Evaluation of the malignant potential of gliomas using diffusion-weighted and gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Objective:This study aimed to determine whether the apparent diffusion coefficients(ADCs)determined by diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI)of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)could facilitate the malignancy grading of various ***:Sixty patients with a primary cerebral glioma underwent diffusion-weighted and gadolinium-enhanced(Gd)T1-weighted MRI using a 1.5-T MRI *** was performed based on signal intensities on DWI and Gd *** mean and minimum ADC values were calculated,and Ki-67 staining was performed for each histological sample to evaluate their tumor proliferative ***,the DWI,Gd,and combined scores were analyzed and compared with the Ki-67 staining index and malignant *** relationships among the mean and minimum ADC values,Ki-67staining index,and malignant grade were also ***:The minimum ADC was inversely correlated with the Ki-67staining index,with a low minimum ADC suggestive of tumor *** qualitative evaluation of the D score of water molecule diffusion on DWI accurately reflected the pathological grades of gliomas,with an effectiveness that was at least as good as the quantitative analysis using the minimum *** diagnostic value of Gd images in determining glioma malignancy grades was inferior to that of ***:Both DWI and gadolinium-enhanced images of MRI should be considered essential for the diagnosis of tumor malignancy.

Identification of Heat Transfer Coefficients by Use Conditions of Quenching Oil

Heat transfer coefficients of the quench medium are necessary for heat-treatment simulation. Cooling characteristics of quenching oil vary with kinds and usage greatly. Users are selecting oil solutions that come up to their desired hardness and quenching distortion requirements. In particular cooling performance rises by agitation and decompression. Therefore we identified a heat transfer coefficient by usage and kinds of quenching oil. Cooling characteristics are different greatly by a kind of quenching oil. A difference of a cooling characteristic by a kind of oil depends on a temperature range of a boiling stage and the maximum heat transfer coefficient mainly. On the other hand, in a convection stage, there are few changes in a boiling stage. Even if quenching oil temperature is changed, heat transfer coefficients do not change greatly. When quenching oil stirred, heat transfer coefficients of vapor blanket stage and a convection stage rise, but there are a few changes in a boiling stage. When quenching oil is decompressed a temperature range of a high heat transfer coefficient moves to the low temperature side. In addition, a heat transfer coefficient in a vapor blanket stage comes down. For precision improvement of heat-treatment simulation, it is important that the heat transfer coefficient is calculated in conformity to the on-site use reality.

Oxidation of antimony (Ⅲ) in soil by manganese (Ⅳ) oxide using X-ray absorption fine structure

The oxidation of antimony （Ⅲ） in soils was studied using X-ray absorption fine structure （XAFS） spectra. An andosol soft sample and artificial soil samples （SiO2 blended with iron （Ⅲ） hydroxide and manganese （Ⅳ） oxide） were used herein. After adding antimony （Ⅲ） oxide to all soil samples, the oxidation process was observed by recording the XAFS spectra of Sb K-edge, Fe Kedge, and Mn K-edge. The results indicated that manganese （Ⅳ） oxide played an important role in the oxidation of Sb（Ⅲ）; however iron （Ⅲ） hydroxide was not directly related to the reaction. During a 2-hr continuous Sb K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure （XANES） measurement with an interval of I rain of one of the artificial soil samples （SiO2 ＋ MnO2 ＋ Sb2O3）, a pseudo-first-order reaction was determined with an average estimated rate of 0.52 ±0.04 hr-1. Compared to the lower oxidation rate of andosol, it is suggested that because of the low concentration of Mn（Ⅳ） in natural soils, the oxidation process of Sb（Ⅲ） might be relatively slow and require more time to convert Sb（Ⅲ） to Sb（V）.

Wavefront control of subcycle vortex pulses via carrier-envelope-phase tailoring

The carrier-envelope phase(CEP)of an ultrashort laser pulse is becoming more crucial to specify the temporal characteristic of the pulse's electric field when the pulse duration becomes shorter and attains the subcycle regime;here,the pulse duration of the intensity envelope is shorter than one cycle period of the carrier field *** this subcycle pulse involves a structured wavefront as is contained in an optical vortex(OV)pulse,the CEP has an impact on not only the temporal but also the spatial characteristics owing to the spatiotemporal coupling in the structured optical ***,the direct observation of the spatial effect of the CEP control has not yet been *** this study,we report on the measurement and control of the spatial wavefront of a subcycle OV pulse by adjusting the *** generate subcycle OV pulses,an optical parametric amplifier delivering subcycle Gaussian pulses and a Sagnac interferometer as a mode converter were integrated and provided an adequate spectral *** pulse duration of the generated OV pulse was 4.7 fs at a carrier wavelength of 1.54μ*** confirm the wavefront control with the alteration of the CEP,we developed a novel f-2f interferometer that exhibited spiral fringes originating from the spatial interference between the subcycle OV pulse and the second harmonic of the subcycle Gaussian pulse producing a parabolic wavefront as a reference;this resulted in the successful observation of the rotation of spiral interference fringes during CEP manipulation.

Determination of ammonium on an integrated microchip with LED-induced fluorescence detection

A simply fabricated microfluidic device integrated with a fluorescence detection system has been developed for on-line determination of ammonium in aqueous samples. A 365-nm light-emitting diode （LED） as an excitation source and a minor band pass filter were mounted into a polydimethylsiloxane （PDMS）-based microchip for the purpose of miniaturization of the entire analytical system. The ammonium sample reacted with o-phthaldialdehyde （OPA） on-chip with sodium sulfite as reducing reagent to produce a fluorescent isoindole derivative, which can emit fluorescence signal at about 425 nm when excited at 365 nm. Effects of pH, flow rate of solutions, concentrations of OPA-reagent, phosphate and sulfite salt were investigated. The calibration curve of ammonium in the range of 0.018- 1.8 μg/mL showed a good linear relationship with R2 = 0.9985, and the detection limit was （S /N = 3） 3.6 × 10 4 μg/mL. The relative standard deviation was 2.8% （n = 11） by calculating at 0.18 μg/mL ammonium for repeated detection. The system was applied to determine the ammonium concentration in rain and river waters, even extent to other analytes fluorescence detection by the presented device.

An EPR Study on Intramolecular Spin Exchange and Rotational Mobility of Nitroxides Linked by a Long-chain

The effects of pressure and solvent on the intramolecular spin exchange of biradicals having two nitroxide fragments linked by a long flexible chain were studied by means of highpressure EPR *** was found that the intramolecular exchange interaction between nitroxides of biradical took place through the direct contact between *** analyzing the observed EPR spectra,we have estimated the ratio(in/out)value of the average lifetime of the radical fragments inside a cage(in)to that outside the cage(out).The in/out values decreased with decreasing temperature and increasing *** results suggest that the nearly cyclic conformation in a cage is favorable in ***,the rotational correlation time of individual nitroxide was estimated from the anisotropic EPR signal,and the information on the segmental motion of the nitroxide group in biradical was obtained.

Gastric adenocarcinoma inducing portal hypertension:A rare presentation

Advanced gastric cancer usually presents with symptoms due to direct extension into adjacent viscera, distant metastases from lymphatic or hematogenic dissemination and peritoneal seeding. However, portal hypertension as a presentation of metastatic gastric cancer is rare and usually seen in association with other malignancies, e.g. hepatocellular and pancreatic carcinoma. We report a case of signet ring adenocarcinoma of the stomach that presented with esophageal and duodenal varices and bleeding due to portal hypertensive gastropathy. Pagetoid spread of cancer cells likely caused early metastasis and the unusual presentation. We also discussed the pathophysiology of development of portal hypertension in association with malignancies.

Structures of membrane protein in solution are different from that in crystal phase. We present the primary results of small angle x-ray scattering （SAXS） resolved topological structures of a light harvesting antenna membrane protein complex LH2 from photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas acidophila in detergent solution for the first time. Our results show that the elliptical shape of the LH2 complex in solution clearly deviates from its circular structure in crystal phase determined by x-ray diffraction. This result provides an insight into the structure and function interplay in LH2.

A support tool incorporating a district disaster mitigation performance evaluation method for the examination of improvement plans in built-up areas

Approximately 20,000 ha of densely built-up areas still remain in Japan. However, the advance of improvements in these areas has been very slow. Thus, making draft improvement plans through citizen-administration partnerships is indispensable to promote improvements. The planning support tool proposed in this study supports a consensus-building process during the creation of draft improvement plans. We develop a disaster mitigation performance evaluation method （DMPEM） for built-up areas at the district level and incorporate this method into a disaster mitigation support Web-GIS. However, DMPEM requires lengthy calculation time because it uses the probabilistic Monte Carlo computation method. Using this tool in realime planning is therefore difficult. In this study, we first develop a system that reduces the calculation time required by DMPEM. Second, the support tool is used to make draft plans through citizen-administration partnerships in districts where residents are conducting various disaster mitigation activities. Finally, we investigate the usefulness of the tool for consensus building through the promotion of lively discussions among residents and clarify the issues associated with practical use of the tool.

Effect of Nonequilibrium condensation of Moist Air on Transonic Flow Fields

When condensation occurs in a supersonic flow field, the flow is affected by the latent heat released. In the present study, a condensing flow was produced by an expansion of moist air in nozzle with circular bump models and shock waves occurred in the supersonic parts of the flow fields. The experimental investigations were carried out to show the effects of initial conditions in the reservoir and nozzle geometries on the shock wave characteristics and the turbulences in the flow fields. Furthermore, in order to clarify the effect of condensation on the flow fields with shock waves, Navier-Stokes equations were solved numerically using a 3rd-order MUSCL type TVD finitedifference scheme with a second order fractional step for time integration. As a result the effect of condensation on the aspect of flow field has been clarified.
