Effect of ambient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nicotine on the structure of Aβ_(42) protein

Recent studies have correlated the chronic impact of ambient environmental pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)with the progression of neurodegenerative disorders,either by using statistical data from various cities,or via tracking biomarkers during in-vivo *** different neurodegenerative disorders,PAHs are known to cause increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease,related to the development of amyloid beta(Aβ)peptide ***,the complex molecular interactions between peptide monomers and organic pollutants remains *** this work,we performed an atomistic molecular dynamics study via GROMACS to investigate the structure of Aβ_(42) peptide monomer in the presence of benzo[a]pyrene,nicotine,and *** the results revealed strong hydrophobic,and hydrogen-bond based interactions between Aβpeptides and these environmental pollutants that resulted in the formation of stable intermolecular *** strong interactions affected the secondary structure of the Aβ_(42) peptide in the presence of the organic pollutants,with almost 50%decrease in theα-helix and 2%–10%increase in theβ-sheets of the ***,the undergoing changes in the secondary structure of the peptide monomer in the presence of the pollutants under the study indicates an enhanced formation of Aβpeptide oligomers,and consequent progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Stem cells derived from adult tissues have long been consideredmultipotent, able to differentiate into a limited number of cell typesfound in their tissue of origin. Embryonic stem cells, in contrast,are pluripotent, which may differentiate into almost all cell *** the ability to create induced pluripotent stem cells from somaticcells now available, the properties of multipotent stem cellsare being re-evaluated. If adult cells may be reverted to pluripotentstem cells, can multipotent stem cells also be manipulated towardspluripotency? Advancements in biotechnology now allow for bettermethods to investigate stem cell plasticity, such as the relativeinfluence of external versus intrinsic factors on cell fate. Recentstudies indicate that adult neural stem cells (NSCs) demonstrategreater plasticity under certain conditions, resulting in the derivationof a variety of cell types including muscle, hematopoietic, andepithelial cells. This suggests that NSCs may provide a potentialsource of rare cell types for clinical application as an alternative toembryonic stem cells. Producing rare cell types from NSCs ratherthan embryonic stem cells avoids the ethical issues surrounding theuse of this cell type. Further, NSCs may be an advantageous sourcecompared to induced pluripotent stem cells, which are difficult tocreate, expensive, and time-consuming to

Hemodynamic and morphologic changes of peripheral hepatic vasculature in cirrhotic liver disease: A preliminary study using contrast-enhanced coded phase inversion harmonic ultrasonography

AIM: To provide the useful information for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis by observing the morphology of peripheral hepatic vessels and the hemodynamics of microbubble arrival time in these ***: Twenty-one subjects including 5 normal volunteers and 16 patients (liver cirrhosis, n=10;chronic hepatitis, n=6) were studied by contrast-enhanced coded phase inversion harmonic sonography (GE LOGIQ9 series) using a 6-8 MHz convex-arrayed wide-band transducer. The images of peripheral hepatic artery,portal and hepatic vein were observed in real-time for about 2 min after intravenous injection of Levovist. The time when microbubbles appeared in the peripheral vessels (microbubble arrival time) was also recorded. The morphologic changes of peripheral hepatic vasculature were classified as marked, slight, and no changes based on the regularity in caliber, course, ramification, and the delineation of vessels compared to normal ***: The microbubble arrival time at peripheral artery, portal, and hepatic vein was shorter in cirrhotic patients than in chronic hepatitis patients and normal subjects. The marked, slight and no morphologic changes of peripheral hepatic vasculature found in 5 (5/6,83.3%), 1 (1/6, 16.7% ), and 0 (0/6, 0%) liver cirrhosis patients, respectively, and in 1 (1/10, 10%), 6 (6/10,60%), and 3 (3/10, 30%) chronic hepatitis patients,respectively. There was a significant difference between the two groups (P＜0.001).CONCLUSION: Evaluation of the hemodynamics and morphology of peripheral hepatic vasculature by contrast-enhanced coded pulse inversion harmonic sonography can provide useful information for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis.

Identification of sources of lead in the atmosphere by chemical speciation using X-ray absorption near-edge structure(XANES) spectroscopy

Sources of Pb pollution in the local atmosphere together with Pb species, major ions, and heavy metal concentrations in a size-fractionated aerosol sample from Higashi-Hiroshima （Japan） have been determined by X-ray absorption near-edge structure （XANES） spectroscopy, ion chromatography, and ICP-MS/AES, respectively. About 80% of total Pb was concentrated in fine aerosol particles. Lead species in the coarse aerosol particles were PbC204, 2PbCO3-Pb（OH）2, and Pb（NO3）2, whereas Pb species in the fine aerosol particles were PbC204, PbSO4, and Pb（NO3）2. Chemical speciation and abundance data suggested that the source of Pb in the fine aerosol particles was different from that of the coarse ones. The dominant sources of Pb in the fine aerosol particles were judged to be fly ash from a municipal solid waste incinerator and heavy oil combustion. For the coarse aerosol particles, road dust was considered to be the main Pb source. In addition to Pb species, elemental concentrations in the aerosols were also determined. The results suggested that Pb species in size-fractionated aerosols can be used to identify the origin of aerosol particles in the atmosphere as an alternative to Pb isotope ratio measurement.

Determination of symptoms associated with hiesho among young females using hie rating surveys

Objective： Hie （cold sensation） is one of the most well-known health complaints in Japan and elsewhere in East Asia. Those who suffer from severe hie are considered to have hiesho （cold disorder）. This study was conducted to determine symptoms associated with hie in young females using a survey consisting of the hie scale and hie diary. Methods： Two hundred and seventy-one participants were included for the analysis. Survey forms were distributed to the participants. Diagnosis of hiesho was determined by using the hie scale. A discriminant score of over -0.38 was considered hiesho. The Short Form-8 Health Survey Standard Version （SF-8） was used to measure health-related quality of life （QOL）. The participants were also asked to respond to the questionnaire evaluating 14 physical and emotional symptoms, utilizing a six-level Likert scale item. Results： The 1st factor （hie factor） was correlated with hie （r= 0.546）, dry mouth （r= 0.332）, lower- extremity edema （r = 0.450）, headrushes （r=0.470）, shoulder stiffness （r = 0.311 ）, headrushes with chills （r = 0.726）, and fatigue （r= 0.359）. Cronbach＇s α of the 1st factor was 0.748, which indicated reliability between the items. When hie factor was the dependent variable, standardized partial regression coefficient was β=-0.387 for physical component score （P 〈 0.001） and β=-0.243 for mental component score （P 〈 0.001 ）. Conclusion： This study indicated that hiesho symptoms among young female adults were associated with bodily pain and general health perceptions of the SF-8 QOL survey.

Combustion synthesis of YAG:Ce phosphors via the thermite reaction of aluminum

Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet（YAG：Ce） as a yellow phosphor for white light-emitting diodes（LEDs） was synthesized via a facile combustion method using Y2 O3, CeO2, Al2 O3, Al,and NaClO4 as raw materials. The combustion synthesis approach utilizes the strong exothermic oxidation of aluminum to realize a self-sustaining reaction. In this study, we investigated the effects of the ratios of Al2 O3 to AI,fluxes, and coprecipitated materials as raw materials on the luminescence properties of the synthesized YAG：Ce phosphors. When the amount of Al2 O3 x is varied, the combustion reaction proceeds at x ≤ 1.8,with x = 1.725 being the optimum condition for producing a high-performance product. When 5 wt%BaF2 is added, the luminescence intensity is significantly improved owing to a decrease of YAP（YAlO3）formation with improved uniformity. However, the addition of CaF2 and NaF does not improve the luminescence properties. To suppress the segregation of CeO2, we used the coprecipitated material Y2 O3-CeO2 as a raw material. Unlike with separate addition of Y2 O3 and CeO2, Ce ions are uniformly distributed in the coprecipitated material, resulting in improved luminescence properties. The combination of BaF2 and coprecipitated material significantly improves the internal quantum efficiency to83.0%, which is close to that of commercial phosphors.

A turbidity current is a particle-laden current driven by density differences due to suspended sediment *** currents can transport large amounts of sediment down slopes over great distances,and play a significant role in fluvial,lake and submarine *** better understand the sediment transport process,the flow system of an experimentally produced turbidity current in an inclined flume was investigated using video *** observed that the current progresses with constant frontal velocity and maintains an unchanged global interface *** addition,the spatio-temporal profiles of the inner mean and turbulence velocity obtained by ultrasound velocity profiler(UVP) showed that similar distributions were maintained,with low *** results indicate that the turbidity current progressed in a quasi-stationary state,which enabled long-distance sediment *** understand the mechanisms behind the quasi-stationary flow,we analyzed the forces acting on the turbidity *** found that under particular densities of suspended particles,the gravitational force is balanced by the viscous forces along the slope *** conclude that this specific force balance induces the quasi-stationary flow structure,enabling the long-distance transport of a substantial amount of sediment downstream with low dissipation.

Spatio-temporal deposition profile of an experimentally produced turbidity current with a continuous suspension supply

A turbidity current is a turbulent, particle-laden gravity current that is driven by density differences resulting from the presence of suspended sediment particles. The current travels downslope, bearing a large amount of sediment over a great distance, and forms fluvial and submarine bedforms. Knowledge of the spatio-temporal deposition profile of turbidity-deposited sediment is important for a better understanding of sediment transport by turbidity currents. In the current study, the depositional process of experimentally produced quasi-steady turbidity currents in an inclined flume was investigated using an electrical-resistance-based depositmeter. It was found that the amount of sediment deposited along the flume bottom increases linearly with time at a specific rate, and decreases exponentially in the downstream direction. Inspired by this observation, the mass conservation law was modified for the suspension layer and a simple theoretical model was proposed involving two parameters, the initial sedimentation rate and the decay constant. The proposed model reproduces the observed data from the flume experiment with high accuracy, and is consistent with the sediment transport distance of a natural example, the Bengal Fan. It was concluded that the two parameters that govern the sedimentation process are the key to estimating the deposition profile of fluvial systems.

Memory consolidation during sleep and adult hippocampal neurogenesis

In anticipation of the massive burden of neurodegenerative disease within super-aged societies, great efforts have been made to utilize neural stem and progenitor cells for regenerative medicine. The capacity of intrinsic neural stem and progenitor cells to regenerate damaged brain tissue remains unclear, due in part to the lack of knowledge about how these newly born neurons integrate into functional circuitry. As sizable integration of adult-born neurons naturally occurs in the dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus, clarifying the mechanisms of this process could provide insights for applying neural stem and progenitor cells in clinical settings. There is convincing evidence of functional correlations between adult-born neurons and memory consolidation and sleep; therefore, we describe some new advances that were left untouched in our recent review.

Deep recycling of volatile elements in the mantle:Evidence from the heterogeneous B isotope in intra-plate basalts

Volatiles in the mantle are crucial for Earth’s geodynamic and geochemical *** the deep recycling of volatiles is key for grasping mantle chemical heterogeneity,plate tectonics,and long-term planetary *** subduction transfers abundant volatile elements from the Earth’s surface into the mantle,the fate of hydrous portions within subducted slabs during intensive dehydration processes remains *** isotopes,only efficiently fractionating near the Earth’s surface,are valuable for tracing volatile recycling *** this study,we document a notably large variation inδ^(11)B values(−14.3‰to+8.2‰)in Cenozoic basalts from the South China *** basalts,associated with a high-velocity zone beneath East China,are suggested to originate from the mantle transition *** the majority exhibitδ^(11)B values(−10‰to−5‰)resembling the normal mantle,their enriched Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions and fluid-mobile elements imply hydrous components in their source,including altered oceanic crust and *** normalδ^(11)B values are attributed to the dehydration *** highδ^(11)B values in the basalts indicate the presence of subducted serpentinites in their mantle source.A small subset of samples with lowδ^(11)B values and radiogenic isotope enrichments suggests a contribution from recycled detrital sediments,though retaining minimal volatile elements after extensive *** findings provide compelling evidence that serpentinites within subducted slabs predominantly maintain their hydrous nature during dehydration processes in subduction *** may transport a considerable amount of water into deep mantle reservoirs,such as the mantle transition zone.
