviate ejaculatory disorders but alone is not efficient treatment for the mitigation of infertility.

Development and Social Implementation of Smartphone App Nige-Tore for Improving Tsunami Evacuation Drills: Synergistic Effects Between Commitment and Contingency

This research explored how we can improve tsunami evacuation behavior,which has been a major social issue since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and *** introduce Nige-Tore,a smartphone app for supporting tsunami evacuation drills,which was developed within an interdisciplinary research ***-Tore serves as an effective interface tool that successfully visualizes the dynamic interactions between human actions(evacuation behavior)and natural phenomena(tsunami behavior).Drill participants can check,on their smartphone,the estimated inundation area of the approaching tsunami,along with their own current evacuation *** results of real-world trials using NigeTore show that the app is more powerful than conventional devices and methods that have been used in tsunami evacuation training,such as hazard maps and traditional drills that do not make use of any apps,because Nige-Tore provides an interface that enables commitment and contingency thinking—which at first glance appear to represent different orientations—to not only coexist but to synergize.‘‘Commitment’’(devotion or involvement)refers to the act of immersing oneself in and viewing as absolute one particular scenario or its potential to be actualized,given conditions in which infinite scenarios may be actualized,depending on the interactions between human systems and natural systems.‘‘Contingency’’thinking(an accidental or incidental state)refers to the act of relativizing and separating oneself from any particular scenario or its potential to be actualized,given the same *** synergistic effect of‘‘commitment’’and‘‘contingency’’thinking also expands people’s capacity to cope with unexpected and unforeseen events.

Synergistic Integration of Detailed Meteorological and Community Information for Evacuation from Weather-Related Disasters: Proposal of a ‘‘Disaster Response Switch’’

Meteorological information used for disaster prevention has developed rapidly in terms of both type and *** latest forecasting models can predict weather with very high resolutions that can characterize disaster risk at the local ***,this development can lead to an overdependency on the information and a wait-and-see attitude by the *** the same time,residents share and use various types of information for disaster response,such as local conditions,in addition to official disaster *** research in Japan verified the practicality and efficiency of synergistically integrating these types of information by examining actual evacuation *** current numerical forecasting models sufficiently identify locality from the viewpoint of various administrative scales such as prefectures,municipalities,and school districts,but the improvements to these models have failed to improve residents’judgment in successful evacuation *** therefore analyzed the relationship between meteorological information and residents’disaster response and confirmed that they were strongly correlated and were contributing factors in preventing *** revealed differences between a community’s disaster prevention culture and the disaster information *** led us to propose a new concept in community disaster prevention that we call the‘‘disaster response switch,’’which can serve as a data-driven risk management tool for communities when used in combination with advanced meteorological disaster information.

Communication Scheduling with Diversity for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Using Local 5G

The use of unmanned aircraft systems(UAS)for critical public service missions by public organizations,local governments,and social users is *** radio transmission by unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)is indispensable in these *** of the standards suitable for UAV wireless communications is local ***,to introduce local 5G into a UAS,several problems specific to UASes must be *** include the deterioration of the signal-to-noise ratio due to topography and obstacles,the uncertainty of the communication environment due to the movement of multiple UAVs,and the limitation of the frequency *** address these problems and to introduce local 5G into the UAS,we propose a novel communication scheduling *** method incorporates transmission modes with *** evaluations shows that total data volumes increase by 1.9~3 times with the proposed scheduling method compared with transmission without diversity or efficient scheduling.

Depolymerization of polyamide 6 in hydrophilic ionic liquids

Polyamide 6 underwent an efficient depolymerization in hydrophilic ionic liquids under microwave irradiation at 300C. The depolymerization completed within 60 min. Caprolactam was readily separated by simple extraction procedure and the ionic liquids were recovered and reused for several times. Addition of catalytic amounts of DMAP(N,N-dimethylaminopyridine) promoted the depolymerization *** present improved procedure provides a method to avoid direct distillation procedure, which consumes energy for the separation of caprolactam from ionic liquids. Although some contamination of ionic liquids was observed, the present procedure provides a new possibility for the use of ionic liquids for plastic chemical recycling from the viewpoint of development of an energy-saving methodology. Use of solubility switchable ionic liquids is also examined to explore a possibility for better separation although depolymerization did not work well.

Numerical Study of the Effects of the Secondary Diaphragm and Contact Surface in Expansion Tubes

The interaction of the shock reflected at a secondary diaphragm with the primary contact in six cases, i.e. the strengths and shapes of the contact surface are different, were explored by numerical study. The influences of the strength and shape of the contact on the developing wave pattern and the quality of the test gas are illustrated by many kinds of figures (e.g. the time-distance diagrams of the acoustic impedance contours on the axis, the acoustic impedance contours, and the time histories of pilot and static pressures).
