The microcolonial black fungus Cryomyces antarcticus is an extremophile organism growing on and in rock in the Antarctic desert. Ecological plasticity and stress tolerance make it a perfect model organism for astrobiology. 2D-gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry were performed to explore the protein repertoire, which allows the fungus to survive in the harsh environment. Only a limited number of proteins could be identified by using sequence homologies in public databases. Due to the rather low identification rate by sequence homology, this study reveals that a major part of the proteome of C. antarcticus varies significantly from other fungal species.

Mating decisions can be affected by intrasexual competition and sensitive to operational sex-ratio （OSR） changes in the population. Conceptually, it is assumed that both male and female matecompetition may interfere with female reproductive decisions. Experimentally, however, the focus has been on the effect of male competition on mate choice. In many species with paternal care as in the common goby Pomatoschistus microps, the OSR is often female-biased and female matecompetition for access to available nesting males occurs. Using the same protocol for 3 experi- ments testing the effect of a perceived risk of female mate-competition, I studied female preferences for nest-holding males differing in its nest size （large/small）, body size （large/small）, and nest status （with/without eggs already in nest） and measured mating decisions, spawning latencies, and clutch size. Regardless of the social context, females preferred males with larger nests. A preference for large males was only expressed in presence of additional females. For nest status, there was a tendency for females to prefer mating with males with an empty nest. Here, female-female competition increased the propensity to mate. The results of this study show that females are sensitive to a female competitive social environment and suggest that in choice situations, females respond to the social context mainly by mating decisions per se rather than by adjusting the clutch size or spawning latency. Females base their mating decisions not only on a male＇s nest size but also on male size as an additional cue of mate quality in the presence of additional females.

Residence time distributions （RTDs） in horizontal fluidised beds have a huge effect on solid product properties and are infuenced by the internal design of the apparatus, e.g. the separation into different compartments by weirs. Weirs can be passed in or against the overall solid transport direction, with the back-flow resulting in axial dispersion, which is a measure of the spread of the RTD. Therefore, the ratio of exchange rates at weirs under different fluidisation conditions provides information on axial dispersion. In this work, a methodology based on particle tracking velocimetry is presented to obtain information on the exchange rates of particles at weirs in horizontal fluidised beds. The internal recirculation is studied for over-flow weirs with respect to different fluidisation conditions, providing a first step towards determining the effects of weirs and fluidisation conditions on axial dispersion and RTDs in horizontal fluidised beds.

Disruption of normal fetal development can influence functioning of organs and cells in adulthood. Circumstantial evidence suggests that subtle reductions in fetal androgen production may be the cause of adult male reproductive disorders due to reduced testosterone production. The mechanisms through which these fetal events affect adult testosterone levels are l^rgely unknown. A recent paper of Kilcoyne et al. provides evidence that fetal reduction in androgen production or signaling results in a reduced Leydig stems cell number after birth and concomitant Leydig cell failure in adulthood. This implies that fetal androgen deficiency can lead to negative programming of adult Leydig cell （ALC） function, which may have implications for general health, aging, and longevity.

Although it has become clear that sexual selection may shape mating systems and drive speciation, the potential constraints of environmental factors on processes and outcomes of sexual selection are largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the geographic variation of such environmental factors, more precisely the quality and quantity of nest resources （bivalve shells） along a salinity gradient in the Baltic Sea Area （Baltic Sea, Sounds and Belts, and Kattegat）. We further test whether we find any salinity-associated morphological differences in body size between populations of common gobies Pomatoschistus microps, a small marine fish with a resource-based mat- ing system. In a geographically expansive field study, we sampled 5 populations of P. microps occurring along the salinity gradient （decreasing from West to East） in the Baltic Sea Area over 3 consecutive years. Nest resource quantity and quality decreased from West to East, and a correla- tion between mussel size and male body size was detected. Population density, sex ratios, mating- and reproductive success as well as brood characteristics also differed between populations but with a less clear relation to salinity. With this field study we shed light on geographic variation of distinct environmental parameters possibly acting on population differentiation. We provide insights on relevant ecological variation, and draw attention to its importance in the framework of context-dependent plasticity of sexual selection.

The Holtemme is a small headwater stream in North Germany＇s Elbe River Basin. According to German and European legislation, hygienic monitoring is not mandatory for such water bodies which are neither drinking water sources nor categorized as bathing waters. Consequently, relatively little is known about the occur- rence of-potentially pathogenic- bacteria and viruses in Germany＇s streams and rivers. The Holtemme was selected for a case study because it is relatively well monitored for both chemical water quality and aquatic ecology, but not for hygiene. Originating in the mountains of Harz Nature Park, the 47 km long Holtemme is characterized by a strong longitudinal gradient in chemical water quality, which is related to different land uses and the influx of treated wastewater from two urban areas （Wernigerode and Halberstadt）. Waste water loads received by the Holtemme are comparatively high when compared to similarly small streams. In 2015, total coliform concentrations between more than 200 and 77,010 bacteria per 100 mL, and fecal coliform concentrations between 5 and 24,060 bacteria per I00 mL were observed in the Holtemme＇s main channel. The highest concentrations were typically found below the outlets of the two wastewater treatment plants. The treated wastewater contained total and fecal coliform concentra- tions of up to 200,500 and 83,100 per 100 mL, respectively; however, there were significant temporal variations. While the observed concentrations are unpro- blematic from a legal perspective （because no maximum permissible limits are defined for streams in Germany）, they would exceed the tolerable limits for bathing waters in the EU, indicating moderate to critical pollution limits.

Having pre-existing comorbidities is described as a risk factor for more severe disease in adult corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19)and in infections with SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV[1].In adult SARS-CoV-2 infections,patients with pre-existing underlying comorbidities,such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,cardiovascular disease,diabetes and obesity,are more likely to have severe disease compared to healthy adults[2].An inconsistency is seen in current fndings on the association with comorbidities and pediatric COVID-19 *** important limitation in currently available studies is limited data:severe disease is rare in children compared to adults,and most studies describe COVID-19 severity merely by reporting intensive care unit(ICU)admission or mortality rates instead of detailed data on clinical presentation and outcomes.
