Laboratory and field experiments were performed to evaluate the pathogenicity of an isolate of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae to the two sympatrically occurring weevil species, Cylas formicarius and Euscepes postfasciatus. In the laboratory bioassays, suspension of conidia, ≥106 CFU/mL, caused mortalities > 80% on adults of both weevils in seven days after inoculation. It took longer time 20 days for grain formulation of the isolate adhered on rice grains of ≥5 g/m2 (107 CFU/g) to attain similar mortalities of E. postfasciatus, but no evident mortality was obtained in C. formicarius. The grain formulation was thus less effective on C. formicarius than the suspension. Field trials were carried out over two years from 2013 to 2014, in which adults of E. postfasciatus were released two times during the field experiments for enhancement of damage on plants by this weevil, whereas the other weevil species was left to naturally invade the experimental plots by flying. The results of the experiments revealed in both years that two applications of the isolate in grain formulation, equivalent to 50 kg/hectare, sprayed manually over the ground surface reduced the infestation of plants and tuber damage by weevils of both species as much as the conventional chemical insecticide applications. The occurrences of weevils at harvest were not significantly different among treatments. The potential and possible uses of the fungus are discussed for the management of these two weevil species.

The pinning of quantized magnetic vortices in superconducting YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ)(YBCO or Y123)thin films with Y_(2)BaCuO_(5)(Y211)nanoinclusions have been investigated over wide temperature range(4.2-77 K).The concentration of Y211 nanoinclusions has been systematically varied inside YBCO thin films prepared by laser ablation technique using surface modified target *** pinning force density values(Fp∼0.5 TNm^(−3)at 4.2 K,9 T)have been observed for the YBCO film with moderate concentration of Y211 nanoinclusions(3.6 area%on ablation target).In addition,uniform enhancement in critical current density(J_(c))was observed in the angular dependent J_(c)measurement of YBCO+Y211 nanocomposite films.Y211 nanoinclusions have been found to be very efficient in pinning the quantized vortices thereby enhancing the in‐field J_(c)values over a wide range of *** the concentration of Y211 secondary phase into Y123 film matrix results into agglomeration of Y211 phase and observed as increased Y211 nanoparticle *** larger secondary phase nanoparticles are not as efficient pinning centers at lower temperatures as they are at higher temperatures due to substantial reduction of the coherence length at lower *** of the temperature dependence of J_(c)for YBCO+Y211 nanocomposite films has been conducted and possible vortex pinning mechanism in these nanocomposite films has been discussed.

The artificial endocrine pancreas is a feedback control instrument that regulates insulin delivery on a minute-by-minute basis according to measured blood glucose levels. Only one type of bedsidetype artificial endocrine pancreas is now available in Japan: STG-22 (Nikkiso Co. Ltd., Japan). In the insulin infusion algorithm, insulin is infused on the basis ofits proportional and derivative actions, to blood glucose concentrations with a constant time delay. The bedside-type artificial endocrine pancreas has been proven to be useful not only as a therapeutic tool for diabetes mellitus, but also as an elegant research tool for investigating the pathophysiology of the disease, by using the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic glucose clamp technique. The wearable type of closed-loop system has been developed recently. The breakthrough is the establishment of a needle-type glucose sensor. The development of closed-loop glycemic control systems that enable long-term physiological regulation has focused on implantable devices. Much effort has been expended to realize these devices.

Spatial and Temporal Changes of Floating Population in China Between 1990 and 2000

By studying the county-level census data of 1990 and 2000, we analyzed the spatial and temporal changes in the floating population in China between 1990 and 2000. The results of the analysis revealed the following characteris- tics. First, the spatial distribution of the migrants (referred to as 'floaters' in this paper) became increasingly concentrated in the cities during the 1990s. Second, the number of floaters increased rapidly during this period, and the area in which the floaters settled expanded quickly into four population explosion belts: the coast, the Changjiang River Delta, the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and national border belts. Third, the number of inter-province floaters increased rapidly and exceeded that of intra-province floaters in the 1990s. In addition, to obtain a quantitative relationship between the number of floaters and 10 socio-economic variables by using statistical methods and also to find the chiefly important pulling factors of the migration destination, the authors selected approximately 100 cities with the largest population of floaters. Consequently, we found that four factors-GDP, passenger trips per 10,000 persons, per capita GDP and foreign direct investment-could provide an explanation for 83.7% of the number of floaters in 2000. The GDP showed the highest correlation with the number of floaters, suggesting that a highly developed economy is the most important factor that attracts floaters. Furthermore, a fairly close relationship between the number of floaters and the GDP was also found in 2000 for all the counties.

A synthetic polymer with a laminin-apatite composite layer on its surface would be useful as a percutaneous device. The preparation of such a composite was attempted in the present study using poly（ ethylene terephthalate ）（PET） and polyethylene （PE） as the synthetic polymer. PET and PE plates and those pretreated with an oxygen plasma were alternately dipped in calcium and phosphate ion solutions, and then immersed in a metastable calcium phosphate solution supplemented with laminin （ LCP solution ）. The PET and PE plates pretreated with an oxygen plasma formed a uniform and continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. In contrast, the PET and PE plates that had not been pretreated with an oxygen plasma did not form a continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. The hydrophilic functional groups on the PET and PE surfaces introduced by the plasma treatment were responsible for the successful laminin-apatite coruposite coating.

Distribution of Sm and Ce in mice was investigated after inhalation exposure to their oxide particles of 5 μm diameter and 15 mg/*** and Ce were mainly distributed in lung,their concentrations decreased with passing time,and their concentrations in lung were correlated with exposure *** of Ce were lower than that of Sm in each *** was also distributed in the other organs and bone but Ce was scarcely *** results suggest that the behaviors of Sm and Ce inhaled were different,although their chemical properties are similar.

The size distribution of a muck pile depends not on only the blasting standard but also on the mechanical properties,joint system,and crack density of the rock mass. As,the cracks in the rock masses are especially heavily developed at the limestone quar- ries in Japan,they,along with the joints,have a large impact on the effects of blasting, such as the size of the muck ***,if the joint system and/or crack density in a rock mass can be determined and quantitatively evaluated,the blasting operation can be conducted more effectively,efficiently and ***,guidelines for designing ap- propriate blasting standards based on the rock mass conditions have not yet been scien- tifically ***,blasting tests were conducted on different mines and faces, under different geological conditions and blasting standards,in order to determine the im- pacts of each factor on the effects of *** the results of a series of blast- ing tests and described the impacts of geological conditions on the size of the muck pile produced by blast.

Restoring urbanization process in China in the 1990s by using non-radiance-calibrated DMSP/OLS nighttime light imagery and statistical data

Since current administrative unit-based urban land area statistical data in China lack enough spatial information, the urbanization process re- search at large scale cannot be effectively supported. Based on the current administrative unit-based urban land area statistical data in China, a new approach to quickly and cheaply derive urban land information from the non-radiance-calibrated Defense Meteoro- logical Satellite Program/ Operational Linescan Sys- tem (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light imagery is pre- sented in this paper. With the new approach, the ur- ban pattern information in China in 1992, 1996 and 1998 was derived with the urbanization processes in China in the 1990s restored by using the non-ra- diance-calibrated DMSP/OLS nighttime imagery. The accuracy assessment based on the statistical data showed that the relative error between the derived total urban land area and the statistical data at na- tional scale was less than 2% in 1992, and less than 1% in 1996 and 1998, and the maximum relative er- ror at province scale do not exceed 10% with most of the provinces less than 3%. In addition, the urban patterns derived from the high-resolution Landsat TM imagery were compared with those from the DMSP/ OLS data. The results showed that the urban pattern characteristics derived from DMSP/OLS were basi-cally coincident with those from TM imagery with the total accuracy of about 80%. Thus it can be seen that our restored urbanization process in China in the 1990s by using the non-radiance DMSP/OLS night- time imagery can be accepted and can represent the actual urban development in China at that time on the whole.

There is no standard treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from gastric cancer.A novel multidisciplinary treatment combining bidirectional chemotherapy [neoadjuvant intraperitoneal-systemic chemotherapy protocol (NIPS)],peritonectomy,hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) and early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been *** this article,we assess the indications,safety and eff icacy of this treatment,review the relevant studies and introduce our *** aims of NIPS are stage reduction,the eradication of peritoneal free cancer cells,and an increased incidence of complete cytoreduction (CC-0) for PC.A complete response after NIPS was ob-tained in 15 (50%) out of 30 patients with ***,a signif icantly high incidence of CC-0 can be obtained in patients with a peritoneal cancer index (PCI) ≤ *** a multivariate analysis to examine the survival benef it,CC-0 and NIPS are identified as significant indicators of a good ***,the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with peritonectomy and perioperative chemotherapy make stringent patient selection *** best indications for multidisciplinary therapy are localized PC (PCI≤6) from resectable gastric cancer that can be completely removed during a *** and complete cytoreduction are essential treatment modalities for improving the survival of patients with PC from gastric cancer.
