Locomotor activity rhythm in the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica elvers

Under artificial LD cycles （6, 12, 18 L）, the elvers of Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, showed a 24 h cycle of locomotor activity rhythm being most active at light transitions ： the eels＇ activity rose to a primary peak after lights-off, followed by a quiescent period during which they buried into the shelters or lying motionlessly on sand for most of the time, and then reached a secondary peak before lights-on. Elvers could resynchronize their activity rhythm with a new photo cycle within 4 d. Moreover, their activity level at dark phase significantly increased as the light period was prolonged ： higher activity levels during shorter dark period. However, the elvers did not display clearly the existence of a circadian rhythm under constant light or dark conditions. The timing of daily activity rhythm evidenced in the Japanese eels may occur through the action of the LD cycles with a weak participation of an endogenous circadian system. In all the LD cycles, over 99% of the activity occurred in the dark phase, indicating that the eels were always nocturnally active no matter what time of day it might be. Under 12 L conditions, the eels＇ activity level and the time outside sand were significantly elevated both at light and dark phases as temperature increased from 10 - 15 to 20 - 25 ℃. The activity rhythm pattern （ i. e. , two peaks occurring around light transitions） did not apparently change among temperatures. However, in contrast with the primary activity peaks immediately after lights-off at 20 and 25 ℃, the timing of the primary peaks at 10 and 15 ℃ showed a latency of a few hours following lights-off, indicating the inhibiting effect of low temperature on the eels＇ activity.

*** Grain boundaries(GBs)in polycrystalline materials exhibit unique atomic structures due to the lattice disorder,resulting in properties that are distinct from the bulk[1-5].Doping foreign atoms in the GBs has become one of the most popular strategies for modifying material properties,such as grain growth behaviors,microstructures,and mechanical properties in polycrystals[6-12].These dopants typically diffuse along the GBs at elevated temper-atures and ultimately segregate to preferred GB atomic sites to modify the structures of the GBs[13-15].Consequently,GB seg-regation of dopants has gained significant interests,and a funda-mental understanding of the origin of GB segregation phenomena is crucial for the rational design of materials with unprecedented properties.

Establishment of various biliary tract carcinoma cell lines and xenograft models for appropriate preclinical studies

We recently reported several driver genes of biliary tract carcinoma(BTC) that are known to play important roles in oncogenesis and disease progression. Although the need for developing novel therapeutic strategies is increasing, there are very few BTC cell lines and xenograft models currently available for conducting preclinical studies. Using a total of 88 surgical BTC specimens and 536 immunodeficient mice, 28 xenograft models and 13 new BTC cell lines, including subtypes, were established. Some of our cell lines were found to be resistant to gemcitabine, which is currently the first choice of treatment, thereby allowing highly practical preclinical studies to be conducted. Using the aforementioned cell lines and xenograft models and a clinical pathological database of patients undergoing BTC resection, we can establish a preclinical study system and appropriate parameters for drug efficacy studies to explore new biomarkers for practical applications in the future studies.

Shell microparticles of morphology controlled and inner-modified hole from sequential inkjet-printed double emulsions

This article presents sequential inkjet-based method to produce double emulsions as templates to fabricate morphology-controlled and inner-modified hole-shell microparticles. This sequential printing strategy for producing double emulsions circumvents complex wettability modification of the microchannels in lithography-based microfluidic device and largely saves the reagent in comparison to the coaxial two-phase jet in glass capillary. The formation of hole-shell structures is attributed to the diffusion of solvent out of droplets into butanol at the interface between oil and extract phase. The change of hole size is controlled by different diffusion rate, which is determined by changing the volume ratio of butanol and alcohol in extract *** presented flexible method can fabricate some functionalized microparticles in our future work.

WDM-Pulse-position modulation technique in SI-POF transmission is proposed to overcome the limitation from mode dispersion. It can expand the flat transmission bandwidth to 80MHz with 100m-fiber length.

We performed three dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations to study the magnetic reconnection using an initially shearing magnetic field configuration（force free field with a current sheet in the middle of the computational box）.It is shown that there are two types of reconnection jets：the ordinary reconnection jets and fan-shaped jets,which are formed along the guide magnetic *** fan-shaped jets are significantly different from the ordinary reconnection jets which are ejected by magnetic tension *** are two driving forces for accelerating the fan-shaped *** is the Lorentz force which initially dominates the motion of fluid elements,and then the gas pressure gradient force accelerates the fluid elements in the later *** dependence on magnetic reconnection angle and resistivity value has also been *** formation and evolution of these jets provide a new understanding of dynamic magnetohydrodynamic jets.

Development of New Sliver Probe for Cooling Power Test of Polymer Quenchants

Working group on cooling power test of quenchants of Japanese Heat Treatment Society has studied on the new method for testing cooling power of aqueous quenchants. This method employed the cooling curve test of a new sliver rod probe, which has a metal-sheathed thermocouple at its geometrical center. The experimental study has clarified that the new silver probe has more excellent durability than the JIS silver probe employed for cooling power test of heat treating oils (JIS K 2242) and an aluminum alloy probe. Good repeatability and reproducibility of the cooling curves during polymer quenching have been confirmed. This new method is useful especially for cooling power test of aqueous quenchants used for solution heat treatment of aluminum alloys. This new silver rod probe is expected to be adopted for the revised version of JIS K 2242 as the cooling power test method for aqueous quenchants.

Optimization of Nonlinear Vibration Characteristics for Seismic Isolation Rubber

A method for reducing the damage to a structure caused by an earthquake namely,using laminated rubber for seismic isolation is proposed,and the vibration characteristics of the rubber(which minimizes the seismic response of the structure during an earthquake)is optimized.A method called“Equivalent Linear System using Restoring Force Model of Power Function Type”(PFT-ELS)is applied to nonlinear vibration analysis of the *** that analysis,a building with 15 layers of the laminated rubber is *** seismic response of the building is analyzed,and the usefulness of the laminated rubber is demonstrated by comparing the seismic responses in the cases with and without the laminated *** addition,the hysteresis restoring-force characteristic of the laminated rubber,which minimizes the seismic response of the building,was optimized by using a genetic algorithm(GA).Based on these results,the optimum restoring-force characteristic for different earthquakes was *** a result,it was clarified that the developed optimization method can determine the vibration characteristics of the laminated rubber for minimizing the damage to the structure in the design phase.

Clearance of hepatitis C virus after living-donor liver transplantation in spite of residual viremia on end date of interferon therapy before transplantation

Interferon （IFN） therapy is the only treatment strategy for hepatitis C virus （HCV） infection after liver transplantation （LT）, but prophylactic and treatable IFN therapy after LT has been shown to be insufficient due to the adverse effects of IFN and rivabirin. In this paper, we describe the disappearance of HCV after LT without IFN therapy in the presence of residual viremia on the day of LT. We herein report our findings since this is considered an important case for the anti-HCV strategy of post LT. A 60-year old woman with LC and HCC was referred to Nagasaki University Hospital in August 2004. After she underwent LT on February 18, 2005, we injected peg- IFN-α-2a the 11th time at 18 wk and HCV-RNA was still positive in the serum at LT. The serum HCV-RNA was negative one month after operation and subsequently dissolved 15 mo after operation without IFN therapy. As a result, we speculate that if HCV-RNA is positive while HCV core antigen is negative before LT, then it may lead to dearance of HCV after LT. Therefore long acting peg-IFN- α-2a is thus considered a potentially effective agent for the treatment of HCV-related cirrhosis before LT.

Ordovician diorite-quartz diorite mylonite(Saganoseki quartz diorite) was discovered in Sambagawa metamorphic terrane at the northern margin of Saganoseki Peninsula,Kyushu Island,*** LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb geochronology revealed that the intrusion age of Saganoseki quartz diorite was 473.3±3.6 *** rocks show the volcanic arc affinity based on the trace element *** the basis of geochronological and geochemical results,Saganoseki quartz diorite is considered to be a member of the Early Paleozoic igneous rocks of the Kurosegawa tectonic *** quartz diorite is located just south of the Median Tectonic Line(MTL)and is in close contact with the pelitic and psammitic schist without any brittle shear zone.U-Pb ages of detrital zircon grains from two psammitic schists show the estimated sedimentation age of early Late Cretaceous,indicate that these psammitic schists are the member of Sambagawa metamorphic *** with these results and the mode of occurrence in the field,we argue that the Early Paleozoic igneous rocks of the Kurosegawa tectonic zone existed as an upper structural unit of the Sambagawa *** relationship is the key to reconstruct the Mesozoic tectonics of Japan as a part of East Asia,and its evolution through time.
